The saved game compression feature in 1.21f is really great! It can compress a 1.5 MB saved game to about 200 KB!

Just take a look at this screenshot

What a huge differerence for the same saved game! Good work Firaxis! Time to reload the save games and re-save them to save space....

yeah very nice Firaxis :goodjob:
I'll try it out.

As the forum admin, I bet that's a great thing! Hmm. Saved game storage drops to roughly 1/7 of the old number?

It doesn't have much effect on forum space usage actually, since people always zip their Civ3 saves before posting. Zipped saved games are a bit smaller than the compression provided by the game. :)

And I wasn't really thinking about storage on my own hard drive, but I guess some would have to think about that.

Well, now people can´t tell they "the saves take too much disk space" when they come here and tell about why they didn´t keep the save game when they had 2 leaders at once, multiple golden ages and conscript warriors beating elite modern armors.

Have you tried to zip a compressed sav? Is it bigger or smaller than an uncompressed zipped save? Just curious.

I certainly did. It's quiet interesting actually:

Great TF, now that the compressed games are only a tiny little bit bigger than zips, can`t we simply upload saves instead of zips????

I guess this is a trade-off between compression speed vs size.

Does it compress the autosaves, or just the games saves? If it does both, do you have to wait an appreciable time at the end of the turn while it compresses it?

And on a different tack - if you rename a compressed .sav file with a .zip extension, can you then open it with winzip? (I've seen that done before).

I loaded a saved game from version 1.17 and saved it.

Old size = 7647 Kb
New size = 721Kb

Great saving on my overcrowded disk drive.

:)

Auto saves are also compressed the same way.

What I REALLY found intersting in your screen shot was the file folder labeled as ScrollingBug-Patch V1[1].21f

Nothing special about it... One person said he has scrolling problem with the new patch so I downloaded the saved game to see if if I can dupe the problem. :)

I don't have problem with that. Just be sure to upload the save to the file server and not the forum server...
