Hi! I had just an amazing idea: Civ4 in your pocket! I bought 2GB USB stick and downloaded Puppy Linux on it. Is it possible to install Civ 4 on the Linux? We'll need Wine and Prayaya in this maybe? If you have suggestions how to make Civ4 in your pocket version or other thoughts, please join the thread :)!

Nevermind. Civ 4 was too big for my 2GB USB -key since it need at least 1.8GB free harddrive space.

this is sort of a corny idea, and one that i had myself;p i didn't try very hard to make it work, but i can tell you that you need at least a 8GB drive, and also it would be nice if it supports USB3. in theory it should be possible... i would be interested in your results if you ever get a big enough drive.

I will be happy to get it going on Linux at all, my main laptop has died so I am trying to get it going on my netbook, but a few things left to try based on stuff at WineHQ.

I really don't want to go the hog of trying to get Windows 7 installed on my netbook.

Jeros, if you have a look in the Mac forum, you will find a thread there about using Wine to run CIV on a Mac by z0wb13. It spells everything out. I would imagine much would be the same to use Wine for CIV on Linux. Probably z0wb13 will be along soon to comment here.

I've had it running on linux for years. Is your problem installing it, or actually running it?

My guess is the latter. The big hangups for most people are installing all the d3dx9 stuff that wineHQ says (PlayOnLinux really makes that more painless), and perhaps most commonly you need to specifically download msxml3 and msxml3r separately and put them in your system32 folder (not your game folder). If you don't, the game will tend to crash whenever you load a save and often when trying to start a game.

Civ IV seems slightly slower for me on Linux, probably because it's a directx game (opengl games tend to run pretty well in Linux environments through WINE; very close to windows).

Steam version, playing, and it was probs what you said, as there seems to be a myraid of soloutions out there.

Just going to make a windows 7 install usb and put windows on it. The FPS loss would most likely make it a less fun experiance under linux anyway.

*sigh* Were it not for my PC gaming habit and outdated computers I could dump windows forever!

Before I got the big laptop working, I managed to get Civ 5 going ok tho, which was nice.

Is it possible to run civ IV in opengl? I don't know much about civ IV itself. If so you won't lose significant frames in linux, but WINE isn't very good with d3d stuff.

Let's change the question a little; what if I have two computers and I want to play same saves and mods in both computers. I want to use my 2GB USB stick. Is it possible to move the game folder to stick and run the game successfully in both coms? I already installed Civ4 BTS 3.19 to both. Both are Windows OS computers, Vista and 7. Thanks.
