Hey, I am trying out ROTK IV and I am finding out that it is very different than number II. I noticed that in III they went to the idea of cities instead of provinces....ok, looks uglier, but I guess it is more realistic. They also expanded from just foot troops to multiple crossbows, calvary, battering rams, and catapults.

Does anyone have any good tips or know of a website that does? I have found two websites that may be of help, www.gamefaqs.com , and I can't remember the URL to the other right now. Need help learning this game! :)

Ask the questions and I'll try to answer. One does play it from time to time. :) Although my last game was a long while ago....

A few useful tips (I hope) : -

When defending, I find dropping boulders fr top of city walls onto the enemy units trying to scale the walls to be very fun. :D And effective.

When attacking, cavalry is useless when the battle takes place around the city walls. Cavalry units cannot scale the walls and mostimes only waiting to be hit by boulders as they attk the city gates.

Luoyang is the hardest city to attk. In the city walls battle setup, advantage is heavily with the defenders.

Can't think of more.... Actually too lazy to think of more.

Yeah, definitely more realistic. In ancient China, the heart of each province or commandery was the provincial capital, the seat of the area's elite.

After a night's sleep, a few more tips : -

If you want to build weopans, you'll need to build up the tech of the city where the weopans're to be built. AFAIK, you'll need 20, for xbow, 40 for strong xbow, 60 for ram, 80 for auto-xbow, 100 for catapult. Or something like that, can't remember all the details.

If you have a catapult, bring it with you to beseige a city and all the defenders will come down out the walls to fight you, saving you all the hassle of scaling the walls. If they don't, you can just use your catapult to hit them fr far and they won't ever retaliate since they can't come down the walls.... :D So if you have a catapult, you can bring your cavalry along too.

9 times out of 10, the battle will take place around the city walls. ;) Rare is the field battle.

Remember to do search with an officer. Now a search will take place over a whole region (usually 5-6 cities at once). As usual, purpose to find items and recruit/unlock officers.

I think cities along rivers are more prone to floods, so need to build up dams.

Remember to train troops. As usual.

In IV, the best thing to do is corner a governer in a province with no retreat, batter the gate, and select DUEL, IF you have leaders with high combat abilty AND the archery special.

Zhang fei doesn't have it, so sometimes cowards run from him and escape, causing a draw, but LuBu Does have it, so is invincable in duels when player controlled (wins 99%).
With this tactic, you capture the city, ALL the opposing generals, the opposing leader, all their troops as well!

I'll add more to this later.

Am I missing something here...? I had ROTK4 for PS, and the game was just bad... Did I not know how to play or something? Battles were tedious and mind numbing. If I attacked with small army, enemy had a small army. If I built up a HUGE army, they had one too. Those battles just took maybe 20 minutes to complete. All too often, I found myself alone with nothing begging for something off another AI controlled player. Sending the "Raging Hordes" to do some dirty work worked never. If I layed pits and traps in the field, the enemy just went around them...

RoTK is not for everyone, floppa. :D Maybe you aren't one of the destined few.... :p This game needs a lot of patience and background knowledge (which officers to go for).

Although I do think RTK4 is boring and too many battles only take place around city walls. Now RTK7, OTOH, is an altogether different ballgame. ;)

One thing I noticed is fire is very very useful in a field battle. If you have zhuge liang in a battle and fight against overwhelming odd, try setting up fire (any direction), but make sure that you have space to flee behind you, and then after the fire got bigger change the wind direction towards the enemy, in a couple turn usually your enemy won't have any space to run and you can pick on the remaining units with ease. The hard thing with this strategy is rain & random change of wind direction, so sometimes you may need to clear the weather as well.

I have it, but can't get it all worked out. I hear it's quite good if you take a minute or twenty to learn it, lol.

Romance of the Three Kingdom, now thats MY game! ;)

I have not missed anyone of them since II. Call me an addict but I actually have most of KOEI's game, 3 Kingdoms, Nobunaga's Ambitions, Unchartered Water, Liberty or Death and many others. :D

I think I can say I am those few who actually get the original Japanese version (especially Nobunage series) and buy a Japanese dictionary because of these games.

Thanks K-D. I found that site a little while back, it has a lot of good information.

Use Alcibiaties of Athenae's trick, but use it with a battering ram, which you can develop with investment in technology. Saves lots of time and your troops won't get as many huge rocks dropped on them. Personally, out of the Romance series from Koei, I like V better. More realistic combat system with each general having his own seperate army. Also, you get to be crowned emperor.
