rhialto:
Where do you see a Steam Cruiser? Do you mean the Iron Frigate?

And, btw, your reasoning is completely wrong ;)
The English terms are a bit misleading here, in fact the German classifications fit better.
Cruisers took the job of the Frigate in the Age of Sail: Recon, and remote smaller missions (quite important in the Age of Imperialism)
Battleships were the mainstay of the fleet, intended to fight other Battleships. We're talking about pre-Dreadnaugts here. In German, those ships are called 'Linienschiff' (Ship-of-the-Line).
With the arrival of the Dreadnought, the classical roles changed - Dreadnoughts ('Schlachtschiff'/Battleship in German) were too fast and had too much firepower to allow the use of the small Cruisers in Sea Battles any longer; this lead to the development of Battlecruiser ('Schlachtkreuzer'), matching the Dreadnoughts in size and firepower, but trading less armament for higher speed.

Those ships that carried torpedoes originally were called 'Torpedoboats' (later used again for small high-speed vessels) including WW1. The lack of any ships with a comparable speed AND enough firepower to sink those lead to a new class of ships - 'Torpedoboat-Destroyers' (Torpedobootzerstörer). And since those large Torpedoboats were equally fast, they were soon equipped with torpedoes as well...and during WW2 at latest, Torpedoboats vanished (Germany still had them, but their Torpedoboats were easily as big as many Destroyers from other navys, just smaller and less versatile thán the German Destroyers).

And AFAIK there was not a single Battleship ever not steam-powered :) (Nuclear? Diesel?).
If you mean piston-engines, the 'Dreadnought' was the first one without.
I do not really like to differentiate between 'Dreadnoughts' and 'Battleships' - in fact, both are the same. The HMS Dreadnought was the first real Battleship. But since 'Pre-Dreadnought' sounds a bit silly for a unit, and the English language lacks a proper name for those ships, oh well ;)

Thanks for your answer and welcome.

By removing the Man-O-War I meant it has different stats than the Ship of the Line (16.12.6 instead of 12.10.7) and it seems unfair to me.

I've seen some good graphics over here for many ships, but that would be a job to search for them :) actually it's not much important.

rhialto the steam cruiser I was thinking is something like the american Maine or Olympia, many Navys has this kind of ship.

Don't have RaR in this moment but my personal best paths would be something like:

- frigate - iron frigate - destroyer - miss destroyer
- SoL - heavy frigate - steam cruiser - cruiser - mod cruiser
ironclad - dreadnought - battleship

I was replying to Aerosp, who wanted a steam cruiser unit.

When I said steam power, I really meant coal-fueled, as apparently did he when he noted that coal would be required to build this steam cruiser unit. For pedants, diesel and nuclear fueled ships can also be called steam powered, but common use is for steam power to mean coal fueled.

Slightly off-topic: I think when civ4 comes out, it should have some way of reflecting the serious fuel/range limitations of coal-fueled ships.

The olympia looks like a typical example of one of the iron frigate or ironclad clsses of ship.

Note that ironclad does NOT imply no sails. It simply describes the armour used, specifically a wooden hull reinforced with an iron shell. The monitor class was actually somewhat before its time in not having sails.

I love this MOD. It's really like getting a whole new game, totally reinvigorated the CivFanatic in me.

I'm deep into my first game, and I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this issue. On a large map, I realized that I didn't have any coal when it came time to build railroads. So I searched the whole map with no luck. I thought there was a glitch, but then lo and behold, there was one coal in Egypt on the other side of the world. ONE, in the whole world. I guess we're all playing without railroads this game.

Anybody else find strange things like this? Seems like it's about to ruin a perfectly good civ game, and I don't have time to play very often, so it's really disappointing.

The only thing I can think of is that lots of cities are built on the coal

Conquests is known for less ressources than previous versions though ;)

IF I WANTED TO WAIT IN LINE I'D USE WINMX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why dont you upload this here or somewhere else that doesn't have a wait time. What's even worse is that the damn site doesn't even let me use getright, I have dialup.

 Cube4

I downloaded it before there were any waits, but I just the line at the link hosted by civfanatics is four minutes.

I know this is really nit-picky: Ashigaru Pikeman vs. Barbarian Rider with pike to the NW of the rider - it appears the pikeman is attempting to geld the rider's horse since the pike thrusts under the horse. While this would probably make a horse throw his rider, I doubt this is the combat goal.

Well five minutes doesn't really bother me that much what really pisses me off is that it doesn't allow me to use get right, and it doesn't resume if my connection messes up, and the fact that I have to wait. I tried to see if it resumes by stopping the download at about one meg, and downloading again, and It had to start over. If they allowed resuming with the server, I would download it.

It's currently going to take me about 8 or 9 hours to download this. So I'm probably gonna have to pull an allnighter to get this and hope that I don't get disconnected.

Also why isn't this up at CDGroups? I remember that DyP was up there, but I went there today and RaR wasn't there. Why?

I noticed the normal pikemen graphics not being used. Please use most if not all the standard graphics for their respective units because usually they are superior.

Now, that's not fair. There are good and decent artwork in the mods. Just becuase they weren't paid for it doesn't mean it's not good. ;)

There is good and decent artwork and then there's artwork that is nice if there's truly no alternative... It doesn't change the fact that the pikeman and halberdier graphic are the same user made pikeman while the, in my entirely unhumble oppinion, firaxis unit is far better, and should at least replace the halberdier (that pike looks more like a halberd than the other one, plus his armor is more advanced thus suited for the later halberd tech.. oh hell I'm using the same word to describe 2 different things, I hope you understood)

No, I understand. But it's how you go about doing things....

"Hey, guys. Great mod! But I'm curious about the Pikeman animations...."

"I noticed the normal pikemen graphics not being used. Please use most if not all the standard graphics for their respective units because usually they are superior."

Which one would you respond to better? Yes, both may be accurate, but generally when offering criticism it's better to use a soft edge instead of ripping right to the meat of it.

People have a tendency to skim. Best make things clear. However if my tone really is that harsh looking (written words don't carry the tones with them) I guess you might be right.

That's exactly the problem. You may not mean anything by it. It may be completely innocent. You could, in fact, mean something else entirely. But in this written medium, tone and body language isn't conveyed. So it's difficult to know exactly what the writer is trying to say.

Fortunately, places such as this allow for discussion before flaming. Well, usually. ;)

It's all good. I know you're simply expressing your opinion of how the mod should be. Believe me, I question a lot of it myself. All I'm suggesting is that in order for your suggestion to be taken seriously is to be careful how you phrase it. Because you're exactly right - people skim. Better that they don't skim over yours, no? ;)

@ rare ressources

A conquest "problem", not a special thing in RAR.As Dease said, there might be coal under cities (which is btw not bad idea to build on it - could no be pillaged, could not deplete and a nice shield output on the city tile). But sometimes maps have really a lacking ressource.Only solution: play big maps with a lot of land (the map generator is here less likely to produce such odd results).Or of course increase coal frequence in the editor.

@ original animations

I agree a lot of those graphics are good and aren't used in the mod (for example trebuchet or the machinegunner), even if there is only a placeholder for it.This will change with the graphic update.
In case there is a new user made unit, it is of course more difficult. Some people might find the standard graphic better, some the user created.I tend to agree to the latter (especially if it comes to improvements, wonders, and tech icons); however I noticed the animations of the created units are sometimes not so "smooth", for example the crusader dies very slow and the combat animation of the pikemen/hellebardier is a bit odd, IMHO.In this case I would prefer the original pikemen, too.Or, even better, why don't include the good looking Swiss Mercenary? Since the Netherlands aren't in RaR and probably will never made it in, it is unused and could be used (perhaps as European flavour for pikemen/hellebardier - a lot of European countries use them in the MA in real history).

could not deplete
 Of course it can. Since my only source of Saltpeter (on the 1-tile Orkney's) depleted in a game on Kal-el's 180x180 map, I know for sure. ;)

Cannot imagine a better Halbedier animation than the Swiss Mercennary. And I fully agree, the RaR/DyP Pikeman is one of the ugliest animation we have (sorry to the designer!). The original Pike wasn't included to avoid confusion with the Crossbow, who is based on the Firaxis Pike.
