Odd. I found Russia comparatively easy due to the availablity of horse archers and those excellent AP units. I always found France a pain because you are surrounded by Milan, the HRE, Spain, England, and Denmark may chose to get in on it if they manage to take the Netherlands.
Novgorod and Kiev's challenges are their relatively poor income and trade potential, and the high cost of even decent units (which mostly include mounted units). Even if you manage to conquer the Baltic states right up to the Polish border, those settlements take a long time to develop into something useful. And of course there is the problem of any decent Russian empire's enormous size to contend with.
What do you think, which are the easiest and hardest factions to play in M2TW?
Without question, the hardest faction in the game (in SS) is the Kwarezmians. Your entire game is essentially built around getting ready for the Mongol Horde, and only by the grace of God will you not be gangraped by the Fatimids and Turks before then.
The easiest is probably the French, English, or Danish. Their political position is excellent, their unit roster is excellent, and their land is both fertile and productive. A game with any is yours to lose.
