Riots in St. Louis

Really?

How about a quick rundown on how you would go about filing a lawsuit against McDonald's without hiring an attorney? Bear in mind that McDonald's legal department has an annual budget running in eight figures.

So, do you think your self help legal program has a snowball's chance in Hades, or are you just too lazy to make that work out?

A quick Google search will yield countless results: http://www.wikihow.com/File-a-Lawsuit

Also, once the health department conducts their investigation, there will be even more evidence to help your case in court.

At risk of being called a fool, during my days running my own business I at times filed against deadbeat customers in small claims court, without even having the benefit of help from the internet. I did okay. I rat my chances against the legal department of McDonald's Corp at 0.0001 degrees Kelvin. Against the city attorney's office of Ferguson Missouri I'd say that heats up to maybe 0.001.

To suggest that 'the protesters are just to lazy too avail themselves of the legal system is so far out in the dark that it isn't even funny.

Did family or friends of Mike Brown even try getting to the truth (let alone filing a lawsuit) before a bunch of people who didn't even know Mike Brown decided to protest, loot and burn down buildings?

The truth is that the people of Ferguson do not trust their police department to police themselves, or the local justice system as a whole.

Who said anything about representing themselves? You can do so, but you could also get a lawyer (oftentimes for free).
Since a case of a protester against the police department would likely get tossed on either standing or immunity grounds, it would be silly for an attorney to take up the lawsuit (for a contingency - which is different than free) and it would be a much more frivolous act than peaceful protest.
If they take it on percentage.
That is different than free.

There is a term for cases that attorneys are willing to take on contingency: rock solid winners. Taking on the city police, represented by the city attorney, in the city court, seldom qualifies.

I would never take a case on contingency against a governmental agency. Way too much risk to running a profitable law practice.

Look, I'm not an unreasonable man, it is harder for poor people to hire good lawyers than it is for the middle and upper classes.

No, it's harder for the middle class to hire good lawyers than the upper class. Poor people actually cannot hire lawyers, hence the 'if you cannot afford one' business providing for their (haphazardly performed) defense in criminal cases. That's the breaks.
