What tech should I have by 2000? I can never seem to get past the Industrial Age! I just learned electricity in 1988 on my latest game. I don't think that's right.. lol

My adviser says we're technologically advanced.. I'm doing 540 turns every time. Is that it? Is this normal? HELP!

Thanks ;)

Welcome to our forum! [party] :band:   :bounce:

In my Emperor level game, I am researching Mass Production in 1375 AD, so it is possible. I would say that you probably are making common mistakes, such as not trading enough, researching top to bottom, not getting into a decent government and not building enough workers. Put a save up, and the nice people here will line up to help you.

In addition to the common mistakes listed by Overseer, another may be trying to have all buildings in every city. Each building costs maintenance per turn and, if too much gold is going to pay maintenance costs, there is little left over for researching techs.

Not every city needs a granary or a barracks or a temple, etc. Some towns should have no improvements at all.

Like Overseer said, post a save for us to look at. We all enjoy giving advice. :D

Sorry.. but... put a save up?

=P

In a game you're playing, make a manual save (ctl+s). In this forum thread click on "reply". Near the bottom of the reply screen, there is a button labeled "manage attachments". Click on that and then navigate to the save file you made. Click on that file, and it will upload to this thread so that other members can open it.

Do be sure to say if it's a Civ3, PtW or C3C file since we can only open files if we have that version of Civ. Be sure to load the manual save, as auto-save files are too large.

Also (and I'm not sure since it's been awhile since I've uploaded a file), I don't think the attachment will show if you "preview" the thread, but it will show up after the post is complete. :)

The important thing is not reaching a certain tech level by a certain year. The important thing is to keep up with, or ahead of, your opponents.

From game to game, how quickly the overall tech level advances depends a lot on what your opponents do. If they get involved in a lot of wars, their investment in tech will slow down, they will trade less tech, and that means you have less opportunities to trade for their tech. On the other hand, if you end up with several opponents who are Scientific, and they stay out of wars and trade frequently with each other, the overall tech level of the game will zip right along.

Many years ago on my first game, I was "advanced" yet I didn't get into the Industrial Age until 1896. Yet, last year, I was able to advance into the Middle Ages before 1 AD.

Ah, Civ3, when you had to research almost all of the techs in an era before moving on to the next one.

My first game had everyone in the industrial age until the 21st century. (The final result was a histographic loss.) :p

What techs you have will depend largely on the difficulty level: high-level games tend to move quickly because there you have to trade with the AIs. At lower levels the AI isn't a powerful researcher, so you have to do all of your own work...and you're always ahead, so the techs are very expensive.

The important thing is to keep up with, or ahead of, your opponents.

Exactly. You want to be able to at least defend yourself if they decide to war with you. My first game ended close to 2050, but I was still in the late industrial age, but it didn't matter because I had tanks and no one else did.
