050. Finished Metal Casting and entered Medieval Era. The Empire team reached it a lot earlier than me. But I am not too worried since I am going to have...
051. The Longhouse, where quality family dining happens! Well, not really the Longhouse. I rushed it so I can start accumulating points for a future Great Engineer. Its usefulness won't show up until much later. The real difference maker is...
052. It is Steel from the Great Scientist from Meritocracy! Indeed I should have picked a Great Engineer to rush a Great Library, than pick Steel. This way I get one more Great Engineer point per turn.
p.s. I find that on Marathon, the AIs become much less capable of completing wonders. I guess this is because their units die way too fast for various reasons, and have to train new ones from cities.
053. Having acquired the cutting-edge technology of Steel, Iroquois became the envy of the Empire team and immediately received condemnation from the Queen of Spain. We will take the foul words politely... and use the edge on you next.
054. There goes the end of Aztec! And since Monty lost his two starting workers to Iroquois, he seemed to be lagging behind in tile improvement. Many resources are left untouched. Luckily there are lots of Iroquois workers pouring down from the Rockie mountain to help.
Happiness has become a serious issue, so the next research targets are all happiness techs (Calendar, Trapping)
055. Monty had to fight a three-way war (Venice, Spain, and Iroquois), in which he probably smartly split his army into three directions. He accomplished nothing and only saw his once rich and powerful empire crumble rapidly in front of the Iroquois Mohawk Warriors.
Even on Marathon, that time is short. It is time to put down those Mohawks and wear the full-body armors! War to the Empires! (The 50% fighting bonus in Forests and Jungles do carry over.)
056. Iroquois has become the score leader! I didn't expect it would be this easy. I played other Marathon games before, but I still saw a few AIs doing exceptionally well (usually it is Alexander or Oda). Washington is also quite an aggressive city settler. I am surprised that he hasn't really started his city spawns in South America. Maybe he is sandwiched by two friendly neighbors and has no elbow room?
057. I was looking around the currently available map to decide a good spot to settle my 3rd city, preferably with extra luxurious resources or Iron. Since I expect to fight some tough war in South America later, I need to raise a powerful army. And I need more than 6 units of Iron. I make two candidate sites:
Site 1. 1 Gem, 2 Pearl, Horse and Banana.
Site 2. 2 Pearls, 1 Wine, 6 Irons.
I like Site 2 especially, since it is facing both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. This means that the city will serve as a "Panama Canel" (we are still in Mexico, just an analogy). I won't need to raise a separate navy for Pacific Ocean and Caribbean. Site 2 it is!
058. I moved in my Scout to take a look at what Spain has. I was very glad to see that Isabella has no Iron in sight! (I sold her 2 units of Iron before, that's why she has a Swordsman - now naked Swordsman, walking around) That will put her on a distinctive disadvantage.
None of the Spanish cities are big. But they all have something for me - Furs, Silk, Whale... lots of things I can sell. And the best of all - it is filled with forest.
060. War declared! I extracted enough cash from the Empire team to upgrade 3 Mohawks to Long-swordsman. But even without the upgrade, my Mohawk was more than enough to dismantle Spain's ancient-era unit. Three attacks, three killed!
062. So what does the Spainish Queen do to prepare her capital for defense? She... pushes out the Catapult into Barcelona's border for us to demolish for fun, leaving nothing to defend Madrid! That's a really disappointing performance for the AI...
063. At least she knows to ask for peace after 7 turns. All the Empire teammates joined the begging, but of course I can't stop now! To the unification of North America!
064. Somehow the wandering naked Swordsman came back to Madrid to defend - only to go down with the city. That's it for the Spanish capital! Only one city left!
And since it is a small city with very poor defense, I only sent 3 Long-swordsman there, with 2 of them being able to get contact with city. When one is sufficiently wounded, I swap a fresh one in. That's it for Spain!
066. Now I have a good home base to work on. First, I arranged a peace deal with the rest of the Empire team, and immediately started selling resources again. I find that the least I can get is 409 gold out of 900 per resource (before the AI hates me so much that they refuse trading), which is still quite good.
067. With the new round of resource trade income, I rushed out a Settler to head over to the "Panama Canel" site. Quite a long march from here. But nothing is too far away on Marathon. My Heroic Epic at home is almost ready, too. I will be able to buy powerful units from it.
