RFC Europe Files

downloaded 9 earlier today and started a game as Byzantium. But every time I try and talk to the Venetians and vice-versa the game immediately kicks me to desktop.

So main file now is Alpha 8 or Alpha 9?

I see you have a "new" version with different Turkey-spawn. Can I safely update my version upto the newest revision, or should I copy my version and update only that one, because you say it's a test version.

Note: the following advice is only relevant for developers who use an SVN client to get copies of the mod.

The new Ottoman version is a different branch -- a whole different copy of the mod. You can safely update your SVN version as you have always done, and you won't even notice the Turkey Branch. Please continue to make any changes you have to the main branch -- your procedure to do this is the same as before.

Let me try to explain. The directory structure on sourceforge is now:

rfceurope/RFCEurope
rfceurope/RFCEurope_TurkeyBranch

The way I have this project checked out just the RFCEurope folder directly into my Mods folder:

My Games/Beyond the Sword/Mods/RFCEurope

This way I have RFCEurope is the correct location for Civ 4 to find it. With this setup I also checkout RFCEurope_TurkeyBranch as My Games/Beyond the Sword/Mods/RFCEurope_TurkeyBranch and now effectively have two separate mods (but linked through SVN so that there are automatic ways to bring changes from one mod to the other).

Some people might have checked out the parent folder, called rfceurope. This way your mod lives inside /rfceurope/RFCEurope/ (but presumably this won't load into Civ unless you change the mod pah). Still, if you were doing it this way updating to the latest version will automatically grab you TurkeyBranch as well -- but will keep it separate.

Alpha 9c is now available! This version merely fixes some corrupt graphics files in Alpha9 and Alpha9b.

To download, visit our sourceforge page and click the big green box.

Or go directly there: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rfceurope/files/RFCEurope_Alpha9c.zip/download

Initial versions (Alpha9 and Alpha9b) had a few corrupt graphics files. If you have one of these versions and get crashes, then you can also download just the fixed files at https://sourceforge.net/projects/rfceurope/files/RFCEurope_Alpha9b_patch.zip/download. Just unzip this folder, drag the contents into your RFCEurope folder, and choose to replace any duplicate files.

And... there was a bug in the patch. If you downloaded the fixed files (Alpha9b_patch) before 10 AM Eastern (US) time you should re-download. Same link as before.

If I downloaded 9c at 7.00 am.(BST) this morning is that OK? Or do I have to do it again?

If you downloaded the full version you're fine (and this is certainly the easiest way to make sure that you get it correct). The error was only in the small "patch" file.

@sedna: Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but...guys, I haz a problem. Serious one
1) All started when I tried getting the Turkish_Branch 'child-folder', and I did some delets-regets-etc.
2) It could not checkout in the mod folder of BTS, because...."access was denied" or something kinda like that. Neither checkout somewhere else and transfer the mod files to the BTS/Mods folder, because of the same thing. Tried reinstalling the Tortoise, making the Mods folder read-only....Utter fail, the problems still exists.

Any idea of solving it? And sorry if it is a noobish problem. :)

I don't know off-hand. I just verified that I can still checkout updates from the SVN, so it's not a server-side problem. Can you post the exact error message? It sounds like a problem with permissions on your computer. The folder you're checking out into must have write-access (making it "read-only" won't work, of course).

Yeah, definitely sounds like the problem is with permissions on your computer. Odd that it was working before. I know you're running Vista -- perhaps you can follow the instructions here to enable you to have permissions on this folder?

Many many thanks!

And BTW, number 15 from the guide:
# Reconsider why you’re using Windows.

I was looking into the svn repository and noticed an entire Turkish three. What is the deal with that? Are we working on the new three or still the main one?

We're working on the main one. The Turkish Branch is simply a branch I started for experimenting with Turkish spawn options (notably spawning closer to Constaninople and getting some troops in the Balkans). If successful, I will merge it back into the main branch.

That reminds me of a question I have for you. When we started, we made sure that Civ spawn regions didn't overlap because you thought that might cause a crash. In my Turkish experiments I've just moved their spawn region over, so it does now overlap with Byzantium, but I've yet to see any crashes. Do you know of a specific function that might crash with overlapping spawn regions? Of course I can re-draw the Byzantine core area, but I'm just curious.

It is more subtle then this. Suppose Byzantine and Ottoman core maps overlap:

1. A city in the overlap area would simultaneously constitute a stability award and a stability penalty for each civ. Also, I am not sure the code will handle this correctly, in any way it is a logical problem.

2. The second problem is more of a problem. Suppose the Ottomans destroy the Byzantines, then the Byzantines respawn and pick up the cities in their core (including the one in the overlap). This will create a huge stability penalty for the Ottomans. Furthermore, suppose the Ottomans collapse in their turn, just so that they can respawn later and take the overlap city away from the Byzantines and cause them to collapse.....

Does this make sense? I hope so. The game doesn't "crash" as in "crash to desktop", however, the logic gets messed up and the gameplay effects are unpredictable.
