Do building roads under cottages or mines(that are not actual on a resource) do anything for the square. Do roads only add improvements to tiles that have a +(bonus) for road/railroad? Or do road add bonuses to cottages and the like for just being there even if they are not going to ever be used and the tile says nothing about +road bonuses?

I think the answer to your question, is no they do not add any bonus to a cottage, farm, etc.

Roads do the following things:
1. Connect resources
2. Reduce movement costs
3. Railroads add +1 production to certain improvements (mine, lumbermill)

in older civ games, like Civ II, i thought they did and i was thinking that maybe that carried over, but i could just be very wrong on all counts...

i appreciate the info, does anyone remember if they used to help on the older civ games, im just curious if i am remembering correctly at this point.

thank you!

i've recently stopped automating my workers, but do automated workers put roads everywhere or just where they need to be?

I usually automate workers to Build Trade Network (With Do not build over existing improvements checked) when I get Railroad. By that point in the game the chopping and improvement building is done.

If fighting in your territory, a good road network can give you signifigant mobility advantages over the enemy. It may give you enough movement to strike at an enemy stack then retreat back to safety, or to occupy defensive terrain before their units can get to it. You can often use your movement advantages and and active defense to protect your resources even when on the losing end of a war.
