Richard Sherman - Thug?

For the love of God, don't talk about master and slave hard drives in California.

And I'll continue to use niggard as often as I like, thanks much. We don't punish people for using the word truck just because it happens to sound similar to a totally unrelated naughty four letter word. Anyone getting offended over its use due to their ignorance just needs to have it explained to them. If they still get offended, truck them.

There is five letter word here that is censored even though it is mostly used in the correct sense of the word, not in the racists sense of the word. The word means a slight opening in a material, such as armour.

Why, though? There are plenty of synonyms that don't sound like racial slurs.

truck is a lot further away in sound than niggard, especially since the construction of the latter makes the d want to be unvoiced. I didn't even know that word existed until that scandal btw. So yeah, imo, that word is fine, but since no one uses it anyway except for people who want to assert that it's fine to use that word, it ends up racializing the meaning and makes it fake-fine and actually not fine.

In fact, I pretty much only hear or read the word in discussions like these.

Did you know Tolkien used it in LoTR? Yep! More proof he's racist!

bhsup, Tolkein wrote LOTR closer to the McKinley presidency than he did to the present day...

No one said anything about you or Tolkien being racist, and I fail to see the relevance in the diction used in a book written sixty years ago. Especially considering that book was written before the civil rights movement (when no one cared if a white guy used the n-word), and the word we're talking about is frowned about for sounding like a racial slur. So what the hell is your point?

So? The meaning of the word hasn't changed one iota since then. All that has changed is some people get offended because it sounds sorta like a bad word.

Probably to irritate and mess with people and make them go "wait what?", though it would be pretty dumb to use it about anyone but a white person :p

i'd still never want to use it though lol

Do you realize the history of the word "niggard" sounds like? Of course people are going to get offended, especially since "niggard" is such an obscure word that there is literally no reason at all to use, as there are plenty of other words to use that mean the same thing and offend no one. I don't understand why you're so outraged about it, you're being ridiculous.

That's my point, there's no legitimate reason to use it.

Yeah but nowadays the only time someone uses it is to bring up the word in order to defend it, or to say the word very conscientiously once in a while so that it isn't only brought up in order to defend it.

But screwing with people is fun sometimes :(

I'm not outraged so much as couldn't give a fig of someone is offended if I ever choose to use it. That's totally their problem. If I'd been the person fired for saying it, I'd probably be outraged.

All I've been trying to do is showcase the hypocrisy of people who -are- offended by its use due to the whole slew of words that sound like other bad words. Truck if I care if you agree or not.

You're being disingenuous if you think saying "truck" is akin to saying "niggard". A better example would be "fock", but even then it's not really the same for obvious reasons.

I would think you would have had mixed feelings given that the employer was exercising its God-given right to fire an employee for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all.

Yeaaaaah there's actually no hypocrisy whatsoever. Pretty amazed you think that's the conversation anyone is having. No one thinks racist words are bad because they count as "bad words". And truck is not a word that, now in three posts to you, count as words that people only seem to bring up in order to defend.

Fair enough, I retract the hypocrisy remark. You guys somehow rationalize it in your heads, it seems, so that there is no perceived hypocrisy on your parts.

If it was used at a black person I can't really blame them for being offended(because who am I to say?).

The better example of people being too sensitive is when that dude got suspended for 30 days from ESPN for using the phrase "A <snip> In The Armor" for a headline after Jeremy Lin had a horrible game following the original mad hype run. I think everyone knows what goes in the blank. I would assume it was an innocent mistake.

This also reminds me of the time MARTA did a restructuring and had Red/Blue/Yellow etc lines...and the "Yellow" line went right through the predominantly Asian neighborhoods. Can't say I blame them for being pissed off and getting it changed to "Gold" :p

^My bad, <snip> actually gets the point across better in hindsight :p

Where is the hypocrisy? Because people don't get offended at "truck"?
