no clue as to what causes it, but when ending the turn in 1544 the game usually crashes/freezes when the 'Counter Reformation' event pops

That's odd. It works fine for me. I tried it twice and the game gives the proper popup and I can select the proper action. Both choices also work fine, no crash or anything, the game keeps on playing past 1544.

Were you doing something else specific in those turns?

only moving of built units and chose 'Trading Companies' as free tech
that's why I used the save from 1542, thought it might have something to do with the free tech or so..
the only other thing I initially did which had some 'oddness' to it was:
there is a fortress NE of Cordoba with Longbowmen and without a road connection(plague safezone), I had the armored lancers/workers there and upgraded them all to knights, the 'odd' thing was (small bug) that the ugrade cost was shown as 0 for all units (alt+click to upgrade all)
had something similar with an Austrian game where I afterwards wasn't able to move units anymore or end the turn, was able to change production and resarch etc. though

I will keep an eye out, but it would be hard to find the bug like that.

Just tried again and it still crashes, but after I had to reboot a few times I started the game in window mode, one of those attemts managed to get past the event and gave me the prosecutors. So I can continue the game anyway.
Had just hoped this might be something somewhat 'easy' to find
And it actually only crashes in window mode when I choose to not debug with visual studio. In full screeen mode the turn simply never ends and I'm not able get out of the game.

And I've had that event several times with other civs, have never had a problem with it until now.

If it depends on windows vs full screen, then it may be graphics dependent. I will try it again to make sure.

I know it's kind of annoying, but the bug/problem is persistant. Only now 1548..
Happens during autosave now (maybe too last time). I have the save in case it might help, but I can't load it. It crashes immediately(I'm staying in window mode recently).
Damn.. kinda liked that game

Do you get an error message on the crash? If it just kicks you out to desktop, then a screenshot will not help.

Try restarting civilization and reloading the savegame yourself. Does it crash again? Can other people try the savegame and see if it crashes for them?

Beta 13. The odd part is that it works for me.

Dl'ed and put back a clean install of Beta 13
The mod didn't even start, it crashes during loading that save (without any error messages, not even python expections)

the last save was an autosave on the turn it crashed a few turns after I got past the initial freeze/crash: thought it might help to have a save right before/during the problem

Not sure if this is a bug... but as Russia (orthodox) I was unable to get the protestant reformation. I found protestantism and then it just sits there.. it doesn't give me the option to switch and it doesn't really spread either.

Does the reformation only work with catholic nations?

Indeed, you can only found Protestantism if you are Catholic
There was a bug about founding it with other state religion too, but it's already fixed for the next version

Only Catholics can get the Reformation event and in the next version, only Catholics would be able to found Protestantism.

Ok good to know. I feel like there are a lot of implicit parts of the game like that (example: you can't have religion if you have the wrong civic, different from vanilla civ4). I feel like someone new playing this could get confused.

Also did that Venezia constantinople Historic Goal ever get debugged?
