RedTopJay- No, research does not have to be at 0%. It's just for the certain map conditions I was playing, I knew there would be enough huts. Because eventually I did get alphabet from a hut (buy this if you can, if you've already met a few commercial civs it should be cheap), so any research I would have done towards alphabet would have been wasted. If your not playing a huge pangea map, your not likely to find that many huts, so a 0% research approach, may not be the best (depends on difficulty level).
You could also try something like researching the cheapest tech that is available, so the huts will give you more expensive ones. That would get you more powerful techs, but not straight down 1 line (like the monarchy line).
