Role Play Challenge: Brennus, A Simple Man

Well, I guess I'm gonna take a look at the save and maybe play it a little...I'm thinking a regenerate? Terrible start.

Spoiler :
The starting island sucks and you're pretty much isolated. I vote for regenerate, I didn't play it for too long but I took a look at worldbuilder when I realized I was isolated with Elizabeth

Regenerate! The map you got really isn't in the spirit of the game.

Subscription post, also, I normally play on Noble.

I played through 2000 BC. Frankly I do not see how it is so bad, although not the best ever. I have NOT teched Iron Working, that shall wait until the next segment (NO spoliers!!!). Update coming.

No regenerate for Brennus. If we fail here it's onto the next leader. But let's give the big guy a chance!!! ;)

PS: remember how stubborn I can be in playing out a map. Refer to Willem, King of the Sea for an example!

Brennus, A Simple Man: Part I

Brennus send his scout south to check out the lands

BrennusA0000.jpg

Hmmm, this is not good. No Food we move!! The Celtic settler moves onto the Eastern hill, and Brennus gets confused.

BrennusA0001.jpg

Danged. Settle in place, I always say settle in place!!!

Brennus orders the Celtic settler to move back east which they happily do!

Finally, Brennus settles in palce, the opportunity for fresh pork leaves him delighted.

Very soon Brennus meets a very Pretty Red Headed Lady, sort of reminds him of his BIG sister ;)

BrennusA0003.jpg

Our techpath was nothing fancy: AH/archery/agriculture/mining/BW start the wheel.

After AH we find

BrennusA0004.jpg

A bigger view of the continent

BrennusA0005.jpg

Jungle to the south of the ponies and plains to the north!!!

We VERY VERY quickly built a settler with a pop of 3! We even loss the pig pastuer to a locust swarm, but that did not deter the sheer will power of our leader.

BrennusA0006.jpg

Not a bad city. Looks like we got the only horse source. Brennus laughs and wonders to himself if the redhead who looks like his BIG sister likes to wrestle too!!!!

Of course after BW we find

BrennusA0007.jpg

Hmmm....

AFter BW we saved our game. The entire small land mass

BrennusA0009.jpg

Yes, looks difficult.

Brennus fun aside, I am 100% certain that the English lass must die, and VERY soon!!!

On the bright side, we did settle our 2 cities on hills! That's gotta count for something.

OK, no fooling arround, after the wheel I say we tech HBR and IW. Take care of business then we can argue about how to play out an Isolated start using bearskins and knives, er I mean farms and mines.

Don't be so hasty to take her out. Yeah, you'll get a few more cities, but keeping her alive might be worth it.

See, Brennus is brawn, Elizabeth is all brains. So you rex towards her, keep her small. Tech to code of laws, get some courthouses up, and run some spy specialists. settle the great spies and use them to steal from her. Even with 3 or 4 cities she's going to outtech you by miles even if you have twice as many cities. After optics or astronomy, then you can take her out.

OKay, nice lady. Steal tech, Brennus become smart! :D

Hurry, REX, REX, REX! Try and leave Lizzy with maybe one or two cities. DoW if you have too. But don't kill her. Leave her with a few cities and spy!

Also, who finds it kind of funny that it's the Celtics and the English on their own little island? :D Just like real life...sort of.

I still think you should maybe regenerate.

What kind of victory are you hoping for? I was expecting a Domination/Conquest victory but now that seems incredibly unlikely.
Culture? Nah...Space...I kind of doubt it. Maybe diplomatic?

Anyway, it's too early in the game to decide...

:mischief:

Wow that is a tough start and a tiny landmass for two civs.

I think taking her out sooner rather than later is a better idea purely to get all those gems off her, without cottages you'll probably be needing those.

Good luck with this, it certainly should be a challenge. :)

Also, there's gonna be A LOT of farmed plains...

I reccomend leaving pretty much all of the forests. And you should allow Brennus to build Forest Preserves (for commerce and :)) in the late game! Brennus loves the forests and the animals! :D

If you're gonna attack Elizabeth I would wait for a while. But eventually, Brennus will have to destroy her empire and possibly take Elizabeth as a wife

Interesting. Here's my 'plan':

1) Settle near the Horses.
2) Build three warriors, one or more with Combat I.
3) Chop and whip out Chariots. Skip on the promotions for now.
4) Use your 3 warriors to find a city that Elizabeth has settled in/near the jungle belt. If its guarded by an Axeman or Spearman, that means she has the Copper. If its guarded by an Archer, spring into action:

While continuing the Chariot buildup (remember, don't promote them yet), declare war on Elizabeth. Move towards her new city and use 2 to attack the Archer. The odds will suck, but normally you can get the Archer to 1/3 health. Send in the Combat I Warrior to finish off the Warrior. Send in a Chariot if you're nervous. Raze/autoraze the city. Make peace, but do NOT select the 10 turn peace treaty. Go for the Ceasefire instead. I believe this will let you declare war on the next turn, giving you a tad more flexibility.

5) Take all your unpromoted Chariots, and declare war again. Give your Chariots Flanking I, then attack the Archers guarding London until an unpromoted Chariot has 30%-40% odds of winning. Then start handing out the Combat I promotions until the Chariots are dead. Send in a Warrior or Archer to hold the city. Rinse and repeat with any remaining city. I've tried this on Ragnar, and it works quite well.

6) The rest is up to you.

Well given the situation

CoL and Alphabet show up as desirable (building research definitely)

get all those good Coastal cities, and the Gems for commerce.

I'd probably crush Liz with Chariots, no HBR, go for Alphabet, then Currency, then CoL, then finish REXing the island

Then go Optics/Astronomy (I forget what is needed to allow you to bulb Astronomy... I think it might involve avoiding CoL (but if you pick up Philosophy it might be OK... in any case, I'd save the GS you should get from your libraries to try and pop that.)

I like this idea the most. Liz definitely needs to be rushed, if anything else for the resources (gems), a second capital, and plenty of farm area. I think by the time we get the spy system going Liz will be on liberalism while we are still teching something like Currency. We are going for production, might as well take advantage.

OK, chariots. How about after the wheel? IW or HBR.

be careful with taking out Liz, she is going to tech like a monster, especially if you don't manage to keep her off the gems, given that you're limited to farms and mines this could quickly become especially apparent. you'll have to be especially quick to take her out and especially careful not to throw yourself too far into the red when you do it or you could fall disastrously behind.

you'll want to pickup IW next, once you get liz out of the way most of the prime land for this variant is around that river between Vienne and London.

given that there is going to be an abundance of food (no cottages right), currency and writing will be important because they open up some of the more important specialist granting buildings, and since you can't use Caste system....

after playing it out some more, i agree, this probably won't be as bad as it looks, but you could have a hard time if you tank your economy... (like i did)

I believe you have to tech to math and alphabet, but avoid CoL and CS. It was in the ALC Ragnar game, I believe it was Validator who came up with it. I'll try to find it.

Edit: Here it is-

Once you've finished optics you can get to the point of researching Astronomy quickly. You'll only need Math->Calendar.

While Astronomy is an expensive tech it should be possible to use a GS to bulb about half of it, and possibly even use 2 GSs to bulb it entirely. According to the GS tech list kniteowl posted a couple of pages back the only other tech you would need to get out of the way for the Astronomy bulb would be Alphabet. You would need to avoid Meditation, CS and Theology to block Philosophy and Paper.

Me, tank my economy? Ridiculus ;)

I believe we need to avoid CoL to prevent Philosphy, and CS or Theology to block Paper. I bulbed half of astronomy in the Willem game, couldn't get both as my GP farm stunk compared with Sis' Ragnar game.
