Is there a maximum to the number of resources that can be added to a scenario? I'd like to add place names to the resource list so that I can label oceans, islands and such.

I checked in the "da rules explained" thread but didn't see anything about maximums.

Thanks for any help. :)

It's 1000 IIRC, so you can have a lot of labels, but only 32 strategic/luxury resources, unless you want to deal with a bug that creates shadow resources in cities.

yes...many Bonus Resources can be added for the Map but the Strategic and Luxury Resources can be Traded and are Limited to 32. There have been some suggested "work arounds" to add more Strategic and Luxury Resources, but that can cause serious Problems and really Not worth messing with.
...This does cause some difficulties if we want to attach a Resource as necessary to build a Unit or Structure because of the Limited Number of Strategic and Luxury Resources but combinations can also be used to gain the desired results to limit Units or Structures in a Game.

So, only a total of 32 for Strategic and Luxury resources......which mean like nearly 1000 bonus resources?

Could someone explain a little more about the bug? thanks,

To put it simply...the Game can only use 32 Strategic and Luxury Resources by any combination of the two. After that, you will have Resources in some buildings that are not able to have them and many other Problems. Bonus Resources cannot be Traded so are not affected until you reach a saturation Limit that is said to be 1000, which includes the 32 Strategic and Luxury Resources. Based on this, you can have 968 Bonus Resources with a combination of 32 Strategic/ Luxury Resources.

Thanks.....I guess 968 is enough for labeling a map..

32 could be a prob for the others...

It's not a bug, it's a limitation of any binary-based programming code. There is a work-around, but as mentioned above ("ghost resources") it gets very complicated very quickly and requires planning out your entire resource list ahead of time. Speaking of planning, it would also be helpful to have the resource distribution, and resource appearance rate discussions handy.

Technically, it is a bug - caused by a limitation, but still a bug ;) Also, that workaround is needed to even reach 32 strats/lux, otherwise you'll encounter the bug earlier. Above 32 strats/lux it won't work - that's the final conclusion from that thread, unfortunately.

Wowzers...I thought I would relax after work and this has gotten quite complicated. Thanks for the info guys!

I'm getting some strange resource behavior. In game resources are showing up in cities that should not have them.

I have a total of 41 resources. Slots 0-15 in the editor are strategic/luxury resources. Then there are 20 bonus resources and then in slots 36-40 are 5 more strategic resources.

I'm wondering, must strategic and luxury resources be in the first 32 slots only to work correctly?

Thanks.

Gary... Yes the Strategic and Luxury Resources should be in the first 32 slots as far as I know. It works well like that anyway.
You can edit the luxuryicons_small.pcx in your city screen folder to get your Luxury Icons to show correctly. This is probably where you are having problems with incorrect Icons showing in your Game.

That's precisely what me, Vuldacon and Blue Monkey were talking about ;)

Generally, if you have over 32 total (incluing bonuses) resources, you have to order them in a special way or you get the bug. The fix works until you have over 32 strats/luxuries.

There are several ways to do this, but the easiest way would be to place all strategic/luxury resources at the beginning, in one block, then add exactly 32, 64, 96 or any 32*x bonus resources, even fake ones. If I understood clearly, you have 21 strats/luxuries, so your total should be 21+32=53. You can move the 5 resources from the back using Civ3 MultiTool (Rules Organiser module).

You can visit the thread Blue Monkey linked for a detailed explanation.

This is one of the possible sequences. You must avoid these 32-loops for strategic/luxury resources. Int he post linked and the following two posts there are some other sequences that should work: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5118065&postcount=54

The phantom resource bug (or resource-overflow bug) was first brought to mind of the civ3-community by embryodead.

Thanks for the clarification Civinator and embryodead

So...to confirm. I should be able to place the following resources in the following positions in the resource graphics file and I should NOT get the resource bug, correct?

1-8 Strategic resources
9-16 Luxury resources
17-26 Bonus resources only
27-32 more Strategic and/or Luxury resources
33-48 more Bonus resources only
49-58 more Strategic and/or Luxury resources
59-999 Bonue resources only

To place these resources in the editor I use the exact same sequence except starting with the number 0 instead of 1.

No you can have only 32 strategic/ or luxury resources slots 33 - 999 can be bonus resources only.

But he has exactly 32 strategic/luxury resources there... While I feel it's more convenient to place the strats/luxuries in the first 32 slots, you can also place them elsewhere, in a pattern that Gary used on Civinator's advise. Basically, slot X is the same as slot X+32, X+64 and so on - doesn't matter where it's put, as long as no other indexed resources get in the same chain.

One thing I'd like to add it's the editor's slots that matter, not the PCX file.

Embryodead... this can add possible confusion because the pcx file does matter as far as resource positions as the Editor relates to them.

It seems that perhaps it might be more clear to say... regardless of the pattern or where Strategic and or Luxury Resources are placed on the resources.pcx file, Only a Total of 32 Strategic and or Luxury Resources can be used. They can be placed in any pattern containing 32 resources that also include Bonus Resources or "Fake Resources" to equal 32 Resources in the Group of slots on the pcx file.

I agree that it is Much easier to just add the Strategic and Luxury Resources to the First 32 slots then add the Bonus Resources.

Okay, I am actually more confused on this after Vuldacon's post. Sorry, man

I figure in the editor you scroll around to get the number of the icon you want and it shows up. Actually, I have read it over a few times and maybe it's me or the fact that it's 3:30 am, but I don't get it. I know I could just check some of the mods I have downloaded to try and figure it out, but I like my answers like my women: quick and dirty. No, wait. That's not right!

Well sure it can be clearer, but you can change the "links" to whatever you want, as WilliamOfOrange said.

WilliamOfOrange... IF the Resources are added to the Resources.pcx file correctly (meaning they are already Arranged as they should be to work) you then add them into the Editor the same way and they will work fine.
Why Scroll around, .
