That's what I started thinking, but I can't think of three words with five I's that answer the riddle, just like I can't think of three words describing something(s) that have five eyes that answer the riddle. And I've been thinking for quite a while. Looks like I don't have to know the answer anyway, though. (But I'm still curious.)

First they choose one person to be "captain"

Then the other people (non-captains) follow these rules:
* If this is their first time to the room AND switch B is "off", Turn switch B "on"
* If this is their first time to the room AND switch B is "on", Toggle switch A
* If this is not their first time AND they have not turned switch B "on" before AND switch B is "off", turn switch B "on"
* If this is not their first time AND they have turned switch B "on" before, Toggle switch A

The captain follows these rules:
* If switch B is "off", Toggle switch A
* If switch B is "on", Turn switch B "off"
* When the captain has turned switch B "off" 28 times (or the total number of prisoners minus one), he declares everyone has been in the room.

Essentially what is happening is switch B is showing if a person has been in the room and not yet been counted. The captain then counts the number of times the switch is set. And since none of the prisoners will toggle switch B more than once, the captain gets an accurate count of the minimum number of unique prisoners that could have possibly been in the room except him (thus the minus one for when to declare).

this is almost correct, but each person must flip swich "A" up twice, and the leader wait until the swich has been fliped 56 times. this will alow the posibility of of swich "a" is on at the start.

A man weighing 180 lbs. carrying 3 bowling balls weighing 10 lbs. each, approaches a large ravine. The only way to cross is a bridge with a weight limit of 200 lbs. The ravine is to far to throw or roll the balls across. How can the man cross the ravine in only one trip, with all 3 bowling balls?

He juggles them. I used to work in a bowling center, and I bowled for the first twenty years of my life. I would not want to juggle 10lb bowling balls. They're heavier than they look!

One thing about the second one, that kinda just popped into my head. If he's trying to juggle them, then wouldn't the downward force exerted by the balls when he catches them cause the downward force on the bridge to be more than 200 lbs?

Dunno, haven't taken physics yet, that's why I'm asking .

Perhaps if the balls were hitting the bridge, with no cusion, this would be a factor, but as he's juggling, he would grab the ball in the air, and slow it down, not stop it. I don't know if you can juggle, or have ever tried to catch a bowling ball (we used to toss 6lb balls around when putting them away) but you don't catch one like a baseball. . . .

I get what you're saying. Still kinda hard to slow down a 10 lb bowling ball while handling two others . But still... doesn't seem quite right to me. Ahh well, moving on, looking for a couple new riddles.
