RK12 - Monarch "just win again"

That's the problem. Land area sucks. Capital is great. Bureaucracy?

I shall try a dotmap too.

Spoiler RK's Dotmap :
dotmap.jpg

Explanation: the thin green BFC are marginal sites for the future, if we have time for such before they get settled in. Red thick BFC is Athens. Yellow BFC is in case we want to make a grab for the last copper available. Which is of course, a poor site and could hurt us in the long run. All this talk of war I did, but with all the land we MAY be able to REX peacefully... we just need to keep JC happy. Thoughts?

Heh, our dotmap are largely the same. But, I actually played a few more turns before doing the dotmap :D

First of all, made some changes.

RK12-BC2750-changes.jpg

We should grow more before stagnating due to settler. Plus, with AH in, we can enjoy higher food with pasture, resulting in faster settler build actually.

So I switch to warrior first until capitol grow to 3, and switch worker to pasture pig first before chopping. Apart from actually resulting in less turns for settler out, we also can work on the 2 commerce oasis. Anyway, end of turnset, the settler is out. So, we have deice where to settle.

I see two alternatives, one of which hurts more than the other...
A. I would settle for the (your red dot) gold site and try for the (yellow) horse site next
B. Land grab at the cost of maintenance: Yellow then red.

I like the red site better than the "warrior" site because it has tiles in its workable area from the get-go.

Well we may find out soon if we do have iron, option A could be the best in the long run...

Oooh, I've been bumped!

However I'm still running 3.17 (though not for much longer I suspect) so can't actually load these new-fangled 3.19 saves.

That's okay. I'll put ye on autoskip until SGOTM is done?

Now I'll head off to sleep, and hopefully it will be my turn when I wake up. :D
*cue lullaby music*

Turn 61 - 2475BC
Athens: Settler -> Worker
Active worker goes farming the corn.

Turn 63 - 2425BC
Sparta founded on red site on the last dotmap.
Sparta: -> Warrior
civ4screenshot0000w.jpg

Turn 67 - 2325 BC
IBT: Scout kills Lion

Turn 70 - 2300 BC
Athens: Worker -> Warrior
(Let's size 4 or something before next settler)
IBT: Scout slain by Lion
Don't you animals ever have any mercy on a poor hurt guy?

Turn 72 - 2250 BC
Meet Sitting Bull (SB). SB's workboat comes in peace.
civ4screenshot0002.jpg

Makes me think JC is our only neighbor to the east, but I can't be sure until Writing is invented by JC. Maybe there are more, but borders are just closed.
I micro Athens a bit so that the warrior is finished when Athens hits size 4.

Turn 75 - 2125 BC
Athens and Sparta grow in population.
Athens: Warrior -> Settler
Gold is hooked up, we have +1 :) at Sparta.
Sending one of our workers back home to chop wood.

-----

TURNSET END!
As I step down from power, I would advise my successor to:
1. Build farms at Sparta.
2. Chop forest for settler.
3. Send one warrior to fogbust south. (Maybe, but it could be better to have 2 warriors at home.)

Iron Working is due in 4, let's see if we have it, settle there (depending on location). If we do, then cool! Get the Wheel immediately.
If we don't, we might be better off rushing to settle the horse site. (Yellow dot on Greyfox's map.)

civ4screenshot0003.jpg

Difficult to tell without loading save but I'm wondering whether it would be better to put horse city between horse and sheep. One of the really annoying things that happens to me is that I settle a city with resource in second ring, an AI comes along and settles a city one tile from the resource and pinches it: result, no resource but close border diplo penalties.
If you did that then there's a nice coastal location catching 2 fishes which is pretty good for running some specialists for GP production.

Ok, here goes

Turn 1/76 - Workers are building farm at Sparta and chopping for that Settler. Warrior gone to fog bust south as suggested.

Turn 4/80 - We've got trouble from 2 barb warriors coming up from the south, luckily we have some defense there. And IW is in.
scaled.php

We've got 2 sources of iron just outside our cultural borders. 2 options for a new city.

Switched research to The Wheel.

Turn 5/80 - Our warrior attacked on the hill between gold and iron, successfully fends off the barbs. Other barb warrior disappears back into the fog.

Turn 6/81 - Our barb warrior friend is back, gotta go meet him with our fogbuster. WK has also sent an archer to explore down our way, he's lurking just outside our northern border.

Turn 8/83 - Settler nearly done, building a mine for Athens. Conflict imminent between barb warrior and our southern fogbuster.

Turn 9/84 - Bad news, our warrior (1.7/2 health) got killed on the hill.

Turn 10/85 - Sparta finishes a warrior. Settler done, Athens now working on another warrior. Will be sending settler to the southern iron site because the other one is in the middle of the desert and provides a pretty poor site for a city. Also moving Sparta's just completed warrior to Athens for defense. Building a worker in Sparta.

Turn 11/86 - The Wheel is in. Will try to get that iron linked up as quickly as possible. It will probably be a few turns so I'm researching archery in the meantime because I'm worred about defense. Barbs are starting to sniff around our borders, that warrior is still down south but I've no way to dispose of him atm.

Turn 12/87 - Decided to found Corinth inland, not on the coast, so that we can immediately get access to iron. Corn will be in the BFC.

scaled.php

Turn 14/89 - That barb warrior is still circling around down there, not deciding to attack. Sent a worker from Athens to mine that iron. Only thing keeping Athens happy right now is the warrior stationed there.

Turn 15/90 - Worker on the way to Corinth to get iron, still farming Sparta but should probably switch to chopping so as to get that worker finished off. 1 Turn away from archery and 2 turns from a warrior in Athens. Here's our world:
scaled.php

Ok, so here's what I'm thinking. I still like that horse city position as a potential city, but we'd have to move quickly to get it. There is also another source of horses down south, I hadn't noticed it before but it's there. Caesar will also likely have access to iron unless we make a very bold and immediate move to found a city next to the corn, pigs, and iron (he may already have done this). I think pottery would be a good choice to get researched soon, if not our next tech. Obviously, we also need to get a few axemen up and running pretty quickly, I feel more exposed to the south than the north.

Would like input on these 3 things:
1. Decision to build mine at Athens - not sure if this was the right thing to do early in the game, especially if we're planning to use the whip alot?
2. City placement of Corinth.
3. Farming instead of chopping at Sparta, probably delayed the worker a little with this decision.

Cheers, think we've got a challenge ahead.

Good, good... glad we have iron over there.

The mine in athens was fine since we're at the happiness limit. Actually another mine would've been great because now Athens has no more improved tiles to work on and targeting the unmined hill.

Corinth... meh, it's that settle on the shore vs 1 tile away from shore but more workable tiles thing. Though, said "more workable tiles" only comes into use in the far future where we're overflowing with :). Since we're creative, I don't think the iron being 2 tiles away is an immediate problem. So yeah, the shore may have been better.
exab.jpg

If the iron deposit on the right is JC's only iron, then we'd better work fast to deny it. IF.

With regards to Sparta... it takes 6 turns to chop wood, 1 turn to get there, 30 hammers for the worker. It takes 5 turns to farm, but the bonus is +3 food each turn for the corn. I think the farming would've been better in the long run. Since worker is already done in 5 turns it's too late to chop.

We probably need the forests to offset the flood plains unhealthiness in the future, but there are 5 patches of trees, we can probably afford to cut one more of them.

I guess we should road up the gold to the capital soon for :).

Yeah Corinth is better off either 1W on the shore or 1SE to grab deer as well. We are a bit short on defenders.

I doubt we will be fast enough to grab the iron spot but let's see (it is only Monarch, afterall).

What do people think abt our short-mid term plan? What are the objectives we are going for? Wipe JC off the world? Wonders? Race to any particular tech? Land grab?

Maybe we don't need a city to deny the iron, just troops there to... "discourage" any settlers.

You're right, better hook up soon and build an axe or 3 for defense. Then whatever army to crush JC. (Swordsmen?)
Thing is, though, we have a lot of space to expand. Do we REX peacefully until we run out of space before attacking?

As for wonders, hmm... we don't have any stone or marble so we're sort of crippled in this sense. Pericles has PHI, so how about Writing up to Literature and Great Library for Scientists. After all, Sparta makes a decent GP farm.

We may go for philosophy gambit, but Pacifism won't be much use to use because we will be warring soon.

I think I am up, so I played.

Some MM'ing (since the objective is to re-learn how to win in higher levels ... MM'ing become increasingly important in higher levels).

Since we know that we are happy cap, we should be working on lesser food tile but higher commerce or hammer tiles. Gold will take at least 10 turns to connect, so it won't help in time.

RK12-BC1750-MM.jpg

Having said that, it doesn't really matter much. Because 1 or 2 turns later, I decided to start a settler. So, the population should go back to high food yield.

But, just when I wanted to do that, the most-hated event occurs.

RK12-BC1700-revolt.jpg

Sigh. I chose the second option, and suspended the settler to allow city to grow back. Once grown, settler was resumed and later whipped. Hence, end of my turns, the above MM lesson is pointless, since gold is connected and city Athens needs to regrow its whipped pop.

Anyhow, strangely, when Corinth's border pops, we got a message that city was connected to Athens.

RK12-BC1575-connected.jpg

Probably because the culture pop covers the coastline. Strange because I thought sailing is required to connect city by coastline.

Anyhow, it is a good thing, since that means the iron need not be roaded back to Athens. A road on the iron mine would connect it to Corinth, and since thereby to Athens by induction.

RK12-BC1450-Iron.jpg

The iron was connected just before Corinth completes its warrior, and it automatically become a spearman  ... an axe would be better.

Research wise, I completed archery, and proceeded with pottery -> writing, now started Maths.

With writing in, I open borders to JC, and immediately Buddhism is spread to Athens

RK12-BC1375-OB-Bud.jpg

As you can see, he has no iron.

We are rated the weathiest CIv ... thanks.

RK12-BC1475-Wealthiest.jpg

Note also in the last three screenies, you can see that Judaism is FIADL, and Oracle and Great Wall are also BIADL. Let's hope it is not the same distant land.

End turn, our settler is nearly at the iron denial site.

RK12-BC1350-Map.jpg

JC has an archer stationed there, but no settler in sight. So, we probably will beat him to it. We can either settle 1E of pig, 1W of iron, or 1S of corn ... all will pull in 2~3 peaks into our BFc  A forth alternative is to settle on iron.

However, do note that there is one more source of iron in the north coast to deny ... which is probably easier since it is much closer to us.

We should probably whip the library in Sparta, and start running a scientist or two there once it grows to happy cap to take advantage of our Philosophical trait.

Looking ok so far. Maybe whip settler in Sparta to grab ironfish. Jules will probably grab copper and a site north of there but that's ok. If we get him up to pleased (OB, religion, trade etc) we're probably safe.

All right, looks like it's my turn again, I'll be able to check the save and play in about 8-9 hours.

I think I'm going to settle on the iron, unless there's any more violent opposition. :D

Not any time I've tried it (but what do I know).
