RevolutionDCM for BTS

Update and good news glider :)

I have it working.

After thinking about this whole thing over and over I thought it maybe in the Make Files.
So I used the make file with came with RevDCM 2.90 and there where a couple of little differences in some FLAG settings between yours and the one I use.

After changing the path of the libraries in your file I did a rebuild, after a clean build, and I got a DLL what is 8kb bigger then the last one I got.

Exchanged the DLL with yours and started a game and it had the buttons showing.

There still is a difference of 12kb between our DLL's though.

My guess is that maybe some settings in my Visual C++ make it so that the DLL 'optimize" some more? Just brainstorming here, I am not so familaire with the C++ editor yet and left almost everything default after installation.

Another thing I noticed is when I click in solution explorer on "Show All Files there were a couple of Header and Source files with a red thingie in them.

Files like 'CyCityInterface2.cpp, CvBugoptions.h and about 10 more.
If I rightclick those I had the option to include them in the project so if I thought by myself including them would make the DLL grow.

So I included those files(About 12 of them) in the project but the DLL is exactly the same after a rebuild. O well, it works and maybe some guru on the forums can maybe tell if size differences in DLL's with the same source files are possible.

Anyway, As it seems (Played only about 20 turns) it seems all to be working so I am a happy camper and I gonna mod some modcomps into RevDCM 2.90 tommorrow.

EMBX well done with that level of skill stick around. CivFanatics Civ4 needs modders. There is still so much to do! I am itching to get stuck into the range bombard AI because I can see way's forward. But I also see the work (I wish I were more ignorant but I will probably regret wishing that :) )....

Are there any aspects of RevolutionDCM that the AI is not very good at playing with? I ask because I note that some of RevDCM is turned off by default (DCM, IDW, and Super Spies). I'm still new to the mod and I prefer a balanced game (I'm the kind of guy who must only play on Noble).

If I try to debug, the crash happens deep in the .exe (so impossible to see where this is coming from. This usually means it's an art problem. Every other time a crash like this has occured for a mod, I could always track it using the logs, specifically the resmgr.log or the LSystem.log. What would happen is the art that was causing the problem, would be the last item on the list of those logs. Not so this time, nothing is wrong, and no units or buildings listed in them...

The only thing I can find, that seems to be an art issue is in the XmlArtTagVerification.log which looks like this:

Searching for BetterShipScale, in every folder, and every part of the SDK, Python, XML, everything, yeilds nothing. I have no idea why or how this is getting searched for. Obviously this is an issue inherited from WoC, which makes things impossible to track down; wish it was never hammered through RevDCM because of stuff like this. But being that I'm stuck with it, and can't figure out where this is coming from, or why, hoping someone out there would have some idea how to get the WoC stuff to stop trying to load, and just die. I want WoC and everything related to it to just go away, and stop giving me errors, or at least stop printing errors that are confusing even if they aren't the cause.

Also if anyone has any idea what could be causing the crash, would be nice, but this bettershipscale WoC madness is the only thing I can think of, as it's the only thing related to art that seems to be off. And I can't figure out how the .exe could be causing a crash without it pointing to the DLL, unless the crash is caused by art.

Thanks for the reports from LoR. I'm a bit confused because there are no WoC modules in RevDCM. At one stage Better Ship Scale was there but it was taken out ages ago. BSS doesn't add or change any tags even if it did exist. It simply changes the scale value of ships units. I'll definitely note down the multiplayer religion issue you have found.

The AI is a very reasonable BTS player these days with no really major standout problems anywhere at the intermediate skill level. The AI in Revolutions is pretty good as well but of course could be improved. Range bombard is the AI's biggest weakness for sure. However even with that turned on, it still produces very enjoyable games and I use it all the time. The range bombard AI could definitely be improved, primarily around range bombard's fantastic ability to take combat out of the cities a bit more. Range bombarding from cities and into cities is significantly less successful than doing so from properly constructed field fortifications like forts and or fortified unit defenders in the field. The AI knows how to attack and defend cities very well even with RB on, but it doesn't yet know how to build proper field structures to deploy range bombard, nor does it know how to concentrate range bombarding seige into these field placements intelligently. Without this knowledge, the human can under some circumstances defend and attack better than the AI with range bombard turned on. There is also an issue that because RB uses the standard collateral damage model in BTS, range bombarding from two tiles out with artillery (as the AI will sometimes do in situations where there is little risk from doing so) seems to be too ineffective (would have to take a proper look).

It really depends what type of game you want to have. A challenging game at it's absolute limit, or a challenging game that is edged down in difficulty, just for some fun and extra possible tactics that RB enables. None of the options in RevDCM severely unbalance the single player game against the AI for intermediate skilled players. If there were, they wouldn't be in the mod.

EDIT: There is another issue with the range bombard AI. As yet the AI doesn't realize how effective a protected stack of range bombarding siege can be at issuing collateral damage (and thus to stay out of range of it), because the AI assumes that the only collateral damage that will be inflicted is if the stack of siege makes an attack move (standard BTS siege model). If I had the time, that would be the first and easiest issue to deal with.

Yeah, I can't find BSS scale anywhere in LoR or RevDCM, so why is it being referenced in logs?
 
Thanks for the mod guys, is great. I just played it with fabwed and a few other guys in multiplayer and the experience was awsome ... untill around 1300 AD when we started getting oos problems. We rejoined many times but it was not fixed. It's a great mod for singleplayer though

No, we actually did some stuff to improve the stability of multiplayer. However a lack of play testers has made it impossible to track down any remaining bugs (and I don't have the ability to test MP, and glider doesn't have the time). Most reports were that it was working though, however it's aparent there are still issues. Normally I would ask for the logs to see what's up at this point from markoffit, but I am going to branch off on my own work now, as I have succefully extirpated WOC from my working version of LoR, and have decided to rebuild Revolutions in the dll, which means I really don't want to invest time working on a codebase I plan on abandoning in the near future anyway.
 
Don't you want to keep the same base of LoR and RevDCM?
I mean IMO your improvements in LoR should be implemented in RevDCM too
 
I agree, once revolutions makes it to the dll, the python version will be obsolete, not just for LoR.

I've removed WOC, and it's a significant undertaking (will take months to do). I'm not going to hide my work, it'll be available as always; however it's a separate project from RevDCM. Keep in mind I have removed WOC (something glider, RevDCM's creator, doesn't want), and as I start building the functionality, from the ground up, significant changes to the functionality of some RevDCM features will be changed, and others flat out cut.
 
Was WOC that thing with modular loading? See how much I care.
Keep in mind I tried playing with Revolutions twice and never again because I disliked some parts of it, so significant changes to the functionality is what I look forward to the most.
 
I was helping a guy in CC with some gamefonts, and used the RevDCM (WoC) as base as I had to redo them from scratch, when I noticed that the bottom line in the corporation section of gamefont_75.tga was "broken". (Not the first line, but the lines after that.)

Just thought I let you know.

Yes Phungus I have known for a long time that you do not like WoC and so there is very little point repeating your grievances. Best wishes to you on your new project and sincerely hope that by eradicating WoC and putting Revolutions into the DLL that it all works out. Please I ask that you leave the RevDCM SVN as it is.

Yes Fuyu I have known for a long time that you do not like Revolutions. Best wishes to you and hope that you will be able to come up with some positive ideas in tandem with Phungus instead of repeating your well known grievances on Revolutions.

I'll be taking a long break best wishes to you all. Personally I think RevDCM 290 is one of the most amazing efforts I have ever witnessed in my puny life from a bunch of volunteer programmers. That is honestly all that I can say. Sad about multiplayer but whatever. RevDCM probably represents the last line in a long historical lineage of single player oriented civ versions as we used to understand them.
