could you be alittle more discriptive Rufus,
here is one with kilt added again
as the scots regements all wore kilts so its not that far fetched

also strac's one would need more deatil on the jacket as the nopoleonic era had a flamboyance about it, evryone tried to out do eacch other on how nice you could make your unifourms look.........
look at hussars for instance.......much consideration was taken for style and beauty

I like number 4, only with the "kilt", for a little Roman Character, and maybe with yellow details on the jacket, remenicient of the lightning designs on the Imperial Scutum.

This way its not weighed down, realistic, yet harping back to the good old imperial legions. Napoleonic times were the re-birth of large Empires, and mainly infantry battles, so I could definitly see Rome going to the Legions for inspiration, but without compromising their ability to manouver. In Vietman and the Gulf soldiers have ditched armour to avoid heat casualties. And in Napolionic times Manouver, both tactical and strategic was more important than limiting a few casualties. Remember these guys advanced by walking up to an enemy who was volley fireing at them. Not because they were stupid but because of the importance of formation and manouver.

hmmmm though saying that, i once saw a program how they tested chainmail with a leather tunic underneath and it would stop a "armour peicing" english longbow arrow......but i suppose its not the same as a bullet....

IIRC, Longbow arrows don't actually pierce French steel, that was a myth.

BTW, I tried to add a strip of armor down the middle and make it look like buttons. It didn't come out too well, but I hope it gives you can idea.

I like the armor on the sholders, and I think the kilt looks cool as well.

Actually, I think the "kilt" looks good. I mean, the Scots still used the kilts for quite some time into the 19th century, didn't they? Or was that only dress attire?

Either way, I think that you could easily go with something resembling the tunic of a velites for the torso.

Kilts were definitely combat attire in Napoleon's day; can't say for certain now. And I agree on the "kilt" for this trooper.

Just for the record, I definately like the 6th attempt the best. I would also loose the Gladius, since it doesn't make any sense. Also, the Gladius was no longer the weapon of choice by the time of collapse.

BTW, I was thinking that this looked a lot like a "Musket Infantry", more than a Civil War time period "Rifleman". So, using MS Paint, I added the head and skirt of the Legion to a Rifleman to see what it looked like.

...Now he kinda looks like a woman. I mean, combining the kilt with the jacket makes it look like some woman's business suit.:undecide:

I know, but we're not talking about the real thing, which looks nothing like a woman, we're talking about the roman in the stylish woman's business suit.;)

I say nix the Kilt. Fifth Version is the Best. Also, we should keep the Gladius or we'll never hear the end of it from Xen.

Lol, you're kinda right. Like I said, it was just a half-hearted attempt. If I were actually designing a Roman soldier for that time, I wouldn't make it look like that anyway.

BTW, I still stand by my oppinion that it doesn't need a Gladius. Rome has had parts of its history without it, and I don't think the Fulminata has one (so Roman flavor units don't need them). It would make sense to have it brought back for trench fighting, but a bayonett works perfectly fine for this time period. Aside from this, Rome has had periods without the Gladius (Early Romans used Spear, Late Imperial legions used a Longer sword, why couldn't this guy use a bayonett?).

IMO, a naplonic Roman lgion would look a good deal more like the mounted Dragoons- who were very Roman in uniform anyway, on foot, and not as fancy, and of course armed with guns, as well as tyhier Gladius' :)

mabey I'll invest some time in making some concept art
