RFC Europe: Small bugs/fixes

Also I wonder:
1) Why do some buttons (dds) have a size of 5.48 Kb while all others are 4.12? Re-saving them in a proper format without altering anything makes them to be 4.12 Kb. What could cause those additional bytes?
2) Where are the buttons for the ethnic units? Are the /assets/art/interface/buttons/units the only ones?

P.S. You told that WB doesn't crash on you, but whenever I try to go to WB on that save, I get a CtD.

1) Sedna removed extra mipmaps from icons so they're smaller. The few ones I added have 6 mipmaps. While unnecessary, this shouldn't cause crashes as such, even original Civ4 icons have varied number of mipmaps. It's a clue still, as I'm pretty lost otherwise.
2) Yes.

I'm not sure it's ethnic units anymore, it's still crashing. I'm removing all the new ones atm.

EDIT: Yeah I know it's weird, after trying it several times it seems to be random, that is, 1 out of 5 times it doesn't crash. Also, I just removed all the new units from XML and it still crashes.

You suggestion that a partially rebuilt DLL might be to blame (in addition to the obvious Venice leaderhead original issue) is very useful. I think I might not have completely rebuilt the solution the last time... I will try re-compiling and post a new DLL here shortly.

The good news is -- I've tried Deon's latest save on my Vista machine and it crashes! This is good news because it will make it easier for me to figure out what's going wrong.

It is pseudo-random, not crashing with 100% certainty. The bad news is a re-compiled DLL doesn't fix it.

Windows XP sp3 Home Edition

No crashes yet, Vista sp1 home edition

Even with that save? :)

I keep on hoping to see the fix :P. I really love this mod, it's much more detailed in terms of local wars and territory due to europe-only map, and I like religion points (reminds me Crossroads of the World scenario).

Can people experiencing or not experiencing crashes let me know if they are using Vista or XP? Thanks.

Vista SP2 - no crashes to desktop but on about three occasions where I have left the game running and walked away for more than an hour, the game has frozen after about two clicks when I return.

Thanks for the reports everyone. You guys are good testers. Unfortunately, there isn't a pattern. For me, no crashes on XP SP3, but crashes on Vista. I think we can safely rule out this being purely a Vista/XP thing.

Because Deon's save crashes quite reliably on entering cheat-mode, I think this gives us an important clue. A little forum-searching turned up at least one other report of games crashing when entering cheat (cntrl-z) mode: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7863450

Here the problem appears to have been with the LSystem, which places city buildings and terrain improvements. The latest version does have some new wonders and modifications to the building art. Possibly some particular mixes of buildings/wonders cause a crash when the game tries to display them?

I've got another thought. I'm playing a game as Genoa which keeps crashing every few turns, always while the game is auto-saving. You can go back to the previous turn and it will usually play thru that auto-save but crash at the next one. Always the MS report says its a Win32 failure, quoting things like "Offset: 00288fe" and file "Locals-\Temp\d9cc_accompat.txt" whatever that means. Maybe it fails while it's trying to recognize something in the game. I really don't know. Any thoughts?

Good News Everybody!

I have, I believe, found the source of the crash -- at least in Deon's Gustav Vasa-1522 save. The culprit appears to be the Belfry building. One of the art .dds files for this building was corrupt -- in Alpha9b it is 1K smaller than it is in the sourceforge and earlier alpha versions.

Anyhow, there's a belfry (normally) built during this turn, and replacing that art file with the correct one, I have now had 4 non-crashes in a row. I am attaching the fixed Belfry files to this post, and you should replace the folder Assets\Art\Structures\Buildings\Belfry with this one. Please let me know if this fixes things for you (and re-post games which still crash).
