Is there a way to determine which freebie tech you get with every new age or is it always random? I like Scientific for this purpose alone (besides the cheap libraries, universaries, and research centers) if you get that freebie tech at the right time and if you could pick the one you want can you imagine the rewards you'd rake in if you were the only one who had that tech???

It is random, although earlier versions almost always gave you the same tech (I think the one that is nearest the top on the Science Advisor screen).

You always get Monotheism when you enter the Middle Ages, Nationalism in the Industrial Ages, and Rocketry in the Modern Ages. They don't change, or at least not to my knowledge.

In PTW 1.27 the tech is random.

Do you always get a free tech or can you sometimes go without? 'Cause I've been playing as the Ottomans lately and I almost never seem to get a free tech when I enter the Middle Ages. I used to nearly always get Monotheism in the past, but then I didn't play as them for a really long time and now they get nada.

I think it's the cheapest. Though if some of them are discovered already the cheapest may change. It could also be random.

It is absolutely NOT always Nationalism, Monotheism and Rocketry.

I don't know if there's an equal chance on all techs, but I'm certain that you can get all of them. I play as scientific all the time, often with scientific AI's, and the tech speed is awesome due to the fact that we all get different free techs.

I don't see why you wouldn't get a free tech as scientific in certain caeses, to answer FlakJacket. You have to watch carefully when you enter the Middle Ages. You MUST have a free tech by then as the Ottomans.

Since 1.21, the free tech is more randomly chosen so you won't get Monotheism/Nationalism or Rocketry each time (though you can get other techs in earlier patches too, but the chances of that happening are very slim, about 1% IIRC).

However, as far as I've experienced so far, the chances still aren't equal for each tech to be picked as free tech, for example I've only gotten Medicine once so far on 1.21+, and also tend to get Feudalism more often than the other two medieval techs.
But that's just what I've experienced so far, could be a coincidence of course. :)

It gets even better. If you get one tech (say monotheism) when you advance to the middle ages and there is another scientific civ in the game he'll get either feudalism or engeneering when he advances to the MA. And if there's a third he'll get the remaining one. With a little bit of nifty trading and 2 AI scientific civs in the game you can get all 3 first tier MA techs in one turn... :D

hehe, fellow slaveholder... ;)

it works fine.

Yeah, this works great! I'm playing a game for the HoF right now and there are 2 scientific AI civs in it. Guess which AI's get to be pet civs until the end of the game? ;)

You guys are devious :)

Scientific is my new favourite trait - it rocks at all levels, especially deity. :D

A little 'trick' if you are several techs behind is to wait for 1 civ to reach a new age. Trade lots of gpt and gold to them for the techs and trade back your free tech to them for all your cash/gpt. Amazingly simple, amazingly effective. You can get screwed on this, but only if the first civ to a new era is a scientific one and you get the same tech as them and all the other civs are broke. Oh, and you need your Rep intact too. :)
