Role Play Challenge: Julian Assange YouTube Shadow

Another great LP enjoying it, can't wait for part 3.

I like the longer videos, I usually just continue watching your videos one after the other anyways, so I dont mind. But yeah just so people dont lose track of time I think right under 30 minutes is good, the time a tv series usually last, seems pretty good to me.

TMIT,

I just want to say that your videos are very entertaining and educational to watch. I think I spent a few hours watching your video run throughs on Liz and Charlie. You make everything seem so easy, playing it at such a quick pace.

I am a player that's been absent from Civ 4 for over 2 years, so I am very rusty and have forgotten a lot, as well as have not caught up with lot of more advanced techniques. My current game with Darius I (my favorite leader in Civ 4 by far) right now is an exercise in itself to try to get me back into shape, sorta speak. If you can provide me with some comments there, it would be great.

Keep up your videos. Like you mentioned in one of your videos, it is unfortunate that there isn't a lot of advanced players that I see in this forum putting up videos. Their write ups have been great, but videos are something else entirely.

Isn't it better to settle that first great spy for the +12 esp. point boost and then build Scotland Yard for 100%? If you do this in your capital it would be 4+12*2=36 points very early in the game instead of the 8 you got early.

Guess the counter is that you miss out on all that commerce conversion in the second city with two scotland yards later once the slider is turned on (when the AIs are more ahead in tech).

Nice to see a Let's Play where espionage is used/abused. It's one of the features that I rarely use, but I'm always eager to learn more about the game.

I want more SY later too. I'm going to make scotland yards in every major commerce city. I'm clearly not hurting for EP now, whili I might want the multipliers on more commerce later for more aggregate output (that can suddenly switch, too).

Loving the game so far, in fact it inspired me to give the espionage economy a go, currently playing Mad's old Sneaky Mao Open RPC (remember that one?) :P

TMIT - I'm going through Part 2 now. Too bad you did not settle that corn/gold city just SW of the cap on the desert - you could have spread irrigation to the corn via the city.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. BTW, TMIT, you did cancel that ivory that Monty demanded in round 1, didn't you?

Question about the espionage game: You're taking advantage of the state religion bonuses to espionage in a foreign city, but in my current game I'm running Buddhism and when I perform espionage in Buddhist cities, that bonus doesn't show up among the others (like -50% stationary spy etc.) Any idea why not?

Religion in target city has to be different from their state religion. You get an even bigger multiplier if you have the holy city of the religion in the AI city.

Ah, haha. I wonder why that is (historically/realistically speaking that is.. what the explanation could be). EDIT: Figured it out... Probably a cabal of local citizens that feel more loyalty to the religion than their heathen overlords spreading state secrets to the faithful infiltrators.

I could probably espionage Gilgamesh into Hinduism (he's been a big flip-flopper bouncing back and forth between them, giving me a big headache since he's the only person I care about appeasing) but it's probably not worth it, the diplo is worth more than the espionage bonus. What is the bonus anyway? Is it -25%?

Just watched it. Your game is actually playing out similarly to mine, midieval warfare with elephants/trebs (though I'm using more Cho-ko-nus than trebs). As you've noted these games are super fun just cause you get to do such unconventional things -- I've never actually made much use of cho-kos before since Machinery is usually something I trade for and by the time I'm building armies they're not really current anymore. Gosh do they ever own.

I've got a large almost entirely cottage empire too but, like you, have mysteriously good production :P

I wondered in the part III why you didn't spy more on Suleiman? There is some demerits in diplo if you fail?

And I really didn't like the cottage all the land approach :-).

and am interested how you will crack the darius NC game ;-). I finished yesterday and made a little bit mistake with recording, so have only up to T178 on youtube :-(.

^^^Cottaging up is pretty logical in a full on EP game. It's really the only way to amass lots of EPs early with SYs since running spies are very limited. You only have one until the late game buildings.

What surprised me a little with TMITs game was amassing so much gold as opposed to upping the EP slider almost constantly. And with that, stealing techs more aggressively. Seems more in the spirit of the game I played through so far to the early to mid ADs and I stole techs constantly, and would switch focused based on who had or was soon to complete the next big tech. I would trade techs for other techs and gold along the way. I essentially had a strong tech lead over most of the AIs despite the passive nature of teching in this setup.
