Rome Victory Type(s)

Mind you I speed for any BNW difficulty up to king, as that's what I played.

Rome is really versatile, but their UA seems to have far greater effect at wider gameplay.

Conquering your neighbours with the Legion, option to build a road with Legions to your if its rough terrain or your units will travel slow, if your gold can afford it, conquer a good city and you have a connection :P

Balistas in their peak time are really good, 2 more base damage means 2+200% =6 more strength vs cities, more with an early general from the honor tree.

If not going early warmonger, Tradition has benefits for going more expansionist early, faster worker speed, city connection bonus, building construction bonus.

I think the most UA benefit comes out from high production on regular buildings, the UA can speed up the other cities quite a bit (25%).

Seems to be fairly good for getting national wonders, but you gotta watch the build orders :P.

I think Domination/Cultural/Diplomatic victories are all possible, Science as well but heavily dependant on the map (mountains = observatory, growth vs production)

If its like a larger map size, early warmongering seems less beneficial with more civs as you'll obsolete the units. Unless it's like a small contintents map with close neighbours or a big resource gain.

Rome seems to have been much talked about recently.
I have always loved this civ, because there is no reason for you to play them in any one particular way. The UA can / will benefit any play style, and any VC.

you only need to do a little planning, to get the buildings in the capitol.

I tend to go Liberty start -> wide. I usually would not plant more than 7 total cities (maybe less).
They are just fine for domination, in that case consider planting fewer cities, and just take them from the AI instead. I am pretty sure the building bonus applies to puppets as well, so its not a bad idea to have gold buildings in the capitol. Basically, you will want almost every building possible in the capitol.

they can be played peaceful / wide. Just land grab as much lux as you can, and defend you lands. Trade as much as possible as always and build for food / growth / science.

I have never pursued a CV with rome, but there is no reason they could not do it.

They are just fine as a Tall civ with a tradtional start, just remember to get buildings in the cap first. It still adds up to earlier buildings, earlier National wonders, etc.

Rome always seems a bit wasted to me if you don't use their UUs.

After that war, however, you can go pretty much anyway you choose, but given that you've spent time and resources accumulating an army and getting XP on it, it seems a shame not to go for domination. After all, a unit that isn't warring is just a -gpt (well, the Legions can build roads, but you get what I mean).

The UA goes nicely with this, as your puppeted cities can start contributing to your economy faster as they start copying Rome, and you can use war-winnings to rush build stuff in Rome, knowing you are getting more bang for your buck.

I think I agree that Rome is best suited for war. Expand as much as possible and the UA will increase.

Towards the end if the situation arises, you can audible into an alternate win condition.

Depends on the setup.
Below emperor + epic/maraphone speed -> good for early domination victory.
Immortal+, normal speed -> good for nothing.

One topic is not much talked no matter how you look at it.
And I still think that people generally overrate Rome.

Well if you HAD to play them on Immortal+ how would you use them?
