Role Play Challenge: The Crusades!

The reason printing press is risky is he does not have machinery. not a huge risk, i will grant but it looks like Joao will not trade it away. basically, he does need to detour to grab it.

edit: he doesnt have it at all. my mistake.

I'm not used to the monarch liberalism timetable on marathon (I play normal and epic mostly), but the 1000's or even the 1100's seem pretty early for liberalism on that difficulty...you can often win it on emperor and sometimes even immortal at around 1100, although power techers will push it much earlier on certain maps at those difficulties (I've seen it go @ 800 AD on emperor, but that's rare...bit more common on immortal I think but still usually a bit later).

Anyway, I vote nationalism. I'm sure he can find a use for the golden age from taj. Why would he want astro? He can't open borders or trade with anyone most likely.......he intentionally skipped founding religions, where do you think those religions went?

PP is ok but my beef with it is that 1) It's easily bulbed and 2) you need a lot of villages/towns to make it worth going for early (in my game it would have been of very minimal use)...unless of course you're gunning for democracy, scientific method or rifling I suppose (but then again it's taken care of easily enough with a bulb, so take something more directly helpful/beaker heavy with lib).

wait, this thing is on marathon? so it is! well, this is embarrassing. i thought he has a terrible economic crash on his hand, based on the research speed. my fault about this. sorry everybody. Alright, now i pretty much agree with TMIT that of the current options, nationalism is your best bet.
sadly, you cant draft your UU, actually, right now you will draft swordsmen. but getting gunpowder will make that a viable option. the other continent probably has longbows, but no way they would have their own musketmen. and building the Taj Mahal couldn't hurt!

And @TMIT, he will need astro for the upcoming invasion. I agree it is not that great of a priority, but you gotta get those transports somehow.

I'd gamble with Astronomy. I am curious why Joao is only pleased with you, but he won't DoW at pleased anyway. He has Confucianism only and won't revolt to FR soon, so you can't attack him. Maybe we can see some intercontinental cataphract action?

I agree with semirami, get Astronomy then get guilds, fill up your galleons with cataphracts and purge the heathens on the other continent!

Take nationalism from lib - with all of those cities you have, drafting will be huge. Post-lib, get to optics so you can find out what you're up against on the other continent. Forget about Joao - he'll be your best bud for the rest of the game, especially once your power rating goes through the roof.

Once you know what you're up against overseas, head up the banking line to boost your economy. This will also get your UU, although I'm not sure it will see much use in this game. Your BPT is pretty pathetic for 1000AD, and if you don't have a big tech lead you'll probably be fighting with rifles/cannon. It's a shame you didn't get the 'mids - Babylon running 7-8 rep scientists would be insane. :crazyeye:

Good luck. :goodjob:

The Cursades: Discovery of the Heathens!

A fairly long segment here, leading up to dawning of the CRUSADES!!!!!!!!!

I started by teching off Liberalism right away, no wanting to lose that race and any tech is helpful the sooner you get it!

we get notification that we are lagging in tech

JustD0000.jpg

Not a concern as we have ALOT to backfill.

Here one of the cities that Jaoa tried to ram up against us.

JustD0001.jpg

we disbanded it, not needing anything else right now.

We then met the first heathen

JustD0002.jpg

Filthy Celtics, we shall honor our God's and destroy this disgusting infestation of the earth. While Justinian is fanatical, he cannot swim to Celtia. So we bide our time and simply ignore him.

On the good side, finding another AI alloed Jaoa to open up trading techs.

First the tech situation

JustD0003.jpg

Looking grim right now, but let's see a little later.

The we started several tech trades with Jaoa

JustD0004.jpg

JustD0005.jpg

And we get this in Constaninople

JustD0006.jpg

2 beakers per Confuscian building! Sounds good to us!

And finally

JustD0007.jpg

we took nationhood, for the Taj and access to the draft!

Techpath! : Liberalism/Compass/Printing Press

JustD0008.jpg

Yes we bulbed most of PP: then Optics/Fuedalism/Guilds/Gunpowder/Banking/Economics (first there)/theology (about time!)/Astronomy and saved.

The lone city we settled this segment went

JustD0009.jpg

To acquire marble to the Taj which we are building in Babylonia (which has the Moari Statues) allowing us to build Oxford in Constaniople! The NE went in Constaninople also while the HE went to a city to the east (Don't remember which).

St. Agustine came by to determine

JustD0010.jpg

Yes, that we are the largest empire. Much more important than the techpace.

Anothger fill in tech trade

JustD0011.jpg

Just before

JustD0012.jpg

Between the Golden Age and OR we built most of the needed infrastructure while starting to amass a decent size force. The reason..

Heretics Abounding!

JustD0013.jpg

Louis got real pushy early, making unreasonable demands. Does this man not realize he has a date with eternity, and I do not mean Immortality!

The last fillin trade

JustD0014.jpg

Too bad education had to go, but alas we need to help our Confuscian bretheran.

We then met the Hindu Slime

JustD0015.jpg

Yes, looks like our first victum I think.

JustD0016.jpg

Yes definitely our first victum. Justinian announces to his people to prepare for a grand Crusade against these heathen Multi-god demon worshippers!

We meet a few more Heretics

JustD0017.jpg

JustD0018.jpg

And let's check the tech situation again.

JustD0019.jpg

To be continued

The Crusades!: Discovery of the Heathens!

we made good use of our Caravels, scouting out a jungle heavy southern land mass

JustD0020.jpg

Looks tempting, but we need Astronomy first and I prefer not to delay our Crusades! Besides, let our Portugese Brothers have a little more land!

As the Taj GA comes to an end we popped

JustD0021.jpg

Which we used for another GA

And

JustD0022.jpg

First to Economics (for some reason does not happen that often for myself) and we used him for

JustD0023.jpg

3900 gold trade mission!. We upgraded all our archers to longbows with some cash to spare. The main reson is I do not want to waste hammers towards rebuilding our core defenders (Louis does have Astronomy and perhaps has his own Crusades in mind).

We finally tech off the key tech

JustD0024.jpg

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We saved here.

The question is what do we tech next???

JustD0025.jpg

OK, we do not have much more time for the next GS which we can use to bulb most of chemistry. Perhaps we should go the replaceable parts/rifling line and finish off chemistry for Frigates and Privateers.

A view of the world.

JustD0026.jpg

Oh, is that Aztecia so close by? I seam to remember a recent RPC that ended with a loss to the Aztec religious game.

Techs

JustD0027.jpg

Now we are starting to get some serious ownage! 2 back to back GAs, a well spread Shrine,. and a large empire!

And our cities

JustD0028.jpg

See what our emphasis is....

So here we are! I say we spam out Galleons, maybe promote a few Galleys, and Purify the world from the Hindu menace!

Definitely since you need to invade another land, trying to round the world will be very useful.

Aztecs first seems good. It'll help you get a foothold. You won't have to fight the entire Jewish Alliance, who I will assume are friendly with each other.

Since you're ahead in tech, and fighting backwards people, you can either go all out war, and tech fast towards rifles and cavalry, or you can go towards some of the more science or building ones, like going towards democracy or biology, in order to firmly establish your empire, and just ahead like crazy. However, since you're mission was the crusades, and you really haven't fought a worthy opponent, I'd say, "KILL THE HEATHENS!" should be your mantra going forward in tech.

Given that your chance of getting a GS is only about 2 in 3, I say research Chemistry now and pump out some Frigates to protect your fleet and bombard Monty's coastal cities. If you can afford the gold, you might even consider building caravels while you wait and then upgrading them to frigates once the tech is in.

Shadow game, to the end:

Spoiler :

Domination victory in 1784, 114K score (personal best :) ).

As promised, a few screenies. :)
First, the situation in 1418, just after meeting all of the overseas gang of idiots. This is a shot of the area around the capital, showing the 2 cities that I managed to beat Joao to after taking Hammi out. They were key in keeping him rather limited through much of the game. Note that I had to settle Arianopole 1 off the coast to beat Joao to this area.
1418ADcapitalarea.jpg

Cuman, a barb city, popped up on the east side of the same peninsula. I was able to grab this with my highly promoted chariots from the Hammi campaign (I got one of them to combat 4! :crazyeye: ). This turned out to be a great secondary GP farm, where I later built the Globe Theater.
1418ADCuman.jpg

Babylon, my primary GP farm (d'oh) in 1418.
1418ADBabylon.jpg

The tech situation relative to the competition in 1418:
1418ADtechcomparison.jpg

And my own tech status:
1418ADtechpath.jpg

As you can see, I'm way ahead of everyone. In fact, no other civ got rifling or steel through the end of the game. Just after this shot, I switched from constitution to astronomy. After astro the tech path through the end of the game was sci meth, communism (switched to SP), constitution, corp, steam power, RR, combustion, democracy, AL, artillery, biology, electricity, industrialism (not finished before the end of the game).

In 1622, I resumed the invasion of Japan. As you can see, this was a bit of a joke: cavs (I had cannons but didn't need them here) vs samurai, longbows, and knights. I lost very few units for the rest of the game.
1622ADInvasionofJapan.jpg

While Toku was being beaten down, Louis broke away (Brennus never did ). When Toku was down to 2 island cities I went after Brennus (who was more advanced that Louis). Although he had cuirassiers, I now had infantry. After I killed him off, I cleaned up the last of Toku's islands and DOWed Louis. He had grens (but not cannon). I had C2 pinch cavs and drill2 pinch infantry. I finished off his cities on the mainland and then played whack-a-mole with his remaining island cities.

Now, only Monty was left. He had the highest power of the 4 stooges, and by leaving him until last he had advanced in tech mightily --- he had grenadiers  Of course, I now had artillery and fighters. And around 100 infantry. But on the turn before I DOWed, a bunch of Louis' cities came out of revolt and I crossed the domination limit in 1784.

Just for grins, I decided to play on until all the heathens were conquered. I attacked Monty with 2 main assault groups, one from the NW and the other from his captial in the south. These quickly split into 5 groups of around 25 units each. I think it actually took longer to clean up his many island cities than it did to wipe out his mainland. Here's Monty's last stand:
1802ADlastcitycaptured.jpg

Monty obviously wiped out Wang before I met him. All in all, a very fun (and very easy) game. So to wrap up:

Thessalonika in 1759, my wall street/holy city. I also built the HE here, as it had the best production after the capital.
1759ADThessalonika.jpg

Constantinople, the capital, in 1802. I bult oxford and ironworks here.

I want a crusade!!! Crush the infidels!!!! Tech only military techs quickly and Crush CRUSH CRUSH THEM!!!!! Pssst, did you know Monty uses a sacrificial altar???? He sacrifices people!! THE INFIDEL!!!! Did I already mention you need to crush him? Go Madscientist, go. Gods speed.

:agree:

The only question is whether to crush Monty with Rifles/Trebs or with Rifles/cannons :D

Almost every single city monty has is coastal. Use frigates to bombard, then whatever is easiest to take the cities. Wars like this are very fast as transit time in the ships is much shorter than marching on land...and he can probably get every or almost every city this way. Trebs should be fine...

Great Job! Glad you nabbed a religion, seems much more fitting to send out your soliders for your own faith than someone elses.

Are you in Theo? Seems fitting from a RP angle to stiffle other religions from coming into your land.

I agree on Chemistry next for frigate power.

For my own sick pleasure I am kinda hoping you get dogpiled, ALL HEATHENS UNITE AGAINST THE MAD TYRANTS! MUAAHAHAHA! I'm sure you can handle it..

YEx, we are in Theocracy.

You misunderstand Justinian. He simply wants to rid the world of all that devisive religous warfare (Monty appears doglied at teh moment) by unifying the world under Confuscian (or whatever religion we folllow) guidance!

The Crusades: Of the World's Purifaction from the Filth of the Aztec Sacrificial Altars!

While we desperately wanted to start some Crusading real fast, our muskets/trebs/Cataphraks just cannot swin! Unfortunately our lands have a rather poor naval communication line, so Galleons/Frigates were essentially produced from a few cities while a second fleet was built on our other side. In short, we have an eastern and western armada because we cannot move throughout the heathen lands because we do not have open borders!

So we were content in building infrastructre and Military.

Techpath wentChemistry/Replaceable Part/Rifling/Steel/ start corporation.

Soon we discovered

JustE0000.jpg

Very intersting! GW is a Taoist Vassal of our Portugese Bretherin! We ignore him for now although the time of the Portugese may be short lived.

We popped a few GSs this segment which we used to build a few academies. My feeling is we need several strong science sities.

As we get closer to our Crusades, let's check techs

JustE0002.jpg

Doing just fine although the Celtics may need some watching, however the Celtics and French are having their own personal Holy Wars!

As the time approaches for teh Divine Chastisement of the Aztec Sins, the Diplomacy screen

JustE0003.jpg

We load up only part of our army.

JustE0004.jpg

And head off to the Filth of Montezuma, looking to rid the world of those vial Sacrificial Altars!

JustE0005.jpg

We beat Monty like a dog, quickly capturing the closest city.

JustE0007.jpg

We then moved onto his Capital, which is the Hindu Holy city

JustE0008.jpg

And burned it to the ground! But still Monty does not see the true faith (perhaps because he has none in his cities!).

We moved across the continent, killing all Aztecs in our way!

JustE0011.jpg

And pretty soon

JustE0012.jpg

These Heathens breed like Maggots! The hand of the true faith shalt be busy here, the is much to right in this world.

We finish Monty's cities on this land mass, leaving only Wang on the Western part and who's master is the evil Japanese leader.

While we gear up our Naval forces to invade the last Aztec city which is on another land mass, this interesting item pops up.

JustE0014.jpg

Ahhh. The Judaists see how evil Aztecia is. Which is odd as Brennus owns the AP and he is Buddhist. Nevertheless, all shall die soon enough.

JustE0015.jpg

We also make a pretty good trade with Joao

JustE0016.jpg

And the Final deathblow ending the inhumane horrors of the Aztec Human sacrifice religion

JustE0017.jpg

we simply raze this last city.

We readjust civics, looking for a little more beaker action while we restructre our economy a bit (at 30% slider).

We saved there!

Corporation next for the extra trade route which should help since we have some intercontinental trade routes with those former Aztec cities.

Tech next?

Well, we have steel/rifling and with the UU I think we can afford to divert to Scientific Method and Communism for thatn desperately needed State Property.

Also, which heathens are the biggest threat to Mankind!

I say a fierce Dual action attack versus Wang using the existing army from the Aztec war and built a new modern army to attack the Japanese mainland. Hopefully the French and Celtics will continue their stagnating Holy war.

YAY a update. Nice job opening a can of WHOOP @$$ on monty:goodjob:

Nice round. You should try to hit Brennus or Wang next, but make sure that Wang doesn't have time to get to Astro. You've got nearly 40 turns as of now, but you'll have to fend off the rest of the Jews. Brennus, on the other hand, controls the AP, and could easily end it with a "Stop the war against Brennus" resolution... :/

Techpath should definately be a communism Beeline. SP should knock your slider up 2 or 3 notches, and you may even get a free GSpy, which you can settle, or build Scotland Yard with, if you need the EP over the beakers that badly.

Also start spamming some missionaries. I don't think it is possible to get somebody to convert to your religion if not at least 1 ctiy shares your religion, right?
