RK-08: Atomic Betty

It's a comin :p

I got exhausted at 2 AM. :p

Oh, and we got away with the gambit too :p So no worries.

I have an even risker plan to suggest shortly....

Here we are...so yes, we left off when we got Communism. I eyed Mao (and his 1.2k cash) and after seeing he was in HR, traded Communism for the 1.2k.

He was rather happy with Lizzie.

Several new groups have sprung up, calling themselves the Anti-Agression alliance, and they are stopping people from working. This led Lizze to instruct her scientists to persue a more rigid government form, because she thought she could then use it to build statues of presidents from a palce called America. Odd eh?

So, the notes.

Nottingham has Wall Street in 11 turns and will then do Scot Yard. ity mgiht be wise to pay to rush a factory in there sometime.

Athens got a GG, and bult a military academy, and is now building West Point. Speaking of GG's, the one I got from facism (the real reason I went there) is near Athens, looking to build a Mil Academy...I have no clue where.

The Forbidden Palace is in Munich now.

So, I would suggest kill off Alex's last two continential cites, and make peace. We can kill Alex and Fred when Marines get here. The Kremlin and the Penatagon are both 5 turns fom being done. Uppsala is awash in Engineers, please fix that after we build Mt Rushmore.

To revolt or not to revolt. The Distance cost is costing us oh...95 gold a turn. And workshops costing -1 food a tile. That said, I'd say hold off till we get at least one more engineer (to help hurry gorges dam/Scot Yard) and perhaps a prophet in York, although thats not needed.

Now for my crazy (but well thoughtout and I expect it to work easily) move. A little known fact is that The Temple of Artemis gives 100% to Trade Missions....and...well...We're on our way to invade China! However, were doing it with talk of new markets. As the Caraval and this GP type don't need open borders...So, the plan.

Build a Caraval (Done)
Put Merchant in Caraval (Done)
Get Frigate Escort and go as as close as we can get to China with it (1 turn away)
Sail to Shanghai (Not Done)
Redeem cash (Not Done)

1) Thanks

2) If Mao or anyone else with a Navy delcares war on us :p

3) No :p We're too busy staring at wonders :p

Actually, vra, I'm waiting for Frank to carry the next turnset. I played just before you... Even if it's slow, I don't like the same player doing 2 turnsets in a row.
Frank, do you have the time to take it?

Oooops, looks like I dropped the ball on this one, saying I would take it and then not taking it.

I will download and play tonight. Feel free to chime in on strategies. I'm going to go with the list I posted last week as a suggested path to follow unless someone posts an alternative that makes any sense. (the number of cities remaining to be conquered is smaller now)

1. Conquer the rest of our continent -- only 21 cities to go, meanwhile ...
2. Research Assembly Line(11), Scientific Method(5 or great scientist), Physics(11), and Arillery(9), then build a modern Army.
3. Research Railroad(10) then Combustion(10) then build a modern Navy.
4. Research Electricity(12), then Fission(15)
5. Build Manhattan Project (then start SDI right away) ...
6. Build lots of nukes before anyone else can finish SDI and launch em, then immediately ...
7. Land our invasion force and capture another 30 or so cities, some of which are on islands off the other continent.

My only comment is tactical. I'd started forting our small link with Korea...Right now, we have a massive advantage over Korea as we have infantry and they don't. My reccomendation therefore would be to reinforce our coasts then use our army now giving Hellas hell to conduct a devastating first strike. Hopefully, we can weaken them enough that they won't get infrantry in time for it to matter.

Sounds like a good plan, vra. Greece is gone now. We can go for Korea in a just a few more turns.

Inherited turn (1860 AD): I wondered why were were researching Biology. If we want to conduct an intercontinental war, we're going to need an intercontinental navy, meaning we need Combustion. We've got some beakers invested in Biology already, so I left it alone. I'll go for Combustion when it completes.

War weariness was setting in pretty good. I cranked up the culture slider to 40% to speed up production of all the infrastructure that I found being built:

The Pentagon(6) in London
West Point(12) in Athens
Wall Street(10) and Scotland Yard(21) in Nottingham
The Kremlin(5) and Mt. Rushmore(6) in Nidaros
5 Stock Exchanges and 6 Factories amoung others

Out of 31 cities, we are building exactly 1 military unit -- a Cannon. You couldn't tell from the build queues that we were at war. Not a huge problem because we had a huge force hammering the final 2 Greek cities on the continent. There was an island city off our east coast that I wanted to capture to end the "We yearn to join our Motherland" unhappiness.

I decided to leave things unchanged until we captured Argos and Mycennae and then take a look at our situation at that point.

Turn 1 (1862 AD): Uppsala constructed a Market, started an Infantry(3). Tonsburg constructed a Forge, started a Barracks(5). Lodose constructed a Library, started a Forge(10). Haithabu constructed a Forge, started a Barracks(3). Dusseldorf trained a Cannon, started a Granary(6). Munich constructed a Barracks, started an Infantry(6).

A settler founded Coventry on our east coast. The citizen there started constructing a Lighthouse. I sent our Great General to Athens to build a Military Academy. He was planned to help produce very highly trained military units when West Point was completed there.

At Argos I sacrificed 2 Cannon, then sent in some grunts and a Cavalry to capture the city. We kept it and the 221 gold.

Turn 2 (1864 AD): Birka constructed a Stock Exchange, started an Infantry. We gotta start garrisoning our core cities!

A Great Engineer was born in London. He can start a golden age, contribute 1570 :science: to the discovery of Combustion, or help us build something kewl. I put him to sleep there in London.

Ratz, our General arrived in Athens only to discover Alexander had already built a military academy there. I checked our cities. London had an academy already. Nidaros, our 2nd best hammer producer doesn't have a military academy but was going to be building Wonders for the next 9 turns and probably more after that. An academy there would be a waste. Next in order, after Athens, was Upsalla. I sent our General there. Unfortunately, he wouldn't make it in time to improve the skill of its first Infantry unit to come off the assembly line.

In Greece, we hae no Cannons available to cause collateral damage in Mycenae. I called in a Galleon who had been guarding a fishing nets outside of Canterbury to help ferry some Cannons healing across the bay there.

Turn 3 (1866 AD): Hastings constructed a Factory, started an Infantry(3). Jelling constructed a Taoist Temple, started a Jail(7). Cologne constructed a Factory, started an Infantry(5). Hamburg constucted an Observatory, started an Infantry(3).

Turn 4 (1868 AD): Uppsala trained an Infantry, started a Cannon(2). This was the start of the Haithabu constructed a Barracks, started a Cannon(9). Berlin constructed a Courthouse, started a Theatre(10).

Throughout these times, had a slew of workers building lumbermills and railroads in the forests outside our core cities. Our Great Merchant arrived in China:

I decided to extend our risk a little bit longer and have him explore this continent a while and shop around for the best deal.

Turn 5 (1870 AD): Nidaros constructed the Kremlin, started Mt. Rushmore. After pondering a few minutes, I decided it was worthwhile for our Engineer to rush its construction. We'll be able to start cranking out Infantry when it's completed out of many of our cities that are now languishing with War Weariness. It was possible we could turn down the Culture Slider and speed up our research once again, all while finishing off all of Greece's cities. While I really like building the 3 Gorges Dam, the benefit from Mt. Rushmore is needed now just to get us closer to the point where we can finish researching Electricity. It would take our Engineer 3 turns to get to Nidaros.

At Mycenae:
atomic29.jpg
:( :(

Meanwhile, the bombardment of Mycenae was complete. We lost one CR III Cannon taking the city. That leaves Alex with 1 city off our east coast. There was a Galleon there waiting to ferry units across the channel and a Frigate doing performing some preliminary bombardments.

Turn 6 (1872 AD): London completed the Pentagon, went back to work on a Confucian Academy. Hastings trained an Infantry,s tarted a Cannon(2). Birka terained an Infantry, started another(3). Roskilde constructed a Stock Exchange, started an Infantry(5). Uppsala trained a Cannon, started an Infantry(3). Tonsberg constructed a Barracks, started a Theatre(4). Hamburg trained an Infantry, started another(4). Dortmund constructed a Stock Exchange, started a Factory(23). Knossos constructed a Courthouse, started a Granary(9).

I spent about 1100 gold cash-rushing lots of Theatres, Exchanges and Factories as well as Wall Street.

Turn 7 (1874 AD): London constructed a Confucian Academy, started a Coal Plant(1). York constructed a Factory, started a an Infantry(5). Canterbury constructed a Stock Exchange, started a Factory(13). Jelling constructed a Jail, started an Islamic Temple(3). Tonsberg constructed a Theatre, started a Lighthouse(4). Losose constructed a Forge, started a Factory(19). Bjorgvin constructed a Factory,s tarted Barracks(2). Dusseldorf constructed a Granary, started a Courthouse(12). Sparta constructed a Factory,s tarted Barracks(1). Berlin constructed a Theatre, started Taoist Temple(10). Munich trained an Infantry,s tarted a Drydock(5). Stuttgart constructed a Stock Exchange, started a Forge(9). Coventry constructed a Lighthouse, started a Granary(19). Nottingham completed Wall Street, gaining us around 70 :gold:/turn at our current tax rate of 30%, and started building Scotland Yard.

Turn 8 (1876 AD): Sitguna trained a Settler, started an Infantry(1). The settler founded Warrick at the northern end of Sitguna's island. London constructed a Coal Plant, started a an Infantry(1). Hastings trained a Cannon, started a Grocer. Sigtuna trained an Infantry, started Granary(7). Cologne trained an Infantry, started a Grocer(4). Sparta constructed a Barracks, started an Infantry(5). I got a message saying Nottingham couldn't continue working on Scotland Yard. I started a Lighthouse(1) there.

Our Engineer arrived at Nidaros. There are only 4 turns remaining on Mt. Rushmore and the war is almost over, so I canceled plans to rushbuild it with the Engineer. I put him to sleep in anticipation of constructing Three Gorges Dam there.

Our first unit to reach the final Greek city, Hali(something), an Infantry was able to get 75% odds on a CGI Rifleman there so I sent him in. He survived and was reinforced by 2 Cannon.

Turn 9 (1878 AD): London trained an Infantry, started another(1). Nottingham constructed a Lighthouse, started a Factory(10). Birka trained an Infantry,s tarted Scotland Yard(9). Uppsala trained an Infantry,s tarted an Islamic Temple(1). Bjorgvin constructed a Barracks, started a Stock Exchange(6).

At the final Greek city, one of the Cannons finished off the Crossbowman and captured the city, eliminating Greece's carbon-footprint on our planet.

Turn 10 (1880 AD): London trained an Infantry, started another(1). Jelling constructed an Islamic Temple, started an Aqueduct(2). Uppsala constructed an Islamic Temple, started a Jail(2). Hamburg trained an Infantry, started a Library(2). Frankfurt constructed a Library, started a Drydock(9). Ephesus trained a Cavalry, started a Factory(14).

Combustion is due in 3 turns. I have a stack of Workers sitting on an Oil deposit, waiting for instructions to build a well there.

There is a large force assembling at Stuttgart, ready to move on Korea. A second, smaller force is gathering at Bjorgvin with the intent of taking Cheju, Wang's city in the heart of our Empire. Before declaring on Wang, I strongly recommend we train 6 more CG II Infantry to provide additional garrisons for the 6 cities on our western coast adjacent to Korea. Wang's Galleons and Frigates far outnumber ours and he'll be sure to land a huge stack of doom adjacent to one of them. I'd also hold back some Cavalry as a quick-reaction force in the west to counter his landing when it happens, and you know it will.

Our Merchant still hasn't found Mecca. The best deal he was able to garner is 1900 :gold:. If Mecca can't beat that, send him back to most any city in China to collect the 1900. Then upgrade the Redcoats in Stuttgart and go wipe out Korea.

And please please please, I must insist. Do not leave cities ungarrisoned, if simply for the happiness, if not my peace of mind. ;)

Here's The Save: Atomic_Betty_AD-1880.CivWarlordsSave Have fun!

Nice stuff here, Frank! If it wasn't by our variant, I would go for a space victory. It would be "easier" than a domination one.
Well, the next round will be a mass troop deployment while researching towards fission. Then, we will try to conquer Korea while building The Manhattan Project and nukes. And Then.... :nuke:
I will play this tomorrow night (36 hours). Worst case, Saturday morning(48 hours).

Lurker's comment

Looking forward to seeing some nukes fly and to seeing the discussion around the most optimal way to use them. Hopefully you get to them early enough that you can do some decent dmg with them though.

Very glad to see this SG running again, you guys make me want to join an SG.

Make sure you're subscribed to the SG Registration thread. There's no better way to learn this game than to dive into an SG (or 6 of 'em ... heh heh heh)

Me too! I'm still kicking myself for not switching from Biology to Combustion at the start of my last turn-set. That delayed our nukes by maybe 10 turns.

We have the largest civilization according to the book that was written during my turnset. That means we've got a good shot at being Secretary General, regardless of whether or not we build the U.N. At this point, I think we're assured of not having Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaties imposed upon us.

I forget why I went after biology...I'm sure there was a good reason, but I don't remember it atm...

Erm, I was planning to give our new Mil. Academy to our new northern "capital" to provide some faster troops when we invade Korea...oh well.

A point about Cheju, and Korea in general. Wang has troops IN OUR TERRITORY walking around. When you declare war, be very careful, as those troosp will almost cerrtainly be transported to Cheju's outskirts. If you plan it well, you can wipe the stack out in a turn or two.

Oh...Please, oh please build the Dam in London =)

Biology isn't a complete smoke by any means. Bigger cities can pump out more hammers and beakers (as long as we can deal with happiness).

Sure, the Dam could go in London and do some good there. I usually just build coal plants and skip the Dam if I'm warring. Somebody remember to wake up that Engineer in Nidaros and send him back to London.

I saw where you intended to build an Academy closer to Korea. But we have a pretty good railroad network going now so military units can be built anywhere in our empire and delivered to the front quickly (3 turns in most cases).

Forehead slapping moment: Upon reflection, building Military Academies isn't helping us at all with our current civics. A barracks gives us Level 2 units (5 experience) so the Academy doesn't gain us a promotion (7 experience). Perhaps it's better to join the Generals to get the 25% production bonus.

I understand that a single city can have multiple Military AcademiesMilitary Instructor. So, if you have a barracks (3), stable (4), west point (4), pentagon (2), civics (2+2), multiple MAsMIs (2 x ?) you can get a unit with a huge number of XPs out of the gate.

Mounted = 17 + 2 x MAsMIs
Non-Mounted = 14 + 2 x MAsMIs
