"You tell him that you dont believe him because he hasnt been puching his religion on you and cursing every religion under the sun and condemning everyone sinning in a 5 block radius"
Why would I tell him such stupid thing, and why should I believe such idiotic stereotypes ?
Anything I get to know about a person will add to my opinion or view of the person, and some is based on past experiences of other people with the same "attribute". I guess this is to get a rough picture of a person before you get to know them well. So, although my view of the person will be prejudiced at first, my view will change while I get to know them to be more accurate then the prejudiced view.
I wouldn't dream of ignoring anyone because they're religious, or anything like Option 1, but like most people I will be prejudiced, even if I do my best to not show it to them.
why do all Christians have that nutty fixed idea that atheists are anti-Christian?
I am anti-Jehovas Witnesses, anti-missionary (feed them lions!!!!! ), anti-preaching, anti-religion-in-school, but I have no problems at all with someone who believes in Jesus 'the oiled' and leaves others alone!
It's pretty obvious that we'd all give the Christian a chance. Honestly, it'd be difficult for anyone in a multi-religious area to go through life hating everyone who believed in a God. I'd hated everyone I knew minus two or three people.
Option #2. There is lots of good in Christianity, so I don't in general have a strongly adverse reaction to Christians... actually, the older I get, the more I start to feel that I actually should support them because they are the only ones speaking against many of the evils of the world.
If a friend tries to convert me, I might gently suggest to him to cut it off because I've heard it many times already. Most of the time this is enough... right on the street, I used to have a few rough words in store for a proselytizer, these days I just say "no thanks".
If they insist, and I have the time to spend... if they want their asses kicked, they've got it One has to realize that the average soul-hunter is not nearly as bright as the best Christians when it comes to a debate.
i, for one, wouldn't tell him that i don't believe him, but my closest anwser to what you provided is Option 2. i know lots of Christians who don't do condem every sinner within a 5 block radius. only a small fraction do.

people are free to try to convert people, unless the person they are trying to convert is forced to convert/tells them to stop. i'm only Anti-mixing Church and State, which is not anti-Christian. i have nothing against Christians. anyway, not all Christians think Athiests and secularists are anti-Christian. it's just that the ones who don't think that don't go around saying that they don't think that. kind of like how 70% of the country supported the War, yet anti-War rallies drew a hundred thousand people while pro-War rallies drew only 10 thousand at most. what i don't like is when some Christians think that Pro-Seperation of Church and State = Anti-Christian.
I'm not an atheist, but I don't like being tried to convert, either. I mean some Protestants think Catholics need to see the 'light' in this nation. I think we need another Inquisition just for those Protestants that really want to 'save' us.
Atheists, sane Protestants, other religous people, and agnostics are welcome to join in the Information Age Inquisition. edit: on the Catholic side of course
