Scariest Wars

One of the hardest lessons I've had to learn is the whole concept of 'preventing warfare with effective garrisons'. I've been burned a time or two when a border war popped up and my lone Infantry or Rifle wasn't enough to stop an AI with Cavalry.

These wars aren't scary, at least they haven't been yet, because the cities taken have been larger science farms and not core cities. Rails and artillery mean I get the cities back the next turn, whack the wounded and then begin to attack and raze just because the AI backstabbed me. And did a poor job of backstabbing, too! Not enough to really change the balance of the game, just enough to get me [pissed]!

Probably the one in my current story, which has been on hold for about 4 months now (both the game and the story). Still not sure how I'm going to get out of that one.

The one where the Americans invaded me in my first Emperor victory was pretty bad, too. Not sure I'd say scary, but definitely devastating. I was off in the east fighting the Iroquois and someone else with my Cavalry, when they invade with Cavalry and Riflemen on the other side of my empire. I had Musketeers, and not nearly enough of them. I lost a good 60-70% of my empire and only staved off defeat thanks to a couple great leaders and armies. IIRC I lost both armies to overwhelming odds, but not before I'd taken out the American offence enough to get peace. But a good half my cities were razed, including my capital.

This was way back, I was playing Korea on a large continental map, Emperor IIRC. I've just upgraded ~50 horsemen to knights and they're marching to my southern border to greet some Mayans. The core of my empire is relatively empty (really, it's empty) and immediately after I declare war (on the Mayans), they sign the Arabs to my east on their turn, and I was left cursing as the Ansars rode in on their turn. In numbers. To put things in perspective, it took about 3-4 turns for my knights to get from the Mayan border to the Arabic front.

Took me quite a few turns to clean that mess up. Wasn't fun.

EDIT: In retrospect, that would've been an amazing story chapter.

Sounds similar to my experience above. Good to see you around again. Any chance of your story continuing soon? I'll be resuming mine this weekend (i.e., before Monday 5 AM GMT), and finally getting back to S&T.

My story's been on hold for more than a year now! How time flies  I still lack the motivation at the moment, but the story will continue at some point in the future :)

oh wow, after the first 3 days I thought this thread would never get any replies

cool!

Probably in COTM7(?) - Austria. Surrounded on all sides by aggressive opponents, I'd never had an Emperor win, and I had a handful of Archers ready to invade Germany - and it was expand or be choked. So over the mountains they went.

Later on I'd encounter 30+-strong stacks of Spanish troops, headed by Infantry, and smack them down with a ton of artillery. (I was also dumb enough to forget about a Russian MDI parked right next to an unguarded city... but it's all history now.)

Somehow I managed to win that game with a Spaceship launch, having caught up in tech by capturing the GLib. It was a little war-heavy, so I was glad to be a Monarchy!!
