Rise and fall of the roman empire

Where is our once strong navy?

Ahhh... Yes... About that. I was SURE I mention that, but it seemed to have slipped my mind... :hmm:

You see. What happend there was a prissy little queen named Cleopatra had this navy. This navy happend to be 3 times larger than our navy. A certain Consul thought it best to try and sink this prissy queen's navy by all means possible. I attack her ships, and she attack my ships. One thing led to another and all of a sudden we had no ships left. Funny that eh? :D

I wonder if there is a (better) tool to transform it into a scenario (biq). I've seen this function with civ3multitools (the SaveGame Modifier exe has a tab called "scenario export" but it didn't seem to work-or I wasn't able to use it anyway).

My version of c3MT says it has a few errors and seems to fail to update itself to a newre version but I was able to edit savs with it nonetheless but never export them in biq format. Perhaps some of you have a newer version

I have C3MT but have not used that particular function yet. If I have time later i'll give it a go. If we could get it into debug we would see exactly what takes the comp. most time to do.

For me the frame just freezed a second after the Dacians requested that I withdrew from their territory. Twice I waited more than 20 minutes and nothing happened (the frame was the same) so I deduced the game had crashed. Next time I'll wait 40 before jumping to conclusions .

IMHO that would happen on a debug game too since it's not the actual move of the units that takes time. Who knows? Might be best to give it a try though.

Either after 74 BC or 72 BC (waiting 40 min for next turn makes you dizzy and forget stuff) Persia declares war!!!!!!

We had trade agreements so it was kind of a backstabbing from their side.
I had moved most of our troops towards Dacian borders.
I think that us being at war with both Gallia and Galatia and being in civil war proved to be too much of a tempting target for them.
They conquered Edessa and hordes (30+) of troops are storming our eastern borders.

One superunit, Bellator Mesopotamia stormed a legion on hills in fort, across rivers. Legion won but I hope that Perisa havent got too much of those 10/5/2 with 7 hp.

Our war against Galatia continues, we capture Dorylaeum.

I immediately order troops from Dacian borders back to the eastern front.

72 or 70 BC We are gangraped by Germania!!!!
They attack a northern outpost and kill a praetorium.

1 legion killed on eastern front when persian HORDES advance on Antiochian area.
We have 3 armies in area and make LIMITED counterattacks

We capture last Galatian city (Melitene) and wipe out their puny civilization at the cost of a velite

On western front our troops advance on a Gaul city.

We are at war with Dacia, since i could not postpone the attack any more.

Our forces make a twopronged attack from east and south.

DIRE TIMES!!!

Suggestions: If we continue this game ( I will attach two saves here, one after war with Persia, Germania and Dacia and one when we are not at war with Persia and Germania but will probably be gangraped by them anyway cause we are at civil war)

I we continue: Finish the gaelic war in France ASAP (take that city though) and use those troops to reinforce northern borders.

Finish Dacia as fast as possible and use our ships to ferry those troops back to minor asia to help fight off the persians. We have VERY POWERFUL troops in Dacia even after I removed troops back to Antioch so a swift conquest of Dacia should be possible. Just walk pass those falxmen in fortresses.

Use our troops in Antioch area in DELAYING war (we have three armies after all) until our troops are back from Dacia. Be careful! Dont let the armies hp drop below 10. They have many war elephants that will eat our armies for breakfast if they are too weak.

It will be tough but it can be done, not many turns until civil war is finished.

Try to finish all set production (use the whip if you have too) so that the rest of our cities can build civitas without wasting their current shield-pool
I mean dont let a city with 55/100 build civtas, better finish current project and then build civitas. We need to be finished until next tech arrives.

Due to lack of time I will have to let next consul continue.

Even after i zipped the save its larger than 500 kb. Shall i email it to someone?

Perhaps someone else wishes to go next. If so, please do. It's a while since Pink had a go. If noone steps up, I'll take a shot tomorrow. It would be nice if Traianus took the Dacians, afterall!
And we were complaining about it being too easy!!

ok send me a pm with your email and I will give you the save.

Finally some action !!!! I hate to tell you I told you so... Those Persians needed to be dealt with a long time ago . Dacia could have waited since they are not the strongest opponent and are less aggresive. Nonetheless, more fun this way :ar15:.

Germania usually backstabs. I got ROP raped by them when on my way to Dacia in my game! Luckily they failed. My suggestion would be to fortify whatever armies we have and not let them attack any city. Surround their horses so they can't withdraw and attack with the legios. This will cause(hopefully) many servs and quite a few elite legios and spare our ever decreasing velites.

Good luck, Traianus. I hope that at least the game will go faster after the Dacians lose.

Pink, those falxmen on fortresses really do nothing except slowing the game. When you capture Byzantium for example one of them lands right in your teritorry and since they are so (unhistorically!) peacefull they'll withdraw upon request. There are plenty of ways you can bypass them so they're really just for landscaping :D. I wonder what would happen if you let them move but gave them no attack -kidding- what would the AI do with them though? Maibe slow up even more the game.

I forgot how dangerous it is to be in state of civil war. The AI loves to declare war when you are in anarchy.

Luckily I left some denfense in the eastern provinces since the Persians looked dangerous.

Traianus; Be careful not to attack INTO GERMANIC TERRITORY, because that will activate their pact of mutual protection with the Scyths.

Save sent to Traianus. (it was 600 kb)

Wow! Things are starting to really heat up in the SG now. Heh. Considering what Drendor left for Traianus, captain_beaver shouldn't feel all that bad for what he left me. :D Compared to this, my multiple fronts was a walk in the park and eating cake too. I do wish it was my turn, as it sounds extremely interesting and challenging (as if the game lack in challenge!). Definitely will speak volumes for Traianus playing skill if he beats back the barbarian masses (which I have no doubt he will).

I agree with Drendor that you should keep the war with Dacia going until they are ground into the dust, unless you start having to many casualties in the east. I would like to see as many cities of the Germans taken before we force them to declare a ceasefire. As we should start building our fortresses now for our limes in the future.

As Drendor stated the war with Gallia should be ended soon as possible, to reinforce the German lines. I would like to see the forces of Dacia attack the Germans but that isn't feasible at this time, as it seems the Persians are the bigger threat. Their are any Miles Alarias Celticus still around, have them upgrade to Eques to reinforce the German lines, delaying tactics are to be used.

I would say Drendor that you did a superb job at keeping things most interesting and the next Consul on the tips of their toes!

Now, this is becoming interesting
I do not wish playing these turns for I will doom Rome for sure! As soon as the situation is settled a bit, I can take over 10 turns. Weekend time is always best for me to play. And if Rome burn instead, by the combined Scythians and Germanics hordes, well, we will still have Africa ;)

hello everyone. ive got my internet connection back. i checked the recent save and lots has happend.. anyways, i'll wait till my turn. take care and give the dacians and persians a good beating tranius

Hehe thx Gaias!

I try my best to make sure our scenario is not to easy. :D

The persian declaration was a bit of surprise. But looking at it afterwards maybe it wasnt that strange. We were at war with Galatia when I started.
Our troops stood outside Gergovia so a declaration of war on Gaul was obvious.

Maybe I should have waited with going into civil war before the war with Galatia and Gaul was over?

Being in war with 2 nations (no matter how small they are) at the same time as you are in civil war seems to cause a high risk of declaration of war from the rest of the AI players.

Why did I declare war on Dacia in this exposed situation? Well, I thought that the situation was so bad (with Germania and Persia at the same time) that it could not get any worse with being in war with another nation.
And main reason: Our troops outside Dacia were in very good positions and very strong. Redeploying them elsewhere and then moving them back again would take alot of time. By shipping them from Balkan to minor asia they can also be back on persian front quite fast and we should start doing that as soon as we notice that the Dacian resistance gets weak

I also wanted to be the consul who initiated the offensive against the Dacian dogs! :crazyeye:

Those poor Dacians have the aggresiveness set to the second lowest grade . This, and their few offensive units, however unhistorical (they tricked the Romans into paying them tribute while still raiding their borders every winter as the Danube froze), prevents a premature war with them before Rome deals with all her enemies (on a hard level map war on five fronts would be more than devastating, I'm sure, so any player would have second thoughts about huntin' Dacian hymeres before properly dealing with the evergrowing Persian and German threat :P).

This is actually a strike of genius, unless some people really want that Transylvanian :gold: sooner . To be fair, Drendor, once all troops have been amassed at their borders, I'd have declared too but one can't help teasing you a bit. Hope you don't mind ;). And hope they're not around to screw up the game in a couple of turns.

So, Pink, I think their aggresiveness is ok but I was wondering weather this came as a gameplay option or simply by chance? I'd give the Falxman HN to simulate their raids and better def before 100 AD. Also when dealing with other barbs we should take aggresiveness into consideration (it's strange how come Cleopatra backstabed us while she was the least aggresive of them all...).

Oh, and while scrolling down through the biq I noticed that the Britons can build cities but don't have an updated City list!! Who wants them to found Kyoto?

Has anyone tried to make a biq from the last sav? Does it work?

Just the first two turns tonight and cause for some quiet optimism. BTW, turn times for me are floating at around 10 min.
Consul Publius Traianus Nero
When facing foes on many fronts, strategy dictates a war of appeasement. To shorten one's border is to strengthen one's border. To this end our plan should be the following;
We will take the Gallic city of Lutetia. The Parisii are stout warriors but they are not Roman warriors. Peace will immediately be sought at whatever price or advantage might be offered. This will be the first shortening of our border.
With the Gallic front secure, the forces there will advance northeast to the Germanic front. Given an even spread of adversaries throughout the disputed areas of the world, the Germanic campaign should be easiest due to the fact that we share such a small border. That said, those barbarians should never be underestimated and the city of Savaria is to be considered non-expendable and will be defended at all costs. The maintenance of our land frontier of the northern Mare Nostrum cannot be over-iterated. The loss of Savaria would be, in my humble consular opinion, a too serious risk to this concept.
The Dacian war is a just war. These backward, farmhand warriors should have expected their almost daily incusions to be repaid at some stage. That stage is now. What follows is their own fault and the name 'Traianus' will forvever be conterminous with the downfall of King Decebalus.
And so we come to the most serious threat ever to face the Roman Republic, the Persians. This is the real challenge to this consul and my treatment of this wound may not appeal to all. Our border with them is immensely long and they appear to have ample troops to threaten us on all parts of it. So I say again, we should shorten this border. I propose we move all troops away from the Armenian cities and south to the Syrian and Ptolemic territories. We will leave no more than a token defence in Pontic Asia. I say, 'Let them worry about Van and Amida and Tigranocerta. we will worry about Palmyra and Damascus and Babylon.'Thus, we shorten and strengthen our Persian border. Let them break like water upon our walls!
And so;
68BC
Our losses are considerable during the enemies' attack phase, although no legions are lost. Noteable is the loss of 4 units of ballistae which were defended only by a sole contingent of velites. Neither I nor the previous consul had noticed this weakness in our lines.
Lutetia is taken easily and the Gauls agree to peace. They give us their entire treasury of 8 gold and a further 2gpt. we now move forces towards the Germanic border.
Our forces advance without much resistance towards Naissus and Oescus.
Near Savaria our legions form a defensive lines around the city. The Germans have penetrated our border here but look hesitant to advance further.
Near Damascus we begin a strategy of baiting the enemy, first in one direction, then in another.
66BC
The Germanic forces withdraw. Still we are guarded. We are leaving a substantial force near our eastern Gallic front.
In Dacian lands we buldose the defenders and take Naissus and Oescus.
Again we slaughter many waves of partian horse archers around Damascus but the number of enemies here is truely awesome. Our armies are, so far, performing well in their shielding role while units of slingers and ballistae cause many enemy deaths.

Good show!

Damn I feel guilty about those 4 ballistae. Where did it happen and how?

Are you planning to march into Germania? Remember they have MoP with Scythia.

Keep up the good work!

4 ballistae.....counts.. 100 shields * 4 gaah!:wallbash:
feels guilty again....

exactly! It was on the tile northwest of Byzantium - the one with the fortification. I should have spotted it too but no matter. it's not that front which is presenting the problem.
I'm not planning an ovensive into Germania. I don't think it will be worth it to risk war on yet another front for the sake of 1 or 2 cities which might be better taken as part of a planned assault. Do they have mutual protection due to a deal or are they locked allies? It does make a bit of a difference.
More tmrw, Guys!

Wow, war on all side:eek: ! Good luck Traianus in dealing with this and remember, if we can't beat Persia in Syria or Palestine, we can always amass our army in Armenia and go down until Ctesiphon, as Heraclius did:lol: . But he was lucky....
