I'm under the impression that League isn't really played t all outside the Rugby Commonwealth countries. Can someone enlighten me? I for instance, and despicte being a very interested fan of Rugby Union, never watched any Rugby League at all.
But Union is one of my favourites sports. I can't wait for the WC in a few months.

Rugby Sevens on the other hand lacks those forward clashes and it almost looks another game. It can be entertaining, but I take Rugby Union any day. But sevens is where the game is more balaned worlwide. Much more teams can fill a competitive team in sevens, because, well, first of all they only have to find half of the players, and also there are many countries where some positions are hard to fill. For example, Portugal is in the top 10 in Europe, but it would get decimated by any of the teams in the 6 nations. We have guys to run, but we don't have any decent forwards. In sevens though our team could play a dcent game against say Scotland and even win.

It's surprising where they play League these days. It's always been fairly popular in the South of France and a team from Russia played in the Challenge Cup competition in January this year (Leigh beat Locomotiv Moscow quite heavily) along with 3 teams from France.

never seen Rugby, actually I dont understand it
I'm no authority on Rugby but maybe this will be easy to understand...

1. The primary means of scoring is similar to a touch-down in American Football, except if you let go of the ball you fail. So a touch-down won't score any points: which is why players ussually dive across the line clinging to the ball. The ball must touch the ground.

2. You may not throw the ball forward! You may only pass the ball backwards and this increases the amount of contact in the game.

3. An alternative means of scoring is by dropping the ball and kicking it between the posts, called a Drop-Kick.

That is by no means the complete rules, but those 3 points should be easy to understand and allow anyone to follow a game :)

There are plenty more rules but they aren't worth anything without the above 3 :p

I find club League better than club Union and international Union better than international League.
I never liked Rugby as a spectators sport until I saw International Union :)

thanks Stormbind! :goodjob:
it sounds fun for playing with friends in the park but a little bit rude, isnt it?

I always liked the old style of injury diagnosis (started watching rugby in the '70s). Stand the guy up and get him to stamp his foot on the ground. If he passes out, its broken

Rugby is a tough sport, no doubt, but it's reputation for violence is a little unfair. There have been some ugly incidents (I'm sure most rugby followers will remember Johan Le Roux biting Shaun Fitzpatrick's ear) but at the top level it's quite clean.

I prefer Union myself. The international game is quite competitive these days, with six teams probably having the ability to win the World Cup. Below them, there is a second tier of countires who have some really exciting matches between them and, hopefully, will eventually be able to challenge NZ, Aus, England etc.

US rugby is quite strong but has been on the wane a bit recently. Ditto for the Canadiens, who have lost a lot of their most expereinced players. The strongest team in the Americas currently is Argentina. They have a chance to do really well at the WC and, if they play to their potential, could make the semis. Just for everyone's information I'll post a list of who is competing in the WC as well as who was in the last league one:

Union:
England
Scotland
Ireland
Wales
France
Romania
Italy
Georgia
Namibia
South Africa
Japan
Tonga
Fiji
Samoa
New Zealand
Australia
USA
Canada
Uruguay
Argentina

League (from memory, may be one or two errors :) )
New Zealand
New Zealand Maori
Australia
Fiji
Tonga
Samoa
Cook Islands
Papua New Guinea
South Africa
England
Ireland
Scotland
Wales
France
Lebanon
Russia

As you can see, Union is more global and the league people really have to scratch the barrell to get 16 teams (Lebanon was made up almost entirely of Austrlian Lebanese, New Zealand Maori etc.)

Not sure I understand how it could be considered rude

There is a lot of physical contact but as pointed out by others, it can be a clean game (i.e. when played at the higher levels) - I would suggest that club level is just a bunch of thugs not interested in the sport-side of the game :(

The rubgy tackle is below the shoulders - getting this right takes practice and deserves attention because their's no helmet to protect your oponent :p

When you pass the ball backwards, you can throw it to your left/right - you don't have to bend down and pass it between your legs; as seen at the start of a game of American Football.

Incidentally, I think you start a game of Rugby by kicking the ball to your oponents - a long way down the field but memory is somewhat vague for some reason... brb, need some coffee :(

From what I remember about rugby it's a cross between football and.. Well.. football. Then again, we used to play it on the soccer [ football ;) ] field, and I believe when made modifications due to the sources we had.

Perhaps it was because I was in fifth grade the last time I played it, but I remember it being a very dangerous how we played. I got a concussion the first time I ever played and I broke my foot the last time. It was a lot of fun, though.

It's played on a field that resembles American Football, with two tall posts and horizontal bar at each end.

I think at one time, Rugby was better known as Rugby Football.

=========

Soccer Football, or a similar game, was played by Saxon peasants! Way, way back in the mists of time... :p

Rugby Football was invented in England when a Soccer Football player picked up the ball and ran the length of the field! :crazyeye:

American Football was derived from a mixture of mostly Rugby Football but some Soccer Football rules, and first played between an American and Canadian university.

Thus we see that all games have common heritage! However, all games have evolved considerably from when they were innovated so it cannot be said that one is more evolved than another.

I used to love rugby when I lived in Australia, but in Canada its pretty hard to find on TV. Cricket too.:(

Football was originally played with a pig's bladder:crazyeye: I can understand the frustrations of the football player at Rugby School who got p*ssed off with kicking it around and just picked it up and muscled his way to the end:D Hence, Rugby football was born, named after the town of its origin. League seems to be played in Northern England and Union in the South; not too sure on when or why the schism was. American football was born because the Americans like to be different;), and I think a similar political environment bred Australian Football. Celtic Football is Rugby with really crazy rules:crazyeye: So, the different types of football, in order of 'manliness':

Rugby Football Union
Rugby Football Sevens
American Football
Australian Football
Rugby Football League
Celtic Football
Football ('Soccer Football')

I'm sorry for this outburst, but that (edit)... sorry, i STRONGLY disagree with your list.

For starters: Do not put American football anywhwere near the top. They only wear protective gear to save them from everyone elses protective gear. Take all the padding off and see how they would play.

Secondly: I have played a lot of Rugby sevens, you hardly even get tackled. It's more a fitness game.

At the top would be Rugby, Australian Rules Football, then league, then daylight. No sports come close to those 3. I recognise that you wouldn't have seen much Aussie Rules, but let nme assure you that is one very tough game.

@medwynn: Super 12 Rugby is club rugby, and no club League in the world comes close to it.

BTW: All Black vs England this Saturday
Should be a good game
Only cause NSW didn't get into the final 4 (i couldn't even type that without laughing...)

It's going to be a sad day for England on Saturday... and the rest of the world are going to see exactly how good you sheeprooters are playing (i meant that affectionately :D )

You always do, Bose, I'm sure ;)

Should be a good match tomorrow. I'm bemused by Mitchell's reluctance to callup Cullen but Howlett should do a fine job. I can't wait.

Cheers for the link stormbind, but any more like that and Lefty will move it to the humour forum. ;)

"The All Blacks problems lie in the tight five, where England should have the upper hand, meaning New Zealand could be starved of ball."

Gold! Let tell you this... I've been watching the Kiwis play for the past 4 months and i honestly can't see England getting within 2 tries of them. Saying that, i haven't seen a whole lot of England of late...
