[NFP] Religious Victory Elimination Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
My personal thought is that factoring in strength in religious combat is totally legitimate and consistent with the "spirit" of the thread. Thus, I wouldn't have a problem upvoting Genghis or even Catherine because they do get an advantage in this regard.

On the other hand, I wouldn't choose to upvote Alexander because he would have an easy time conquering everyone down to one or two cities and spreading his religion to them to end the game.

Just to clarify, I think we're all in agreement over the Genghis point: he gets CS boosts to his apostles, therefore he is good at religion. What people were disagreeing on is whether domination Civs who have absolutely no bonuses to religion – e.g. the three already eliminated, Shaka, Alexander, and Suleiman – can be considered 'good' here purely on the basis that conquering other civs is, technically, one route to a religious victory. The very fact that those three have been eliminated suggests that the argument is settled.

Amanitore/Nubia [16]
Catherine/France [15]
Chandragupta/India [16] (15+1) Definitely not as good as Gandhi, but he gets an upvote nonetheless. The +2 missionary charges are so powerful in the early game. There's a crucial window in the classical/medieval era – just after you build your first shrines, but before the AI manage to initiate their apostle spam – during which missionaries are the main vector for religious play. With +2 charges, you can easily wipe out your neighbour's religion with only one or two missionaries, especially if you also get an 'Exodist' golden age.
Cleopatra/Egypt [16]
Cyrus/Persia [12]
Dido/Phoenicia [10]
Eleanor/France [9]
Eleanor/England [6] (9-3) Engleanor has a lot of districts she needs to build: royal navy dockyards for naval game, theatre squares for the great works, industrial zones for 'Workshop of the World', campuses for general competence, and maybe an entertainment complex or two for 'Bread & Circuses'. I can't see how holy sites can also fit into the equation. At least Freleanor could utilise her +20% wonder bonus to grab some religious wonders (e.g. Mont St. Michel, Hagia Sophia, Kotoku-in, Meenakshi Temple): Engleanor has no incentive whatsoever.

Mansa Musa/Mali [18] it's not worth a downvote (yet) because Mansa Musa is still very good at religion overall. But we need to remember how significant his early production malus is. In a recent deity attempt as Mali, I restarted the game because I missed out on a religion. I didn't do anything wrong, it's simply that my production was so bad that I didn't have time to get more than one holy site down before the prophets were all gone. In the next game, I had a similar situation and only narrowly grabbed the last religion by faith purchasing the prophet, which was not an ideal use of my early faith. TL;DR: Mansa is great if you manage to get a religion, but he suffers more than anyone else in the race to get there.

Eleanor/England [3] (6-3) I'm starting to think Vicky and Engleanor should have been eliminated first. As if we needed another reason to cull them, mountains tend to be found inland – so England's coastal spawn leaves them with no good spots for holy sites. (I've often found it strange that holy sites gain no bonuses from coast. Like, there are dozens of famous temple spots in the Mediterranean built right next to the coast, and plenty of cultures have found it instinctive to put their monuments to the gods in beautiful places with commanding views of the sea. So why does Civ pretend that the only place for temples is in mountains?)

Montezuma/Aztec [16] (15+1) I actually think it's Monty, not Genghis, who is the more impressive domination-turned-religious leader. Not only does he get a sizeable CS boost to his apostles. He can also rush his holy sites with builder charges (especially useful in combo with Eagle Warriors) meaning that, unlike Genghis, he is at little risk of missing out on a prophet.

Gitarja/Indonesia [18] (17+1) Just playing a religion game with her now, so it makes sense she gets an upvote at this point. She has several benefits altough maybe not being top 5, but that's matter to discuss latter. Just for now, getting a religion with her is maybe the thing most difficult, but after that faith generation just comes by, as your coast cities start generating faith (nice to snatch a good pantheon), and then, you can always use coast adjacency if no good mountain spots are found (or to complement them). Granted I took pilgrimage, but if in my current game I'm swimming in faith and producing more apostles than usual, it's because of her ability (not to say the option to quick embark-disembark apostles comes quite handy to pick your fights). Probably much worse in pangea... but seriously, if you are taking Gitarja, you are already looking for an archipielago/island plates/fractal, or at least continents map.

Philip/Spain [16] (15+1) Since there has been this debate about domination and religion going on, I'm surprised Philip hasn't gotten a single vote yet since he is designed to be a mix of both domination and religion and played as such (so it remains in the spirit of this religious thread). Dominate all your neighbors (instant conversion upon city capture) and spread your religion from there. Missions provide decent mid-game faith and El Escorial adds +4 to combat, including apostles CS. The most "violent" religious games I had were with him and Poland. He is the latest of late bloomers unfortunately though which hurts his overall game.

John Curtin/Australia [16] (15+1) As always, Curtin gets an upvote for being good at everything. Not only does Land Down Under boost adjacency of his holy sites (giving you at least +1 and in many cases +3), but it also does the same thing for theater squares (to help get you to important civics) and campuses (which get added appeal from your holy site/theater square/campus triangles, allowing you to fly through the tech tree). Australia players typically don't focus on religion, but the path is there if you want to.

Qin Shi Huang/China [10] (13-3) Qin has an awesome ability that allows him to rush early wonders, some of which are among the best in the game. Do you really want to avoid taking advantage of that in order to put down a holy site and run prayers? Sure, he can theoretically rush Stonehenge, but only if he has a place to build it...

Jayavarman/Khmer [16] 15+1 The case for Jayavarman is limited, but as we are still sorting the wheat from the chaff, I'll give him an upvote. I think it is widely recognised that his abilities do not gel together as well as they might. The Prasat gives an incentive to go for religion, and there can be some gains to be had from the relics, but this is rarely game-changing. Probably the best that can be said for him is that the additional housing and food from Holy Sites usually offsets the disadvantages of placing them in most cities. You rarely have to choose between HS and other districts because population growth will take care of the problem.

Qin Shi Huang/China [11] (10+1) Lots of people downvoted him but I don't think he has to go this soon. Being able to rush wonders allows you to rush Stonehenge and securing an early prophet while building your Holy Site. The +10% for Inspirations is quite meager but can be enough to catch Mysticism and Theology quicker. And finally if you manage to have Divine Inspiration you'll swim in Faith for buying missionaries and apostales. So, yeah, lots of conditions, but still better than Matthias Corvinus that only have the talent of building a Holy Site quicker (but sacrificing maybe adjacency bonuses) and keeping religious city-States soverignty more easily.

Jayavarman/Khmer [17] (16+1) Their religious and cultural paths are so closely intertwined, you can pursue both simultaneously. Take Reliquaries and you will get 12 faith per relic. A full prasat is 24. Send your missionaries off to convert like normal. As you convert cities, if some of them start dying, that's fine because now you're building up a faith snowball. I just completed a Khmer RV two days ago and I had 700/faith a turn at the very end. You can just drown the enemy with waves of missionaries and apostles.

Kristina/Sweden [9] (12-3) I've not actually played religious victory as many of these remaining leaders (I mean, let's be honest, you usually only attempt RV as a religious Civ, right?). So I'm going purely on academic arguments: what in their playset do I imagine lends itself well to religious play? And with Kristina, I can't see anything that would help with religion. Her early game culture isn't even that great, unless you go for super-niche Apadana / Great Library theming strategies (but if you're doing that, are you also able to devote the hammers to getting a religion ....?). So yeah: nothing to see here, may as well eliminate her posthaste.

Pachacuti/Inca [14] While it may be true that 'none of their bonuses have anything to do with religion', this is the case for almost all of the Civs remaining. What Pachacuti does have, however, is a tier 3 start bias for mountains, which gives great adjacency opportunities for Holy Sites.

Peter/Russia [25] (24+1) With the recent buffs to Work Ethic, I began and completed a standard size, deity, continents RV game as Peter yesterday, just to see how fast I could do it. 117 turns is the answer. He really is light years ahead of the rest.

Kristina/Sweden [6] (9-3) I had also earmarked her for a downvote. A very specific strategy is to found a religion, pick reliquaries, grab Apadana & Mount Saint Michel & St. Basil's, and receive a huge amount of faith by theming your relics (something like 100 faith/turn from only four relics). I tried this strategy, on emperor no less, and it did not go well. With no bonuses to founding a religion, I immediately fell behind in the hunt to get one. I lost Apadana and had to use all my chops to get MSMichel & Basil's. And I still wasn't earning enough faith to purchase the apostles I needed to get the relics in the first place. This strategy is probably great fun if you pull it off, but it's not enough to make Kristina good at religious victory.

Kristina/Sweden [3] (6-3) Culture and diplomacy. Her abilities are designed around those two victory types and there is no real boost to faith or religion in general. Relics I guess but the previous poster's argument was pretty solid.

Catherine/France [12] (15-3) I don’t know if she’s the worst on the list, but she’s not great. The wonder building buff comes too late, since most would have already have founded and enhanced religions by the time this comes online. Chateaus come after theology. And spies do not interact with holy sites.

Tamar/Georgia [20] (19+1) My first RV was with Tamar. The Tsihke is not so bad to build now, and provides more faith than some T3 religious buildings (on top of holy site buildings). The protectorate war buff is also strong when leveraged. 100% faith yields can be a lot.

Kristina/Sweden [0] (3-3 ELIMINATED) Everything has been said, Kristina is one of the worst. Even if you consider it a Culture player, she has no bonus to actually gain culture and thus grabbing theology or mysticism; moreover, she's also encouraged to go writing rather than astrology to build campuses, and civic-wise, while Drama and Poetry guides you to Theology (and with Kristina you want TS the earliest possible), she would skip Mysticism, and Mysticism gives a lot of perks for religion. She has no bonus to gain more GA, GW and GMu, only Great Scientists and Engineers. She has bonus when she gain Great People, but not to gain some. For me, she is very similar in a sense to Robert Bruce, and for that she has to go.

Pachacuti/Inca [15] (14+1) While not having bonuses to religion per se, Incans can use their bonuses to anything they want, including religion. Having a strong bias towards mountains, they can have very good adjacencies; they have lots of bonuses towards production, allowing you to rush your holy sites; and they tend to have pretty big cities which will have lots of followers, and thus converting them would be difficult and their religious pressure would be even more greater. Very great religion defense and good ability to start a religion so it deserves to be at least in the upper second tier/bottom first tier of this list.
