Rise of Rome

Screenshot Disclaimer:
For those of you that are very observant, I forgot to take screenshots before I declared war. The 2 of Rome were the turn I DoW. The 2 of Russia were after I had already took 2 cities. FYI, several of the ones in the upcoming chapters were taken the same turn.
I should have the next update here either tomarrow, or sometime late next week.

Part 5
The War On Russia

Chapter XVII
The Surprise Attack

_ In the year 1780, the Roman Navy reached the maritime Russian border. At that time, the Roman ambassador to Mali began attempting to bribe the Malinese armed forces to attack western Russia. The Riflemen began to debark from their Galleons near the city of Novgorod. In the meanwhile, the Frigates, which had been sent to protect the weak Galleons, began to bombard the fortifications of the city. Between the Frigates and the slightly outdated Trebuchets, the cities defenses were quickly depleted. The new Rifling technology proved even more effective in battle than ever expected. The city was quickly captured with few Roman losses, as stated in The “Roman War.”
_ Back in the suburbs of Rome, an aspiring poet, with the pen name of Rembrandt, heard about the battle, and wrote a poem about it. It caught the attention of his town’s mayor, who in turn reported him to the higher Roman officials as a great artist. They decided to publish his works. The result was an increase in national pride, and people working even harder to insure the stability of the Roman economy, and prosperity of the nation as a whole. It was Rome’s first Golden Age.
_ In 1810, the Army left Novgorod for St. Petersburg, Russia’s second oldest city. They left with the promise by the time they captured the city, a major new weapon would have been developed, which would bring the incredibly low casualty rate even lower. The soldiers’ minds swam in wonder over what this amazing new weapon could be. They wondered if the Macemen felt the same way before the invention of the Rifle, or even the ancient Warriors when they were told about the sword.
_ Back on the Romana (what the Romans called their own continent), the scientist were actually ahead on their research. Their latest development, Steam Power, had allowed the construction of Levees, which improved the output of all riverside land. The next project was steel, and would allow for the upgrade of the R. A. F’s outdated siege weapon of choice, the Trebuchet. The new “cannons” would use a barrel made of steel to hurl a heavy metal ball using gunpowder. This would be able to easily obliterate any pathetic defenses the Russians could even think about. Their victory was only a matter of time.

Chapter XVIII
To Moscow!

_ In 1820, the new weapon that had the soldiers in wonderment was completed, and began being mass produced. The troops had been given the promise that after the capture of the city, their siege battalions would be totally reequipped. With that promise, the city was captured after only a few days fighting. Once the city was secured, the new cannons were almost immediately started being shipped to the city. It was expensive, but the Romans had been cutting back on research and saving money in their treasury for quite a long time. With the Army’s morale higher than ever, they began to heal their wounded, and introduce the newly captured city’s citizens to the far superior Roman way of life.
_ According to the Romans espionage teams, the city of Moscow was the most weekly defended city in Russia! Apparently, their cocky leader, Peter, was to arrogant to believe that Rome’s army would even reach the city. This is the origin of the widely used Roman saying, “People can always be stupider than they appear.” Moscow, being the only unconquered city in the southwestern part of Malussia, was the obvious target of the next siege, so many wondered how long it would take for the city to begin to get half-way respectable defenses. As soon as the majority of the Army was healed and had had a few days of R & R for their success, they immediately left for Moscow. Once again, a few battalions were left as garrisons in the city.
_ With the completion of the invention of Steel, the researchers moved on to another major advancement. The new technology was to be called “Railroads,” and would greatly increase the shipping capabilities of goods from the outdated, previously used roads. It was predicted to almost quintuple the speed with which something could be shipped. It would turn the one to two week journey from Rome to Madrid, two of the empire’s biggest cities, to only a day. This boggled the minds of many Romans. The only setback was the fact that knowing how to build them wouldn’t help increase the nations shipping speeds. It was still unknown how long it might take to install a complete network between all of the empires cities.
_ Another bonus of this technology was the invention of a new type of gun. This gun could shoot many times per second, but was hugely inaccurate, and was believed to be merely a hindrance in the capture of a city. Fortunately, it proved its merit as a defensive unit. When fortified in a city, in the hands of even an inexperience marksman, could simply mow down invaders. The Roman treasure, still mostly crippled from the upgrading of the Trebuchets was unable to upgrade all of the units left as garrisons in Novgorod and St. Petersburg, but decided that St. Petersburg was safe to the east, where the only city was the doomed Moscow, and to the east by Mali. On the other hand, Novgorod was completely surrounded by Russian land, and many of Russia’s few remaining great cities were either to the north, across the Vorska Sea, or to the north, in what the Russians called “Siberia.” One of the two battalions in Novgorod was equipped with these new guns, which came to be called “Machine Guns.”

Chapter XIX
Russia Falls

_ Shortly after the capture of Novgorod, and it became clear that there was no need for a strategic withdrawal, the massive fleet of Galleons had covertly left Malussia. It had been a pipe dream of many Roman generals to send a second wave of troops after the initial skirmishes. This had been voted upon at a strategy meeting, and had won a sixty-three percent majority. This meeting had taken place merely a month after the R. A. F. had left the Tri Peninsula Canal. The introduction of steel, along with that of another technology, called Military Tradition had allowed the production of more sophisticated weaponry than ever. The major new advancements were, of course, the cannon, and the less talked about Calvary, the newest mounted soldier. The Galleons had quickly reached Romana, and had began being loaded. In 1830, about the same time as the main force on the Malussian continent was leaving for Moscow, the half of the entire force of Galleons, loaded to maximum capacity, left for Malussia.
_ In 1834, the army reached the city of Moscow. After an extremely brief siege, and several minor skirmishes, the city was capture, and Peter was forced to flee to the city of Yaroslavl’. Shortly afterwards, the Galleons reached Malussia, and unloaded about half way between the Russian stronghold of Rostov, and the now Roman city of Novgorod. The reinforcements consisted of about ten canon battalions, and ten more battalions of Calvary. It was decided that this should be a large enough, and technologically superior enough force to capture Rostov, so they moved in for the kill. The attack was successful, leaving the only Russian city on Malussia. The plan was to send the uninjured Calvary to the last city, Yaroslavl’ The mobile Calvary quickly reached the city, and it fell as a tree to the ax. Peter, the cowardly Russian leader, boarded a boat, and fled to his southern most city, Orenburg. Now that the Russia no longer inhabited the “Malussian” continent, it was decided to be rename “Malome”
_ In the year 1842, a deal was made between Rome and Russia. Russia was to become a vassal to Rome, and be subject to the whims of Rome. This would also officially end the war, and also as part of the deal, Peter and the rest of his citizens were to convert to the Roman faith of Confucianism. The Romans hoped this would help heal the would between the two nations, and decrease the chances of Russia revolting; they had already aired their idiocy in the inadequate defense of Moscow.

Part 6
Peace?

Chapter XX
Conflict on Malome

_ In 1844, an new governing philosophy led to a revolution in the Roman Empire. Once the resistance to the old way was quelled, the government instituted the policies of Universal Suffrage, Free Speech, Emancipation, Free Market, and Free Religion. The new found freedom was unheard of, and had never been practiced in recorded history. The downside of this was soon made manifest. In 1856, an original vote count was close, and each recount showed a different winner. Each candidates’ supporters said that the other party had corrupted the process. In an effort to keep the country together, it was decided to follow the constitutional rules to the letter, and attempt to convince the losing party that they had lost fair and square.
_ In the new cities in Malome, the Russian culture, and way of life had been almost totally assimilated into the Roman culture, but the problem lay in the country side. The cultural influence of the city of Dejenne, formally a mid-sized border-city, was penetrating all the way to the coast, and the entire countryside around the cities. The dream of allowing people to migrate to the Maloman country side was lost. This caused quite an uproar on Romana, because many had sold their land in hopes of starting a new life on the new continent. The glittering government promises were now out of reach. Some blamed the government, and the whole Russian war. Others blamed the Malinese. Some didn’t care, and were just angry. As the urban areas of the cities became increasingly prosperous, more and more anti-Male sentiment grew. Many radicals even went as far to call for war, and just annihilate the cause of the problems, but these views were officially condemned by the government. Still, the question echoed, "Why is the government continuing to train troops?" In 1856, a general from Antium rose through the ranks, and went to Barcelona, the empires most main production city, as a Great General.
_ At the same time, in Barcelona, a great new wonder was completed. It had many setbacks in its completion, but, sixteen years after the end of the war, the Taj Mahal had been completed. It was to serve as a memorial to all the soldiers who had died in the war against Russia. More importantly though, it would serve as a mausoleum to all the unidentifiable soldiers from the war. This became a symbol of Roman pride and patriotism around the empire. It would trigger Rome’s second Golden Age.
_ With the newfound boost in commerce, the researchers had completed a new technology, which was believed to increase the production capabilities of the empire. The idea was to have a line of people working to together to complete a product. It would be called Assembly Line. The process was found to work extremely well on weapons, and was used to produce even more effect guns. The well equipped soldiers were much more powerful, and well trained. Just the plain fact that they were so well equipped was the sole reason for the soldiers training harder. The concept also was applicable to any other product, and “Factories” were soon opened in many of the largest, and most industrious cities.

Chapter XI
Eripia Claptonias

_ In 1821, a baby was born in Yaroslavl’. He was named Eripia Fascionsa Claptonias. At the age of twenty-five, he moved to the city of Rome itself. He became indefatigably interested in the complex Roman political system. He began to make a name for himself almost immediately, he announced only one day after his thirty-fifth birthday, the required age to run for public office, that he was running for the Governator of the Province of Rome. He won in a landslide, and only 4 years later, he was elected a senator. The next year, announce that he was running in the 1862 election. He won the office with a 73% victory.
_ Once elected, he encouraged ideas of extreme nationalism, glorification of the R. A. F, and a close relationship between business, commerce, and the government. This governing style became known as Fascism, after his middle name. No sooner did he announce his endorsement of these concepts, than did people oppose them. The leader of the opposition was Isorho Yamamoto. Originally, the only conflict was mild verbal jousting, but it became worse and worse. In August 1863, the conflict poured over into violence. A group of protestors in Nicaea were told to leave by the Eripia Claptonias sympathetic police force. When they refused to leave, they were threatened at gun point. One of the protestors pulled a knife, stabbing the officer in the upper thigh. Intuitively, the other police fired, and everything was total chaos from there. The country was in a total civil war by noon the next day.
_ Due to the glorification of the military Claptonias supported, the Fascist, Eripia Claptonias’ supporters, had a significant martial upper hand. The Demo-Romans, Romans who supported a democratic Rome, had one advantage. Yamamoto was the leader of their military forces. Widely considered the brightest young generals in Rome, he used his limited forces to full advantage. The Demo-Romans were never able invade any of the major cities, such as Rome, Madrid, Cumae, Constantinople, or Barcelona, but they were some of the few that Yamamoto wasn’t able to capture. Another tool Yamamoto was able to use in ways entirely new to Romans was propaganda. Though he was not able to get into the boundaries of some cities, his ideas were. Even in the most Fascist cities, there was at least a miniscule underground resistance. After over a year of fighting, the many underground forces in Rome made a plan to assassinate Claptonias. The plan was a success. With their leader gone, the Fascist forces quickly fell apart, and the war was over.
_ After the war, Yamamoto went to Barcelona, where he started training a new generation of soldiers. Merely two months later, there was a democratic election, and the government was at peace. The ways of Eripia Claptonias were soon forgotten. Unfortunately, his reign would have perpetual effects on the course of history forevermore.

So fine, I stayed up later than intended last night, and got a snow day, and finished a little earlier than I'd originally siad. Sue me.

I admit, i did take very liberal creative liscence in this chapter. Once again, Sue me. Also, 50 points to the first person to guesse where I got everyone's favorite Roman Fascist's name from.

Chapter XII
The Unbelievable Happens

_ Only a few months into the new president’s term, a shocking surprise was on the front cover of a small newspaper in Seville. Many regarded it as rumors, made up by reporters trying to stir up resentment for no reason. When a more widely read paper reported a similar story a few days later, it began to grab more and more attention. It was eventually accepted as fact when the most widely read paper in the whole empire published it a third time. Unsurprisingly, the articles acceptation as fact had tangible effects. These effects would prove to be the most important event since the fleet of Roman Galleons moved across the maritime border into Russia.
_ The original headline read Claptonias’ True Motive. It went on to explain that Eripia Claptonias had been exposed to Malinese culture in his home city of Yaroslavl’. When he moved to Rome, he was under the employment of an anti-Roman terrorist group in Mali. Officially, the Malinese government had absolutely nothing to do with this group, and condemned its actions. Strangely, there was a very large hole in Mali’s budget, and the organization seemed to have a very large amount of money that no one was able to explain. According to the writer’s belief, the organization had used this money to pay for the campaign bills, helping Claptonias to be elected. Once in power, they had used their influence over him to persuade a few of his minor decisions. They concluded in saying that in effect, Mali had provided the capital that had gotten him elected, and bribed him into setting up the fascist government.
_ There had been a small resentment towards Mali since shortly after the Russian War, due to the culture of the city of Djenne penetrating far into the western side of the Malome. In some places it even reached all the way to the coast. In public poles, anti-Malinese sentiment had more than quadrupled.
_ A few short days after that pole was taken; the newly reequipped Roman Troops slowly began moving eastward. By May of 1864, the bulk of the army was to the border with Mali. The Malinese never even saw it coming, believing that Rome was their close ally, and that the world had reached a new era of peace and understanding. They were dead wrong. On May 23, 1864, Rome formally declared war on Mali, and moved their army into Malinese lands; into the lands of the last empire left alive by Rome. That was about to change.
