Does anyone have any concept art for a Roman solider during the nopoleonic era, or does anyoen have ideas about what it should be like, it seems easier to think up a modern legionare than it does the nopoleonic one lol, what do people think

The time it takes for you to get a Napoleonic Roman Legion is the time it takes for Xen to see this thread.

Oh Dear. Be Carefull what you wished for. Xen will be here momentarily.

Honestly, that guy has a built in alarm that goes off whenever some one says the word 'Rome'.

well im glad cus im in the UK and its fast aproaching 2moro i may at some point consider sleep and never find out till the morning lol

I think you might have to. But its only 9:30 PM Eastern (is it standard or daylight now anyway?), so you might still have a chance.

Not enough change, IMHO. Nothing seems to be different except now he has leather greaves (now kinda looks like a cowboy), a backpack, and a musket. But it's a good start...

Xen's on holdiay in the UK, so I don't expect he'll be popping in to see this soon. That explains his whole AVE BRITANNIA! Title.

BTW, Xen is working on a Rome in the 1300s scen with me, so expect to see that too.:D

Ditch the Heavy armor and replace it with an overcoat.... Good Paint Skills

Oh yes.. I forgot. By this time the Romans probably would have developed Pants Technology.. I think he should have pants.

but why what good are pants, this is italy we are talking about you try going to italy and wearing trousers, your legs would drop off or melt, i remember when i went to sicily i made the mistake of going out in my jeans one day, my god that was bad, shorts for the rest of the holliday i told myself, now shorts make you look like a buy scout so it has to be the skirt/kilt thing doesnt it, now this is rome, must have armour, look at the WW1 man that was made even he had armor, at a distance it could prob stop one of the lead round musket balls anyway,
come one have some imagination this is rome, i want a roman, not the old guard

I know its a meditaranian climate, but doesn't it get cool enough for pants in the winter? Also, you have to expect a Roman Rifleman to journey into cooler climates. I would give him pants.

I would drop the chest armor (doesn't do much against bullets anyway), and give him a coat similar to the Rifleman. The helmet makes perfect sense, though, as the most comment injury was head injury in the American Civil War (that's why later wars had soldiers with helmets again). The trick is to blend the helmet and uniform together to look like they fit, and look Roman. I probably would keep the crest.

im gonna fight for the armour lol......listen a round lead musket ball would not penetrate iron plate armour at 300 yards surly, the lead would either bounce off or flatten itself, fine i can go for trousers i will try put something together soon its easy enough in paint, o and i stole the crest and leather boots off a french solider of the time thought it worked out nice except the blackness of the boots are out of place...

ok some changes

I always thought a Rifleman represented Civil War era. In that case, your dealing with a mini ball out of a rifled musket, which is similar enough to a modern rifle.

Actually, at the beginning of the Civil War, there were soldiers who used steel chest plates. And they did indeed protect against the minie balls at "average" combat distances. However, they couldn't do much against canister and any kind of shrapnel. But they were also unnecessarily cumbersome and most soldiers who had them (and they had to supply themselves with these with their own money) simply tossed them to the side of the road.

So there's no reason to think that the Romans wouldn't have upgraded to steel plating by this time if they chose to keep plating at all, which I doubt they would.

Look, ross, if Iron armor stopped musketballs the armies would have equiped their troops with iron armor, now wouldn't they?

As I said, the plating does stop musket and minie balls at those distances. The problem is that they do little against artillery, and then there's the fact that any other part of the body is still vulnerable. Essentially, their weight is what makes them useless. Soldiers on the move marching many miles in a day cannot be held down by a fifty-pound chest plate when it's benefits are marginal.

On another point though, why does everyone always base it on the "legion" style? There were so many different kinds of outfits for Roman soldiers... many of which would be more practical in the modern world. I suppose, however, that they're not as recognizably Roman.

for your infomation an imperial romans kit weighed about 60lbs a british royal marine in the falklands war carried 120lbs so the weight is a silly argument, the kit your american soliders carry in afgan is far heavier than any roman or even a medieval knight

goldflash, silly comment.......if terrorist planes could crash into sky scrapers then you would all put sam sites on the top of buildings wouldent you!!!!!

Dom Pedro......ok fine draw something then

and on the artillary point......nothing in that era could stop canaster shot etc so the point is not valid.....
armour.protects agsinst your bayonette your sword and if your lucky it will bounce your bullett too.........
german ww1 stormtroopers loved there armour, and it nearly gave them the avantage they needed to win too......

id like to see nopoleon march his line infantry up to my roman fire a few vollies and watch them do nothing then in amazement watch the romans plow through the french with there swords leading the way.......... like most nopoleonic battles concluded with anyway........

how come i have no support with this, everyones a critic, fine we will just have 2 dress all romans in nice prussian infantry uniforms or equivelent and make them all the same, now wont that be wonderful
