one thing comes to mind, hope that doesn't result in a day 1 jester win -- is it normal for jesters to get thrown into the mix with no warning? and do they always survive once or was that a special approach in the game that just finished?

Depends on the Jester. Sometimes they have to get lynched once, sometimes they have to get lynched multiple times.

Sometimes, as in the Star Wars Mafia game Zack and I hosted a few months ago, they actually are Jar-Jar Binks.

And you're going to be "quite sure who's mafia" next day? When is not wanting to kill a town "by lynching" (so it's okay for you to do it at night?) going to wear off? By that logic, you will be abstaining every single day phase.

Yes, but during night, more private action takes place, in opposition to public, and voting patterns become more evident over many phases.
