RK12 - Monarch "just win again"

I'm not sure if there's a benefit, but I'm just thinking to settle on the iron to avoid having too many peaks.

Still at office, will play in 3-4 hours.

I checked, seems like only iron on plains will give an extra hammer. In that case, I wouldn't sacrifice the production gains to avoid peaks. I would actually choose 1W of iron to have only 2 peaks, while close enough to marble such that we will grab it at the third border pop. WIth two food sources, that city could be a production powerhouse with iron mines and a few southern hills.

Turn 107
I accept Open Borders with WK.

Turn 108
civ4screenshot0011.jpg

City of "Iron Denial" (ID) is founded, and it starts a Worker.
Corinth: Spear -> Barracks

In the meantime, some fighting with barbs has claimed the life of one of our Warriors.
I micromanage Athens to finish the archer and grow at the same time, start a Worker.

Turn 112
civ4screenshot0012.jpg

No more growing for Sparta, so I work the unmined hill instead of the Corn. Send worker to build a mine there.

Turn 117
Athens: Worker -> Barracks
Sparta: Library -> Phalanx
Run 2 scientists at Sparta.
Begin moving workers to Corinth and Iron Denial site.

Turn 120
Corinth: Barracks -> Phalanx
Tech: Math -> Alpha
I'm not sure what tech to pick right now. Since my turnset will be over soon, I would want to know if after Alpha we are going Construction or Aesthetics->Literature (after trading for Mysticism and Polytheism).

Turn 122:
Athens: Barracks (unfinished) -> Settler in 9 turns
This will probably be our last settler for a while as we probably won't be healthy economically after another city.
JC has settled the horse site. Probably on top of the hill.
civ4screenshot0013.jpg

Turn 123:
Open Borders with SB for Trade.

Turn 125 (875 BC):
I stop at a round number to point out that we are really encroaching on Julius' place right now. Here's what's going on in our glorious Empire right now. (Image is big, so spoilered.)
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0014.jpg

Oh yeah, before you ask why I've decided to build Phalanx for now instead of Swords, is to garrison the cities with to prepare for the inevitable babarian Axemen.

WHAT'S NEXT, OH GREAT SUCCESSORS!?
A. Tech?
1. Do we finish Alpha at all?
2. After Alpha, or if we interrupt it..
a. Construction?
b. Aesthetics->Literature? (after trading for Myst and Poly)
c. Like letter b, but afterwards Priesthood->CoL?
d. Currency->CoL?
B. City site.
1. I say Black X marks the spot, still. Who cares if JC has horse. Any other ideas?
2. Last settler for now, definitely. I'm sure our economy is dead (except for ouse SE) after the last city.
C. When to attack JC?
(thoughts?)

Save is below. Enjoy!

ROSTER:

RK - Meatbuster
Shearer9 (are you ready for the most important 15 turns of your life? oh okay maybe not that important but still)
--- ??? --- (still open, please come in!)
Grey Fox (on deck)
pigswill (auto-skip)

Still on 3.17 coz of sgotm and PH15not. Hopefully sgotm will be finished before official finish date.

Edit:whip settler in Athens, grab ironfish, don't locate it too close (i.e. overlapping BFC) to roman cities or we get diplo penalties.

Economy? With libraries and ability to build research with alphabet we'll be ok short term and better off long term if we grab the land now.

Oh, okay, skip still, then.

I forgot to mention too, I suppose Academy should go in Sparta since Great Scientist is due soon.

Ironfish? I dunno, maybe 1SW of the Black X myself for IronFishPigsRice, less desert, and only 2 overlap with JC's city when it expands.

Will look at this a bit later, just wanted to check in, a lot of stuff has happened since I last looked.

30+ turns is a long way when it's an SG eh..? When I'm playing through 30 turns myself, it's like it never happened unless there's a war.

I would go for 1SW of X too (i.e. north of the current archer on hill), considering we won't win the horse over. That will grab us iron, and turn that city to a decent production center with enough food to work on the mines.

I think we should also send a unit to scout JC to check his land and the presence or absence of metal. If there is no metal, we can consider killing him off, and take over the Buddhism holy city :evil:

Bump.

I think it's already past 60 hours since the got-it. :)

Which means a skip. How about it being your turn again, GreyFox?

Sure let's scout JC. I'm sure Swordsmen are a bad matchup against archers. Bwahaha.

I've just upgraded to 3.19 so can be slotted in wherever convenient.

If we're going for war vs JC then maths>construction is worth considering. If we're going to settle and grow then aesthetics>lit for Glib has a certain appeal (as does alph>currency>CoL).

Hey, do you guys still need another member? I'm a Noble player though (trying to move up to Prince currently), so I hope that's all right. :D

Whoops, didn't realize we were going with a 60 hour rule. If I can still play the turn I can get it up by Monday night EST. I could also go after pigswill, I know he hasn't played yet. Sorry, I've just had a busy weekend.

I'm happy for Shearer9 to go first.

Hello, Rift. I'm happy for you to join but its Meatbuster's decision. Good way to improve is to play an SG above your solo level (and not going on about 'I hope I don't screw the game up for the rest of you').

Just put Rift infront of me in the roster and I am sure his (her) level will improve in no time :whipped: :D

Shearer, most SG runs implicitly with 24/48 rule (i.e. 24hrs to post a "got-it" from the previous player's save, and 48hrs to play/report from the "Got-It"), so usually no need to explicitly mention. And Robo (that is Meatbuster) is famous for being an impatient captain ;), perhaps second only to some dude who used to run the Fox's SG series ... :p

ROSTER:
RK - Meatbuster (Just played. Yes, the Fox is right, I am an impatient man.)
Shearer9 (Can play Monday Night EST, otherwise skip. It's already Monday Night here. Fortunately, my timezone is +8.)
Rift (On deck. Don't worry about it, we usually talk about our plans a lot so you have an idea what to do in your 15 turns.)
Grey Fox (on second deck)
pigswill (is now also on 3.19 and thus, back)

Hey guys, just realized its been 5 days since the game was posted, that's far too long, I apologize. Anyway, on to the game.

Turn 126 - Caesar has just moved a Settler/archer combo just north of ID, guess he's looking to settle in that desert?

Turn 127 - Sent worker near Corinth to go chop up that forest west of the hill. Caesar has founded Arretium just outside of ID.

Spoiler :

Turn 128 - The slider is now down to 60%, we were losing 4 GPT when I first started but now we're at +1. Phalanx just built in Corinth, barb archer approaching outside the city. Still no indication Caesar has iron. Starting to build a mine at ID, would like to see them being work on a Phalanx. Building a worker there in the meantime.

Turn 130 - GS is in at Sparta, built an Academy there. Shifted one scientist back to work in the field. Want to make sure we're well defended.

Turn 131 - Settler done

Turn 133 - Found Holy Rome. Easily strikeable.
Spoiler :

Turn 134 - They've got another settler on the move south of ID, looks like they'll build another city down there.

Turn 136 - Sparta - Phalanx >Barracks
Athens - Barracks > Swordsman
ID - worker > Phalanx

Turn 137 - Ethiopian workboat just came down the coast so now we know them
Spoiler :

Turn 138 - Thebes has now been properly founded, one SW of the X, and Athens became unhappy so I whipped for a swordsman. On a library now. Our economy is now very bad, but I switched and started working that goldmine outside of Sparta without extra citizen.
Spoiler :

Turn 140 - Mediolanum has now been established south of ID.
Spoiler :

I've tried to build up the military a little bit, we've got 2 swordsmen and a few extra Phalanxes as well. There are 2 squares of fog outside of Rome, but I seriously doubt those contain iron. I also haven't seen any horse related units from Caesar either, but he does have horses. Surely we should attack ASAP, he may soon have one source of bronze outside of Arretium. And yes, we do have -2 relations for close borders now.

I'm also curious about city specialization. I suppose Sparta needs to stay as a GP Farm, but I've tried to built some cottages at Corinth because we're gonna need the commerce. I think Thebes is a poor candidate for a Commerce city, so that leaves ID. Should we start building cottages there?

Unfortunately we didn't have a tech breakthrough this turnset, but our economy is really flagging now, surely when we attack Caesar the only city we should keep is Rome?

Here's our civ:

Well, I took a look at the save and did a little thinking...

About the city specialization, Corinth and ID will probably be our best production cities. I suggest farming the only 2 riverside grasslands near ID to allow it to work all its mines. That still leaves 6 grasslands for cottages which should help our commerce. Since our economy's kinda low at the moment, we could use ID as our commerce city, then switch it over to production later when we're ready to start attacking JC.

Corinth's more suited as a production city with all those mines around it. It could work well as our 2nd military city for the war (though we'd probably need to build a road from it to ID to minimize travel time). Thing is, we'd need that riverside grassland tile taken up by the cottage for another farm, in addition to one more farm on the free riverside grassland if we want to work all the mines.

Sparta should probably remain our GP farm since the academy's already there. I'm not sure what we should do with the GS we get though...lightbulb them for the short-term or settle them for the long-term? If we're gonna run Caste System, we could farm ALL the riverside grasslands and go to town with scientists galore. Or should we go for a mixture of farms and cottages for the commerce?

Athens and Thebes...we don't really need any more farms. We could either cottage them for the commerce, or wait for workshops and watermills to boost their production.

About the impending war against JC, it's attractive to get rid of him as soon as we can, especially since he's bound to get that copper soon. Our economy's currently in pretty bad shape though from all the expansion and we don't have that much of an army yet. So the problem is both time and money...

Nice observations, Rift. :D
By the way, it is your turn.

Iron Denial may need more farms when Civil Service rolls around.
Looks like it's a tough life out there, but we can easily go SE and run low % after taking SOME of JC's cities. Fortunately it doesn't look like a tough war since JC has mostly archers and his forces are rather spread out.

From the map I'd like to keep Rome, Neapolis and Antium (and maybe the north horse city) and raze the rest (we can fill them in later when we're more stable). We can work our way to Code of Laws and Currency easily via SE (or CoL via trading, I find the AI's trade out CoL more readily than Currency).
