This is similar to one of blid's succession games, The Farmers' Shuttle, a no cottage variant where we try to reach alpha centauri.

This time, I want to try it without lightbulbing either.

So the variant rules are:

1) We are not allowed to build cottages. Any captured cottages cannot be worked and must be pillaged.
2) No using great people to lightbulb techs.

We will play as a financial leader, William of Orange. Difficulty will be Emperor. I don't want to play with an archipelago map, instead something like custom continents or maybe one of the new map scripts. We will aim for a space victory. I am tempted to play on normal speed, but will do epic if that's what everyone prefers.

Keep the ridiculous new overseas maintenance costs in mind Sooooo. So if you plan on conquering much of the world, you might want to avoid continents.

Also, on Emperor, even with the slower tech pace, what's the plan? Espionage+settled scientists+extorted techs?

I wonder in the end how close this will be to the RBtS1 games. You may find out that Espionage is the best way to keep up in tech, and therefore prioritize that.

Finally - is the Great Wall Spy Bomb allowed?

We are going for space, so continents should be fine.

Think science will be OK. Should be able to work colossus coast before astronomy, and then head for electricity to work windmills, watermills and forest preserves. Also we can hire scientists, settle GPs, trade route income, set off golden ages, pointy stick research etc.

Finally - is the Great Wall Spy Bomb allowed?
No.

I'd love to join in on this one. My games tend to be heavy on bulbing and cottages, so this would be a fun challenge.

Unfortuantely, I'm in the USA from next Wednesday until the end of the month.

If you find yourself in need of a replacement in September I can sign up then.

Any which way, engaging lurking mode! Good luck!

Thinking about it, given the number of coastal cities intended - figure trade routes would be really useful in this game. Temple of Artemis and/or the Great Lighthouse could be fantastic, although probably very unlikely to secure either at emperor?

Sorry to see the cancel as this looked like an interesting lurk.

Not a sign up - I never played emperor...

I'll echo LK here. The idea is good. Actually, I already did something like it. We even weren't able to hire specialists. It worked on Prince level. It's the "Loomy" link on my sig.

Sooooo, I think if you step down to Monarch you'll get more interest.... What do you think about it? :deal:

LKendter, do you want to be a sixth player?

I already have 3 SGs (including SGOTM), along with 10 hour work days indefinitely, so I have to pass.

Not to mentioned I haven't had time to start RB pot luck...

OK, we can play at monarch, no problem.

So we've got 5 players now. LKendter, do you want to be a sixth player?

Either way, I'll roll a start tomorrow.

Oh, are you counting me in???

Sorry to let you down, but I have the same time issues LK is having. Unfortunately, my civ time dropped critically nowadays... I only have time to one-week turnsets SG's and RB events. I can lurk and post a lot at work, but at home, when I can play, I have almost no time..

In the best case, I can be an alternate. Sorry again...

I went for a Big_&_Small map, everything else standard.

With the variant I was hopeful for a coastal start, but alas we got an inland one. But it does have some gold!

I think we should move the settler to claim the gold. But that leaves one question: Which is more important, wines or the flood plain? I am leaning towards saving the flood plains and settling 1NE.

Will start tomorrow.

Since we can't build cottages, other sources of commerce maybe even more important. I vote for settle on FP.
