Actually, if we go by percentage of the vote in 2004 for Bush, Utah is the most conservative state in the US. Idaho is close behind.

The Southern Democrats, while certainly very racist and socially conservative, were very economically leftist, moreso than the average Northern Democrat. The reason they remained Democrats for so long was only partially because of resentment of the Republican Party for the Civil War; by and large they were Keynesian supporters of FDR, and FDR's socialist-light politics kept them in the Democratic Party for ~ 40 years longer than they would have stayed otherwise.

Anyway, the point is moot. Obviously the Christian Liberals are a separate party.
