Do not worry, we come in peaceful mission. After a short refreshment we will continue our journey north. As a sign of our good intentions we bring a generous present to the palace of Daimyo Hawklord!
Hopefully this will be the begin of a long and mutually beneficial trade relationship.

So it has occurred to me that we might be dealing with secret alliances. Do alliances have to be openly declared (as they would be visible for AI) or are secret alliances allowed?

I have checked the first three posts of this thread and can find nothing disallowing secret alliances. Diplomacy is stressed. Secret alliances may fall under good diplomacy. I myself have set up a secret alliance with the Ronin to take out Chamnix. But it's really hard to trust the Ronin, all they think about is money.... :eek: Don't tell Chamnix..... :please:

I would say it was all part of the diplomacy/power struggles of the day. Allegiances would swap back and forth depending on the advantages at the time.

I agree with Hawklord in fact I omitted that common rule because of several factors unique to this scenario;
1 is the fact that a few players may not get iron and they are threatened because of it but can overcome that by strategically holding an alliance that might help in that situation.
2 How you are able to reach certain levels of techknowleges may require a certain amount of give and take here and there but gets complicated if a leader requires stipulations like I'll trade it cheap if you do not trade it with others

This i certainly a Diplomatic games as much as it is an aggressive game
