How exactly does this work? Does it spawn a new copy of your civ-specific hero, or does it create a copy with all promotions intact?

Also, what happens if Cassiel casts it?

It creates a new copy of the civ specific hero. I don't think there is a way to keep track of his promotions, level, etc. I don't think that the Grigori can use this ability at all.

The spell does additionally have the ability to give you a free champion if cast if a graveyard now. The Grigori can use this ability of the spell.
