Rhye's; some simple questions before I load

I am interested in Rhye’s of Civilization but, as it has its own tech tree and Civpedia, would like to be reassured:
Technical Q
It can be installed just alongside other scenarios within the CivIII (I have Civ3 Complete), and not have to replace the whole game: Am I right?
& General Q
Is setting the religion an essential part of the Rhyes of Civ game? Because I would have thought that actually a Civilization's military, scientific or cultural development is as likely to be 'in spite of' rather than 'because of' its religion. But perhaps thats a matter of opinion!
