Review of Civ III:Conquests at IGN

Interesting, unit support costs for Republic has doubled, England and Carthage are Seafaring, Celts and Iroquois are Agricultural, planes have lethal sea bombard, 50 turn maximum research for techs.

Great with those screenshots from the Napoleonic Conquest ;) Finaly we had some...

Bah! A measly score of 8.5 is too low for this player's taste!

Regarding the "Rise of Rome" scenario:

"For the Roman player, whose Legions can also build roads, you can develop a fairly convenient road network relatively early in the game without sacrificing your military development."

Beautiful! I've always kind of thought the Roman Legionary should have that ability. There is definitely history to back it up. I've considered modding it so they do. Not quite sure why I never have. I cannot wait to play this scenario!

The game sounds great

Reflections of the Napoleonic scenario:

Interesting these stats of this french infantryman (voltigeur): http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMedia...url=http://pc.ign.com/objects/566/566973.html

The stats are 6.5.1! A little bit better in attack then defence! I guess the importance of infantry in this period will be greatly shown in the Napoleonic conquest! Did fear that you would be able to conquer the world only from horseback, as you can in the main game! This looks great! I really wonder what the stats can be for the Imperial cavalry??! ;)

I'm also very excited to know more about the naval warfare in this scenario. No cities at Corsica and Sardinia I noticed (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMedia...url=http://pc.ign.com/objects/566/566973.html) and I really hope its possible to sail from the Atlantic to the Mede. Not easy to see from the map. Also a pitty we cant see any ships on the screenshots...
I'm a bit disapointed I can't see northern Africa! Egypt and Alexandria should be a part of the map for sure....:king: :king: :king::crazyeye:

Hmmm... Another thing I picked up on. With the celing of 40 turns a tech being pushed back those tech gambits will work less and less.

Not to mention the increased "rush production" prices.

9 new military units!

:goodjob: :goodjob:

OK, they gave Conquests an 8.5, which sounds pretty good, right? Guess what score they gave Play the World? 8.4

Thus, if we take IGN's pre-release "review" as holy writ, Conquests is approximately 1% (1.190476%, to be precise) better than PtW.

Man these guys are terrible.

Defensive first strike for Musketmen. Sounds like a range 0 bombard to me. I hope they extended the logic to all the gun toting units, or this unit will be a little anachronistic.

:goodjob: on Republic change; I was beginning to think it would still be the top dog of early Governments, but this should level it.

The new elements of strategy, both in the epic game and in the scenario is what intrigues me the most.
@CFC - there are a lot of good units created, so that was not my biggest concern. I think the enjoyment for me would lie in the fact that I now will try to evolve onto a new level of knowledge from my humble stand at regent level and onto Sid level.
And I suppose the additons made in the gameplay elements require a lot more work than making graphics and sounds.

Will be interesting to have a go. But not untill after my exams of course.

Yeah, noticed that too. But the breakdown for C3C seems fine (it simply does not deserve any awards for Gfx and Sound), just ptw scores far too high in the hindsight.

This is crap, I know. I agree with all that said it is a low score. It should have gotten at least 9/10 because it is incredible how hard the producers at BreakAway Games and Firaxis worked under such a tight schedule to create the game. Whoever gave it the score clearly has not played it enough as well.
Working hard = greatest game.

The change to the Republican government will certainally have me rethinking my tatics whenever I play a full game:)

That anti-tank unit sounds cool as well, more late game units are always good:goodjob:

That Japanese scenario lokks alot better than I imagined as well....18 warlords:eek: gonna be fun:cool:

While I tend to agree with this move to ensure that Republic is a peace-time government, I would hope that Republic now has a one free unit per city to allow for defensive provisions. Otherwise, this extra maintenence cost could cripple the economy of a mid-size Republic with only defensive units! Any word on whether Democracy will see this increase as well...?

Do what I do, use Monarchy ;)

If you have an empire with high population, Feudalism would be even worse to maintain even a small army (3 gold per unit!)

I think people will probably stay out of Republic untilthey have many marketplaces and large cities.
