034. Monty's Jaguars were lured out and the result is...
No more Jaguar at the end of the turn! Three Mohawk Warriors each delivered a death blow! That was easy.
But just when I am about to lay siege to the seemingly weak city, during the end turn Monty rushed Walls on the city, making the city too tough for Mohawk Warriors to take down...
035. Then I recalled that Monty did have 1000+ cash sitting there, waiting to give away for whoever was willing to make peace with him. (At the time Monty was warring Iroquois and all members of the Empire team.)
From experience, I know teamed AIs are extremely eager to make peace. Since I bribed Isabella to declare war on Monty on Turn 119, severely weakened Monty is pretty much guaranteed to lose that 1000+ gold to one of the members of the Empire team on Turn 129.
I don't want to let the Empire team get the 1000+ gold! So I reloaded the autosave of the turn, killed the 3 Jaguars again, and signed a Peace Treaty with Monty. 1108 gold was the price of peace for 10 turns. Nice!
036. With the latest surge of income, I purchased another resource tile - Marble.
The city's natural expansion puts this tile to a very low priority, so it is much better that I do not wait and buy the tile directly. It comes with a big price tag (double the base price), but once I harvest it and sell it for up to 900 gold, I will get all the investment back.
038. 10 turns of peace is nothing in Marathon. During the short peace, I recalled my Mohawk warriors to fight some barbarians in the meantime. Soon it was again the time to declare war on Monty and finish him off for good!
And I cannot let go another opportunity to renew my alliance with Venice. When Monty declares war on Venice the second time, it is a permanent war, and I again acquired the mission to kill 3 Aztec units for 100 influence points! And I am not really paying the bribe!
039. Monty's cash was taken by me for the short peace - so he can't rush a Wall here anymore. The city fell to Iroquois with the help of a fresh trained warrior from the capital, the 4th melee unit. I sold my extra Irons to the Empire team, so I don't have extra Iron to upgrade it for now.
040. Marble is ready for sale! I mentioned that I took a large loan from the Empire team. And of course I have no intention to pay all the insane interest for 90 turns.
So here it is! War declared on the Empire Team! - after getting another 1000 gold from them.
Note: Each 3 gold on Marathon is equivalent to 1 gold on Standard Speed. However, it is cheaper to rush buildings and units on Marathon. A unit that costs 100 gold on Standard Speed to rush only costs 200 gold on Marathon. So the actual conversion rate is 2X (for rushing units/buildings) or 3X (for Research Agreement and Resource Trading, etc.) depending on the situation.
041. Iroquois is rich! The most intuitive way to spend all the cash is to rush more units. But I was thinking about getting a Heroic Epic first, so the units fight 15% more effectively. As a result, I threw 880 gold in the water to buy a Barrack, which will never be needed, in the small Iron town.
From hindsight, I should have simply built a Barrack there instead of a Monument, so I can save 880 gold for something more useful.
042. Monty had almost no unit left, and could only watch hopelessly when the Iroquois Mohawks surrounded his capital. The first Iroquois Great General interestingly appeared on Monty's conquered and puppeted city.
043. Got enough policy points to get Meritocracy for Steel! But I still need 3 more turns in Metal Casting (indicated on the top left corner of the above picture). I am quite happy with the close timing here, although it is nothing about my skill and purely coincidence.
044. While the Heroic Epic requires quite a few more turns to complete - I noticed a little problem here - when Metal Casting is researched, I will enter the Medieval Era. Warriors become obsolete in the Medieval Era.
The cheapest way to make a Long-swordsman is to buy a Warrior and upgrade it through Swordsman. So here I decided to purchase two more Warriors without the Heroic Epic. Later on, I might let them join the front line, or let them stay at home to fight easier barbarians.
045. Monty's capital has been captured! There is one more Aztec city to the northeast!
At the same time we heard the news that a City State has been conquered. I wonder who conquered it?
Indeed, the Great Library was still available. I totally forgot about it and went for Great Scientist without much thinking. I was kinda used to Standard Speed game, where the AIs always make the Great Library a priority.
046. War declaration, if not bribed to make, only lasts 7 turns. So very soon Hiawatha saw the emissary from the United States.
Normally I would not agree for peace easily, since soon I will have to declare war again, and each war declaration hurts international reputation. Being hated hurts resource trades. But here our only enemy is the Empire team, so they are going to hate Iroquois anyway. So I agreed with peace so I can sell my mineral resources to the Empires again. More cash!
047. I was very surprised to find out that after taking Aztec's top two cities, Hiawatha instantly becomes the leader in Land. Normally this wouldn't happen as the more aggressive AIs should have started the infinite city spawn at this point. Or am I lucky that all of them decide to play peaceful cultural games?
Iroquois also had the most powerful army at the time. I didn't expect it would be this easy. Sometimes I miss Alexander. He seems to be the only worthy AI opponent of a human player. If Alex was in this game, he would have got 4-5 cities at this point and a small sea of army.
048. As planned, I sold all precious metals to the Empire team once more. Not only are they low on tile count, but also they have poor income. I think the two is correlated. The richest AIs are all those who spreads like an E. coli colony under 37 degree Celsius.
049. I was looking around and found something funny - there is a half-built Great Library in Aztec's capital. Shame on Monty! He did successfully build a wonder in the capital - the Great Lighthouse. I didn't know how great it is until later.
