Richard Sherman - Thug?

You know, Forma, sometimes i am not sure if you are making a parody of what your reply supposedly would seem like to someone who expects a formulaic response.

So i suppose i'll leave it at that :\
What is "formulaic" is repeatedly engaging in the same jerkish trolling.

The league hasn't said what specifically they fined him for. It could very well have been for flashing the choke sign.

Did he apologize specifically for the incident with Crabtree?
It appears to have been for the choke sign he supposedly aimed at Kapernick".

You are ignoring (or possibly have no understanding of) the timing and context of Sherman's words and are definitely ignoring his body language and as I said earlier, actions. It was inappropriate. Hence the flag, fine, and apology. That is all.
I'm like 95% sure you're just trolling, because you're not making any sense. Your reasoning is more circular than Planet Hillary.

Holy moly, yes. When TO spiked the ball in the Cowboys' star at midfield, he didn't even say anything. It is still taunting and still out of line.

Spiking the ball midfield is actually against the rules because somebody has to go chase after it and it delays the game unnecessarily. This is why they can spike in the end zone, the game is already paused so it's not as big of a deal

Spiking the ball midfield is obnoxious, spiking it after a touchdown is awesome.

Another great post :) I took the liberty of framing the above for posterity. Now you are immortal:

:splat:
Everything eventually comes to an end, so you won't get any credit from me unless you can provide a causal mechanism (i.e. a theory) and a timeframe.

Guys - my point is that he was acting unprofessional, immature, and a jerk. I forgot the coach who use to say "act like you have been there before". I have a son in sports, and I always tell him to act in a classy manner, win or lose. When he acts immature, win or lose, I immediately speak to him.

The fact that Sherman is black has nothing to do with it. The fact that Sherman is not dressed like a white collar executive has nothing to do with it.

I do think thug was the wrong work, and I think SOME of people who used the word were acting in a racist manner. I believe there are some people who use "thug" as a racial code word. There are racists out there, and there are people who make assumptions based on how someone looks.

I do civil rights law for a living, and deal with racism, sexism, and the like on a daily basis. I just think that assuming that everyone who has problems with Richard Sherman is a racist is also wrong. The fact that some people misuse thug, or any other word, does not make them a racist. NEITHER side should make knee-jerk determinations.

I don't like Michael Vick - not because he is black, or dresses in the way he does, but because he tortured dogs. I didn't like Mark Gastineau, not becase he was white, but because he acted like a jerk/punk on the field.
You know, AFAIK no one in this thread is accusing you of racism for thinking Sherman was acting like a jerk. Now, speaking for myself, I'm pointing out that in defending your own position in the way that you are, which is a totally reasonable position to take, you are also defending the racists who are parasites to your viewpoint. Maybe it's because "the racists" actually means a pretty murky gray area of basically non-racist intended folk all the way to klan propagandists, and you think some decent people are getting unfairly maligned even if they're a bit out of line? You know, the people who might be upset for reasonable reasons but care just a little more because of race but don't really know it? These are actual questions not rhetorical points.

I'm just trying to make sense of it, because it seems like you're defending yourself against charges of being racially motivated when those charges aren't being brought against you.

 I love stuff like that.

This is a good article from Grantland on the matter.

This comment on the article was really good too (bold mine):

The worst part about this hullabaloo is now the sideline interviews will go back to being a bland talk filled with boring talking points drilled into the players by coaches. I was watching a brutal sport for entertainment then was thrilled when one of the players added to the entertainment during a time when I usually turn off the TV. And now we are stuck hashing out the unwritten rules of trash talk (my notes, so far, have no comparing wives to cheerios, no comparing someone to cancer...essentially, no saying what KG says, and now, no harsh, but clean, trash talk during sideline interviews) and having a race debate. I just want to go back to the moment when Sherman said what he said because that moment was fun, pure fun, and it wasn't weighted with the baggage of people's uptight and/or racist reactions. Boo on you, America, because you are pushing us further into the land of the boring athlete.

So sad, really. Andre Rison, now there was a man who knew up to celebrate in style.

I personally liked Robert Ayers(#91) poking fun at Rivers:

I still think there has to have been more to the story than what Sherman says there is. Somehow I doubt Sherman didn't help instigate this throughout the game and before it, namely the Arizona charity event where he claims Crabtree tried to fight him. I can actually understand the emotion getting him on the field like that but the press conference after is what really bothered me.

Personally I thought he was being douchey which is his m.o., but I don't understand how that's "thuggish". A thug is someone who attacks and robs you, someone who commits a crime. For that matter I don't really recall athletes in general being called "thuggish" which is what really took me aback about that.

Ya, doesn't matter. Actions speak louder than words? He was flagged for taunting, fined, and apologized for his actions. He was out of line. Don't worry, it wont' make you racist to admit it.
Actions do speak louder than words, and the league's decision to flag him and fine him for something like this demonstrates just how incredibly stupid the league is.

KEY AND PEELE!!!

I love Lance Moore and want to keep him on the team forever

Most legit NFL touchdown celebrations are flagged now. Except, apparently, Victor Cruz's salsa dance, because reasons.

I remember back when this (excellent bball player) was supposed to be on the wild/loudmouth etc side of things. Today he would seem like a boyscout, despite the level of those other athletes being vastly below his :/

'See you back in Phoenix!". Although, unfortunately, they lost those finals anyway.

I think a more relevant person to bring up wrt basketball and race would be, uh, Allen Iverson. Or, equally illustrative from the other angle, Andrew Bogut. (Warning: language.)

Are you kidding me? Ever heard of Dennis Rodman? Or Gary Payton? Or the entire Detroit Pistons? Or would that get in your way of "praise le 90s, when people were better"? Who exactly would he "seem like a boyscout [sic]" compared to, in today's NBA?

Uh, Rodman was pretty much used only to take rebounds. He had an average of what, <5 points per game? So he is not much of a model athlete anyway, unlike Barklay or other 90s stars ;)
