Rr

It helps you make sure you get the 100% RR bonus when delivering freights (but there are better ways to achieve that: read the 'phantom roads' thread by samson at Apolyton).

IMO samson is the best civ2 player of all times.
Remember that he has won the game with ONE city size ONE
:goodjob:
Also remember that he is the analyst who discovered the 'key civ' (you minimize your research costs if you give techs to that civ) and the 'beaker count' (how the game calculates the number of beakers required for next tech)... and many other useful details.

That is why I didn't give you the link to 'phantom roads', because I wished you to use the 'search' engine at Apolyton. Do it! Type "samson" and search the civ2 strategy forum! You will find dozens of very interesting threads.
I bet you thank me afterwards (and I shall give you the link to 'phantom roads', if you really don't manage it :crazyeye: )

Also around cities it boosts the shield production...

Though why they'd cover anything outside of cities, i don't know...

La fayette je vais te répondre en français peut-être tu seras plus gentil :p
J'ai cherché avec le moteur de recherche "samson" mais ça ne me donne pas de threads dans les resultats :(

i searched samson in the forums but it didnt give me any thread results or anything usefull... maybe i didnt searched right

i went in the apolyton forum and then i searched

i am the only one who find apolyton very laggy ?

Lafayette si tu parles francais ça serait bien une partie de civ2gold j'ai plein damis francophones.

we accept english people too eh, and by the way, is there any civ2 legend here who would like to play someday? i dont know who is good and whos not id like to get kicked by someone really good =D

1) Je suis toujours gentil

1.1) Voici le lien pour les 'routes fantômes':
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66560

1.2) Here is the method to use the 'search' function at Apolyton:
Just under the name 'Apolyton', you find 'search' written in blue.
You click and get a new screen where you can choose between keywords and user name. You choose 'user name' and type 'samson' (you can then for example specify that your search be concentrated on civ2 strategy forum and posts from last year).
This is exactly how I found the link to 'phantom roads' for you.

2) AFAIK I am the only player who has ever won the ww2 scenario, playing as French

heh i wasnt a member of apolyton forums so thats why the searches always failed :p

I found how do the phantom roads work :)

- Do you guys cover the world with RR ? Or just build "the" RR to link all your cities?

If you follow samson's advice, you give a high priority to building a short RR between your SSC and the appropriate 'station' nearby, and you build more RR when you have time (except that you hurry up if you are at war because a good RR network is very helpful).

(besides, there is much to be learned if you read the so-called 'Great Library' = thread #2 on top of the strategy forum)

Try the Game Of The Month, where you will compete with several "legends" like La Fayette and Smash (also Canadian?) and others. Or try the MultiPlayer section, or even the Democracy Game.

je parle un peu...

Ok :) Isn't Shadowdale good? I never heard of him in the forum, but he still has the highest score?

If the RR doesn't follow the phantom road, but links all my cities, will I gather the Railroad bonus with my little camel?

smash is canadian (Vancouver), and I can tell you he's good :) .
I have never played with shadowdale, but IIRC starlifter used to say he was the best during BC years (well, perhaps not quite as good as samson or solo, but who is? ;) ).
BTW solo has just managed to land in 241AD :goodjob:

First pass, I build RR through the core of the island to link the cities for instant travel. Second pass I go back and try to optimize for RR trade bonus. "Covering the world" is something the AI does with Engineers when it has nothing better to do. I guess by that way the programmers hoped they would get the trade bonus without having to calculate exact paths. It makes them vulnerable to invasions that can use RR to spread out instantly and conquer many cities in one turn.

If the RR doesn't follow the phantom road, but links all my cities, will I gather the Railroad bonus with my little camel?

The RD/RR bonus increases both the one-time bonus on delivery as well as the ongoing trade arrows ONLY if it follows the "optimum path". There are several attempts at defining this path; if you have an Explorer you can usually use GoTo to discover it (before RR). Just Road wherever the Explorer goes, then RR later when you get the tech. In some wierd cases the "optimum path" one way is not the same as the "optimum path" the other way. That is why the "phantom road" is so powerful - you plant a "station" just outside your SSC radius to minimize the amount of path.

Not 'some wierd cases'.
In fact the optimum path one way is the same as the optimum path the other way only when you can draw a straight line between source and destination city (which means travelling exactly North or North East or East...etc, without any lake on the path)

This is perfectly true, but samson has discovered that the continuing trade route was based upon the optimum path between source and destination city and the one time bonus was based upon the optimum path between destination and source city (which shows once more that the programmers of civ2 were really smart  )

Could I have a traduction of this, send me a PM

And by all this (previous posts) you mean that a RR that links 2 cities but doesn't follow the optimum way, I don't get the RR bonus? Is this a bug or something? :crazyeye:

That is correct, and not a bug. The bonus is a bonus, not something you get without effort. You need to spend time and Eng/Settler effort making it happen, but it can be powerful. Some Early Landing records are based on getting a quick optimum RD/RR link with a nearby foreign civ.

Could I have a traduction of this,
