RK-01 First Strike First (Warlords)

lurker's comment:
sounds like you got a plan.

hope your archers can hold up against barb axes and up until you get gunpowder... also since still at work can not see your save but, looks (from earlier pics) like brennus could just come around to the NE, preventing him from being boxed in. just my thoughts. i'll go now.

Welcome Codeman. Thanks for lurking!

Tiles above and below the 1-tile piece of land was ocean so he should be locked in unless...

...until we explore more of the map we can't be sure if that is an actual peninsula or there's some sort of diagonal land bridge he can use.

That's fast pickup and turns, Mr. Furrie...

As for Horse Archers... er, that's cavalry and it doesn't get bonuses from Protective, so no...

York looks bad. I guess we have to whip to get that archer out faster, then build a second one right after.

Since there's just two of us at the moment, we'll play 20 turns until 0-1 AD.

I'll pick up in... 16-18 hours. It's 1:30AM and I better go to sleep. Work sucks but hey it helps buy great games like Civ :lol:

Plans:
1. Hook stone and research masonry for great wall. If we lose great wall then it will be 3-4 archers per town + fog busting NW as Codeman suggested
2. Rush to Feudalism then Construction
3. 1 more city

I've been thinking about it over work...

Scratch the plan of going to Feudalism. I'm going for Machinery instead since Crossbows are more suitable for our needs.

Barbs look bad until we get long/crossbows. We really need the GW. Once masonry is up I'm build/chopping it ASAP. I think we should delay attacking anyone until GW + Crossbows.

Archers 3 vs Axemen 5 :(

Thats what happens with Raging barbs :D, Just keep pumping Archers in York as long as you can, and we should be fine.

Actually I'll build the GW in York and Archers in London, since we already deforested London :lol: plus there's a barracks in London already. You think we should promote any new archers from London immediately to Drill II? We need all the help we can get.

I also think we should hold off the third city until we have either the GW or 3-4 archers a city.

I don't have Civ now so I can't check but do we have anyone defending London?

We have an Archer in London, yeah GW in ork will be better without the forests in London.
Indeed, wait for the GW and then expand hard, it will be needed to catch up to the AI's.

Turn 0 (1930BC)
Move workers inside city.

Turn 1
More barbs south of York.
Workers move to copper to mine it. (not for axemen but for bonus)

Turn 2
York: Archer -> Monument (for the stone)
York's new Archer defeats warriors from south. Move to defend elephants.

IBT: Archers beat Warriors. Hmm... sounds suspiciously like an NBA game... except there's no team named Archers in that league.

Turn 3
York archer promote to Drill 2.
London archer moves NW to bust fog.

Turn 4
Archer NW of London fortifies on hill.

Turn 5
Brennus grabbed the spot on the land bridge. Guess we don't lock him in.
More warriors appear east of London. Move fog buster back to London.

Turn 6
York archer kills warriors.
London now size 4 and unhealthy for -1. Not a big deal.

Turn 7
London builds archer.
Start on another archer.
Workers begin hooking cows next to London.

Turn 8
Masonry in 6.
York's monument in 4.

Turn 9-10
Move York's original archer to fog bust duty northwest of stone.

Turn 11
London: archer -> archer
York: monument -> worker
London's new archer moves to fog bust duty NW of York
Our only Worker begins rebuilding the pasture E of York

Turn 13
Masonry up.
Research Meditation next (for Priesthood, hopefully we can steal the Oracle too).

Turn 14
London now size 5 and unhealthy for -1. Still not a big deal.
London: archer -> settler
Begin hooking York's new pasture

Turn 15
New London archer moves to fog busting SW of York.

Turn 16
Brennus and Monty adopt Slavery.

Turn 17
York worker beings roading to Stone.

Turn 18
Used car salesman... I mean, Roosevelt wants Open Borders. Yeah, whatever.

Turn 19
York: Worker -> Great Wall
York's new worker moves to a tree on a hill.

Turn 20
Roading to stone continues
York's new worker begins pre-chop of forest.

Got the game, will be playing in a few hours.
Where is thath settler for? :p

Played my turns, and I've got some GREAT news to tell you ;).

Pre: All looks very well in our empire, we are getting the GW, and no barbs in sight.
T2: Meditation comes in, Priesthood in 9.
T3: Yorks borders pop, stone comes in our fat cross, throw both workers on it to quarry it ASAP.
T5: London: Settler -> Archer
T6: We are 6th, and front to last after...Brennus :scan: [Target Identified: Brennus]
Kill 2 barb Archers, Upgrade archer with Drill IV.
T7: London: Archer -> Stonehenge
T8: Priesthood comes in, I select Alphabet for trading later on and gets us all those cheap early techs.
Stone connected, GW time drops to sub-10 turns.
T15: Great Wall done, Our people are happy because the bars can't enter now.
York: GW -> Barracks

T16:London finishes Stonehenge, geuss that gamble paid off quite nice!
London: Stonehenge -> Library
T22: Ed of turnset, nothing happened in between.

I played 22 turns (or 23, might have missed one), to get a somewhat even number in years.

Several pointers:
1. Barbs: There is a barbarian city to our North-West, we should capture our resettle it in near future, it's a good spot and fills up our land quite nice.
2. I wasn't able to use the settler, as brennus and the barbs took 2 intended city spots, I've fortified the settler in York, we need to discuss what to do with him.
3. Long term strategy? I suggest after getting Alphabet, get the best possible trades (don't just give Alphabet away, it's a key technology). After we get Alphabet go for construction (Catapults) and take out Brennus.
4. I gambled for Stonehenge and it paid off, maybe e should gamble on the Pyramids/Orcle too and maybe it'll pay off.

What are your thoughts on this all?

P.S.: I'm on smallband so it's all going a bit slower to add reports etc.

lurker's comment: well, with the great wall your on easy street. :) everyone you attack will have to deal with you and the barbs. :goodjob:

I smell a Brennus BBQ between now and 500 AD :D.
With cats he'll die real hard, and real fast.
btw Codeman, if you want, you can always play some turns too if you ask.

*We need a third city badly. I'd take the barb city out soon, keeping the settler, but... we'll likely need more than 2 archers per defender... OR we can settle on the horses area on the west now and then take out the barb city next.
*Nice we have the wall! :D Speaking of the Great wall, we don't need them fog busters anymore. Now we want barbs to spawn and take out the computer :lol:. I'm gonna take the scouts and send them to the barb city.
*I don't know if we actually needed the henge. :| Maybe someone's already building the oracle...
*I can't believe we are actually 6th in power. But I think archers won't cut it. It's catapult time... I've been thinking, what should we research first, crossbows or cats. Either way we'll be massing that unit soon once we have 3-4 cities.

Got it, unless Codeman decides to join and pickup, will play in... 20 hours. Sleepy time! :sleep:

EDIT: I think it's too late to go for the Oracle (we don't have marble too, which kinda hurts that strategy) so I'll just focus on building damn super expendable units to take our free city.

Sounds fine, I know Stonehenge was't very important, but London cuildn't really build anything else, and it's always ncie to spawn a GP.
And we won't get Calender for some time so culture wise it's to our advantage in our new cities.

lurker's comment: i would love to play a set. i think the variant is interesting. my spot will not be up for a couple days in the SGOTM so i currently have time. though i am at work now and have plans tonight.

that said, if the offer is still open i may pick up a set tomorrow or sunday. but you guys are doing well on your own.

as for opinion, i think cats first. and some exploring to find out were everyone else is.

Good point. I took first 8 turns now since I couldn't help it sorry Code, but if ever you decide to participate, you may continue from where I left off. :lol:
No screens coz I really must go to sleep now.

Highlights:
700BC-580BC

1. York: Barracks -> Archer
2. Move settler to horse area and settle there
3. York: Archer -> Worker
4. Workers near London finish cottages, one starts road to new town, one starts another cottage on final flood plains tile.
5. 5 former fog busters gather at barb town. We lose 2 but take it easily afterward. We now have four cities and we're handing over only -6 at 80% science.
6. OK I made a :smoke: mistake - York: Worker (incomplete) -> Archer temporarily to let York grow to size 5.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/73311/RK-01_BC-0580_.CivWarlordsSave

I'll let Codeman play a turnset now, I don't have acces to CIV IV during weekends (i'm home in the weekends from saturday morning till Sunday evening, and I don't have CIV IV at home).
Good luck on the turn Codeman, just play turns untill you reach a ncie round year.

I woke up did a few turns but I need to go to the Office, so...

OK, Codeman you are UP!

***

From turn 8 (580BC) continued...

Turn 9
We have free worker in Sakae, starts roading up the pigs.
Leave 2 archers in Sakae, move rest to York.
Road to Nottingham complete
Rome grows to size 7 and is now unhealthy and stagnant at -2

Turn 10
Sakae online, workers being pasture on pigs.

Turn 11
Move workers near London to York which needs mines.
London: Archers -> Oracle
York is now size 5, switch back to worker

Turn 12
York: Worker -> Archer
Raise science to 90% to maximize overflow from Alphabet

Turn 13
Move the warrior NW to scout Brennus' latest city

Turn 14
Alphabet -> Math (for construction and/or currency next)
We seem to be inclined to go catapults first before crossbows... anyway we don't have a barb problem anymore so why not?

Let's see the available trades...

(please see attachment)

Only Roosevelt* will trade with us due to him being +2 with us. He doesn't even have writing yet but we seem to be behind in tech with Roosy. No one wants to open the borders so Roosy is the only one we can trade with.

Guess Alphabet wasn't such a good idea after all at this stage.

We can trade Writing for any of Agri, Sailing, Polytheism. :(

As for the Oracle, I think I'll give it a shot although it IS a bit late...
Genghis Khan doesn't have Polytheism AND Mysticism
Monty and Brennus have Polytheism but not Priesthood
Only the GEEK* has Priesthood.
Well there are 2 other unmet civs out there but hey...

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/73311/RK-01_BC-0445.CivWarlordsSave

To repeat:

Roster:
1. RKai - played 14 turns
2. Furrie - weekend skip
3. Codeman - you are now UP for 20
