Screen Goes Black!!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem:
- Screen goes black then goes back to the desktop, sometimes the computer restarts.

I have an nVidia 6200 gForce graphics card with 256mb of memory and the latest drivers
2.8 GHz processor, 1 GB of ram, plenty of free hard drive space.
The latests patches.
My laptop that has less recources than my desktop runs the game just fine (knock on wood).

Can anyone help?? As of this posting I am going to uninstall the game completely, run the defragmentor utility and then start over again.

this sounds more like a hardware issue - maybe your graphics card is overheating? does the computer make any strange noises before exiting the game?

That might very well be true ... I wouldn't say strange noises but a low whirring sound ... but it has always done that.

It does not go b lack when running other games, however, no other games put as much of a demand on my graphics card as CIV.

Is there anything I can do to help cool my computer? Is it possible that the heat has damaged my graphics card?

the whirling noise is from one of the fans in the computer running faster (and noisier) - which does indicate that it gets warmer inside.
You can try and see whether running the game while the PC casing is open helps - also sometimes dust gathers within the PC casing and makes the cooling fans less efficient - you could remove that.
Heat can damage a graphics card, though usually it shuts down before it is being damaged...
