Rod02-Caesar's Confusion

680AD (5):
Start Invention at 60% in 9 turns. Could go to 8 -59gpt. Not right now. We have 540 form the one turn at 10%.
cats at Hippo do their usual and go 1 for 5.
Greeks left the red sword, so 4.5 legion kills it (1-0).
1st finishes a red horse (2-0).
3/4 legion kills Mayan spear (3-0).
6/6 AC kills Japanese archer (4-0).
4th kills archer in Akwe and captures it (5-0).

Form 11th and put one knight in it. I will wait to see if I can send it back a ways to get filled.

6/6 AC retreats on a JT.
6/6 AC kills it (6-0).

8th kills Zulu archer (7-0).
2nd kills impi (8-0).

5/5 legion kills sword (9-0).
5/5 mdi kills Hittite sword (10-0).

Send leader to rush a market next turn. Move the 11th to the newly minted 5/5* to add next turn.

10th kills 2 American swords. Mdi move to it to add next turn (13-0).
Both cats fail at Thebes.
MDI kills Az spear and goes elite (14-0).
MDI killls Az archer (15-0).
Cats work well at Memphis and 3rd kills one of the archers (16-0). [88-3]

If theres any way to, try to get the egyptian and arab towns in the northeast to clear that sector.

Yep, looks like you're on it. Having one sector with few worries will be nice. Oh there may be landings now and then, but a couple mobile troops in the area can handle that.

Here is the save and I just realized that I did ot go around to check the towns. I already switched to a game other than civ, so too lazy to reload. Should not be much going on in terms of citizens.

Builds are always up to the taste of the turn player:

690AD (6):
Found Agrippina.
5th kills Japanese spear (1-0).
knight kills Egyptian archer (2-0).
4/5 MDI kills Az sword (3-0).
mdi kills Az spear (4-0).
7th kills Az archer (5-0).

Note 2nd is still short one unit. Added knight to 11th. Rushed market with leader.
10th got its 4th unit.

10th kills English sword (6-0).
Switch treb to barracks at Warwick.
Break down and upgrade 3/5* legion at Salamanca.
8th kills French sword (7-0).
3/5 legion kills Fr sword at Salamanca (8-0) and is red now.

4th kills Mayan sword at Akwe (9-0).
4th kills French sword also (10-0).

IBT:
Just more movement.

7th kills Egyptian archer (1-0).
3rd kills two archers (3-0).
MDI kills Hittite sword (4-0).
4/5 legion retreats 3man.
5/5 legion kills Hittite spear (5-0).

Knight killed the 3man and goes elite (6-0).
We got our first Crusader.
5/5 legion kills vike spear in Oslo (7-0).
Legion kills one and autorazed Oslo for 1 slave and 4 gold (8-0).
6th kills Mayan sword (9-0).
5th kills Nippon spear (10-0).
Switch treb to pike at Bergen.

5/5 legion kills American spear and makes a leader (11-0).
I switched Berlin to wealth for this turn as the leader has no movement left. Next turn will rush market and then go back to knights. No sense in making shields this turn, may as well take the gold.

10th kills American archer (12-0).
Pike covers MDI at Frankfurt as two English units are adjacent.
2nd kills impi (13-0).
2 man 11th kills American archer (14-0).
MDI kills Korean archer (15-0).
5/5 MDI kills Japanese spear (16-0).
knight kills celt pike (17-0). [122-3]

IBT:
nada

710AD (8):
Alright, I am close to the end of the set, so I will try to add the locations of battles for the next player.

MDI kills Greek sword at Bergen (1-0). In case it is not evident, when a unit is not a vet I will mention that fact or try to anyway.

*** settler in Hispalis with the idea of making a town 3 tiles above it. May as well plug that gap as I think it will be less of a front to defend than we now have. I could be wrong.

Cats at Memphis have a 1 for 4 effort.
MDI kills dutch sword at Memphis (2-0).
Rushed the market at Berlin with leader.
5/5 knight kills Russia archer at Frankfurt (3-0).
5/5 mdi kills Hittite mdi near Frankfurt(4-0). Cover with pike.

7th kills Egyptian archer near Thebes (5-0).
6th kills Mayan sword at Akwe (6-0).
2nd kills Iroq archer at Warwick and Korean horse (8-0).
1st kills sword at Bergen (9-0).
1st kills Greek spear there (10-0).

** I just realized the 1st is also a 3 man army. I have sent an AC to join the 2nd. I am not going to add in any knights as we cannot spare them.
5th kills Greek sword (11-0).

knight kills Az spear and goes elite at Thebes (12-0).
8th kills English spear at Salamanca (13-0).
9th kills 2 spears in Ulaanbaatar and captures it for 1 gold and 2 slaves (15-0).
Still have 7 units in our land. [137-3]

IBT:
Mongol archer attack army in Ulaan (1-0).
3 of 4 swords jump on 3rd and it kills them the other leaves (4-0).
I realize I missed recording a kill as the 3rd killed a unit from that stack last turn, oh well. Bound to miss something.
[141-3]

720AD (9):
7th kills Egyptian archer atThebes (1-0).
5/5 legion kills Egyptian spear in Asyut (2-0).
5/5 legion kills English spear at Berlin and gets a leader (3-0).
We have 46 towns, so we need two more.

** I make a move that may not be the right one here. I moved the 1st (ACx3) to Trondheim and disband to rush a market. I then rename Legion-9th to 2nd. Rename AC-2nd to AC-1st. I rename MDI-10th to MDI-9th. I form new army named Knight-10th. I load the knight there. I was going to send it to Bergen area, but will hold it in this area and hope we can get a leader down there soon.

Main reason is that I would like to get as many knight armies as possible and the 3xAC is not as good as a knight armies. We should have enough down there to hold on.

10th kills English sword at Berlin (4-0).
Found Cyrene.
Load 6/6* AC into 1st.
5/5* Legion kills French sword between Salamanca and Warwick (5-0).
Upgrade *legion to MDI at warwick.
11th kills Iroq horse at Warwick (6-0).
11th kills Iroq archer there (7-0).
Knight kills vike sword near Trondheim and I cover with 5/5 legion (8-0).
5/5 knight kills Celt mdi near Hispalis (9-0).
5/5 legion kills Japanese spear there (10-0).
MDI kills one there (11-0).
Move settler to that spot.
[152-3]

IBT:
Action this time. Sumerian sword attacked Ulaanbaatar (1-0).
Celt MDI attacked legion on the site of our next town (2-0).
Japan sent an archer and a sword at the pike there and the pike is now elite (4-0) [156-3]

730AD (10):
5/6 AC kills Greek sword at the newly founded Tyrus (1-0).
5/5 legion kills Greek sword at Trondheim (2-0).
We now have enough towns for another army.
4/5 legion kills Egyptian spear and captures Asyut (2-0).

Crusader goes red, but kills the hop at Trondheim (3-0).
I fort the legion there as if I move it, it will be exposed in any direction.
11th gains a 3rd unit.
MDI kills American sword at Warwick (4-0).
9th kills two American swords there (6-0).
11th kills Zulu horse there (7-0).
3rd kills Dutch sword at Memphis (8-0).
5th kills Japanese sword at Bergen (9-0).

Ulaanbaatar I do not attack as there are 4 units and I have only the army and a regular archer.

Three legions are approaching to help. I figure the army can take the attack, I hope.

8th kills a spear near Salamanca (10-0).
5/5 MDI kills Russian sword near Memphis (11-0).

I have a legion heading toward Asyut as well.
[163-3]

Not much to pass on, except that we have 2 knight armies that are not filled. Still need to get some settlers, not easy at this stage.

I did not check CA to see if anyone that we know has knights, but we have not seen any. Once we get about 5 knight armies up, we can try to gather 3 to go on a razing campaign.

Things will start to speed up for in a couple of sets as we will have quite a few knights. Main concerns will be that knights will attack pikes and legions.

Also Musketeers will be a real pain.

Count me as a skip this time, I am afraid. I think I'll be back in action for my next go-round though.

PS: A coastline! Yay!

DWetzel- skip
Kulko- up
TheOverseer714-
CommandoBob -
Vmxa - just played
Rodent (MIA)

Downloaded the save and will try to get something going over the weekend.

Sorry Guys, my Daughter got ill and I am stuck with about half a turn played. will try to continue a bit every day now.

Three hours?

I hadn't done much MM, but I didn't think it was that bad.

CBob, I just wanted to be sure you knew the amount of time I spent had nothing to do with the job you did. In fact, I only changed one citizen. I did change a lot of builds, but most of them were not even started by you and were not even an issue with anyone.

Just going around and looking at every town and every unit takes a lot of time, even if one does not change a thing. Builds in towns are mostly a matter of convenience and often just a place holder. Heck I even changed some of the changes later on.

Picking up after the next guy takes time. Games played as SGs tend to grow considerably from your previous turn-set and become unfamiliar. The bigger the map the longer that takes.

Played 3 turns. Going is smoother by now, posting a 68-4 record so far.

I got new leaders and the second puts me in a squeeze: We have 50 towns and i l take a probably 1 more turn to get to 52. I could wait and "waste" a lot of Elite Vics. Or I could rush a market in Cumae. Given the high frequency of leaders I am inclined to do the second.

I also just finished Invention (Leo due in 16) and will start on GP? Makes the Pikes expensive but we want MT as soon as possible I assume.

Kulko don't be afraid to disband the AC army and form a knight army if it makes sense. As long as you won't be at risk from the immediate loss of the AC army. You would need to be able to get either the leader or an army where they would do some good.

An aqua is also an option.

I took a slightly longer odd on taking Reikjavik and it worked like a charm. We are on the offensive on all fronts by now and are only slowed by missing settlers and slaves.

@ vmxa why do you disband AC Armies instead of legions? They have the same attack and I would value the better Movement more then the extra 1 defense.

Because the defense. We are getting close to the point where you will not have many targets to attack with the AC. Once they take damage they will get attacked by knights and cavs. I am meaning yellow, not red.

AC armies will not be able to reliably hold newly captured or created towns in the face of knights. Legions will ( green armies).

Down the road a bit, they come back into value with rails. The movement will not matter then, but the defense will. I am ignoring MDI and LB for now, but they are also a potential threat.

It could be that at this level we will continue to have targets for a time as they are unable to send middle age units at all times.

The other factor is that the AC army can be sent farther to some place useful to be disbanded. Overall that is the way I do it, but it is not critical.

I have had troubles in the past in AWE with trying to use AC armies to escort stacks of slaves, but not Legion armies. Even when they have cavs, they leave them alone. I do not remember seeing a healed Legion army in the field being attacked in any game.

I cannot say that about AC armies. It is true that both will probably be fine so long as they are not damaged. It is the times when they need to be used or put into towns that is my concern.

One of the turns I had a legion army captured a mongol town on the far left of the map. It was attacked in town and beat off all the attackers. I would not have attempted to take that town and hold it with an AC army.

Reached beginning of turn 7. One more leader, which will become an Army when I settle two new towns this turn.

I am also slowly carving up Egypt and the Mayas. Surprisingly Culture seems to be no problem at all, even a Mayan Core town with overlap to the capital has no flip risk at all.
