There are so many negative rep hits, I'd like to see a positive rep influence when I kill a mutual enemy while its in an ally's territory. As it stands, it seems that if I actively defend my ally, he/she will evenually hate me after the war because the defeated civ's negativity towards me will be passed on to the other civs.

I kept one ally gracious towards me for at least 200 hundred turns and one turn after it dropped to polite, i gave it 500g. Altho it didnt go back to gracious, i still felt safe from my good friend, but one turn later it joined an ai that had attacked me unprovoked. Its kinda frustrating the you can start no wars, raze no cities, give plenty of gifts, renew ROPs time after time, make plenty of trades, yet late in the game, I'm still hated by everyone. I've decided to turn off the UN victory and from now on will pillage and backstab like the AIs do.

Actually, he will hate you because you broke your military alliance with him when you destoryed the other civ.

I hate this as well. The AI has a long memory for your little slights towards him but can't remember any of your friendly actions.

This has always been a sore spot with me. I also do not think the AI's have any idea of the long term values and dangers of diplomatic negotiations. For example, I was in this one game were I was exceedingly nice to one civ (can't recall who - but lets call them India). Traded teachs and resources to the at below market value. We had a good dialouge going. Also, let me point out that I was in the top of the standings while he had 3-4 cities, nesselted around my empire, with the ocean to his back. We are in the late industrial times and I am sending him horses and saltpeter. I am currently at war with another civ (lets call them Babylonia because it was probably them) and suddenly, India and Babylonia sign a MA against me  Ghandi has to know that he has no chance against me, so why make the deal. He has not only ruined our relationship but hurt his economy since I was buying his extra wince and sending him his much needed war material. In four turns, he was History.

You don't have to overdo your gifts. The AI attitude towards you improves by 1 point for every 10 gold worth of gifts you give him. There's also a max 10 point improvement cap for the _entire_ game so after you have donated him 100 gold worth of gifts further gifts won't do anything.

Check Bamspeedy's article "AI Attitude Exposed" in the War Academy:

I thought Bamspeedy had revised his gold theory that extra gold didnt increase the AIs love for you, but did increase the amount of time that passed before the AI forgot that you had given it gold. As soon as I saw Cleo drop to polite, I knew that something was affecting me negatively and wanted to make sure that she "remembered" my previous gifts.
