Hail everyone! Not much happening with turns 51 thru 60. I did manage to luck into another tech from a friendly village (Mathematics) and I settled another town (New York). I now have five small towns. My Income is 36g with Expenses of 36g (Science is 17g, Corruption is 19g – still high); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 95g. Three of the five towns have Spearmen. My Scout is waiting for a Galley to be built so he can travel to new lands. I have in production; a Horseman, Spearman, Worker, and two Settlers. My workers continue to work the land. Delos will expand in culture in one more turn. The other remaining civilizations have not come to my shores yet.

1750BC. Turn 51. Writing in 3 turns. Delos produced a Settler. My Scout reaches the village and they teach us Mathematics! Very nice!
1725BC. Turn 52. Writing in 2 turns.
1700BC. Turn 53. Writing in 1 turn.
1675BC. Turn 54. Writing complete. Map Making in 15 turns. Soled produced a Spearman. Town of New York settled on the coast with horses immediately available (southeast of Delos).
1650BC. Turn 55. Map Making in 14 turns.
1625BC. Turn 56. Map Making in 11 turns. My Scout has completed his entire trek around the island. I will move him to Washington in preparation of sailing to new lands.
1600BC. Turn 57. Map Making in 10 turns.
1575BC. Turn 58. Map Making in 9 turns.
1550BC. Turn 59. Map Making in 8 turns.
1525BC. Turn 60. Map Making in 7 turns.

Yes, expansion is key to this game at any level. Fill the land completely and road your tiles.

Do you have the silk connected? It is important to connect your resources.

Hail everyone! Turns 61 thru 70 saw some nice growth. I included three new towns with a forth to be settled in a turn or two (trying to fill the island). I am working quickly to finish my Galley and already have my Scout and Horseman in place to set sail. As I settle new towns the first unit I am producing is a worker for each (since I’m isolated and need to get the land improved). My Income is 39g with Expenses of 39g (Science is 19g, Corruption is 20g); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 95g. I’m looking forward to exploring new lands as this island is getting lonely.

1500BC. Turn 61. Map Making in 5 turns. Washington produces a Spearman. Delos cultural borders expand.
1475BC. Turn 62. Map Making in 4 turns. Delos produces a Horseman and it moves to Washington in preparation of sailing to new lands.
1450BC. Turn 63. Map Making in 3 turns.
1425BC. Turn 64. Map Making in 2 turns. New York produces a Worker. This gives me one worker per town at the moment.
1400BC. Turn 65. Map Making in 1 turn.
1375BC. Turn 66. Map Making complete. Iron Working in 6 turns. Paris and Soled produce Settlers.
1350BC. Turn 67. Iron Working in 5 turns.
1325BC. Turn 68. Iron Working in 4 turns.
1300BC. Turn 69. Iron Working in 3 turns. Delos produces a Settler. Towns of Boston and Philadelphia settled.
1275BC. Turn 70. Iron Working in 2 turns.

Hail everyone! Turns 71 thru 80 were disappointing. I had hoped to complete a Galley to start my journey to new lands but I wasn’t able to during this time frame. I did manage to complete two techs (Iron Working and Philosophy) and settle another town (Atlanta) bringing my total to eight. My Income is 46g with Expenses of 46g (Science is 21g, Corruption is 25g); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 95g.

1250BC. Turn 71. Iron Working in 1 turn.
1225BC. Turn 72. Iron Working complete. Philosophy in 6 turns. Town of Atlanta settled.
1200BC. Turn 73. Philosophy in 4 turns.
1175BC. Turn 74. Philosophy in 3 turns. New York produces a Spearman.
1150BC. Turn 75. Philosophy in 2 turns.
1125BC. Turn 76. Philosophy in 1 turn.
1100BC. Turn 77. Philosophy completed. Code of Laws in 8 turns. Soled produces a Horseman.
1075BC. Turn 78. Code of Laws in 7 turns. Delos produces a Horseman.
1050BC. Turn 79. Code of Laws in 6 turns. Boston and Philadelphia produce Workers.
1025BC. Turn 80. Code of Laws in 5 turns.

2 questions and a comment:

The questions:
1) Did you happen to get a free tech out of Philosophy? First one to Phil gets a freebie.

2) What are your sliders set at?

The comment: Don't know if you're aware of this, but 4 turns is the fastest possible research. Looks like you could run a slight deficit in your gpt and speed up research, if you wanted.

Have all of your cities build settlers if they aren't building something else. once those settlers make towns, have them construct defensive units, and then workers, or more settlers

Hail everyone! Thanks for the responses. My Science beaker is set to 100%. I did NOT get a free tech when I completed Philosophy. I'm playing Civ3 Vanilla if that makes a difference. The majority of my towns are producing Settlers and Spearman at the moment.

Hail everyone! Turns 81 thru 90 seemed dismal. I finally produced a Galley but from the southern most town. It’s in route to the north to pick up passengers. With any luck the second Galley will be completed soon. My Income is 51g with Expenses of 51g (Science is 24g, Corruption is 27g); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 95g. Still no sign of the other civilizations.

1000BC. Turn 81. Code of Laws in 4 turns.
975BC. Turn 82. Code of Laws in 3 turns. Atlanta produces a Worker.
950BC. Turn 83. Code of Laws in 2 turns.
925BC. Turn 84. Code of Laws in 1 turn. Boston produces a Spearman.
900BC. Turn 85. Code of Laws complete. Literature in 7 turns. Soled produces a Settler.
875BC. Turn 86. Literature in 7 turns. Delos produces a Settler.
850BC. Turn 87. Literature in 6 turns.
825BC. Turn 88. Literature in 5 turns.
800BC. Turn 89. Literature in 4 turns. New York produces a Galley.
775BC. Turn 90. Literature in 3 turns.

I admit that I've played very badly thus far but I've taken alot of notes to use in my next game. Thank you, everyone who has provided input to my game.

It's your first game. We all had one and most of us played that first game badly. You're in good company.

But now that you've taken all these notes, you are going to move up in difficulty when you're ready for the second game, right?

Hail everyone! If I somehow manage to upset the AI with a victory of some type I will move to the next level. If I am defeated, which I think is likely, I will try one more game at Chieftain. Initially, I thought to try for a victory in each category before moving to the next level. Any thoughts?

Hail everyone! Turns 91 thru 100 were a welcome improvement to my previous 20 turns. I settled the new land, have two Galleys working full time transporting units, while still improving the land and settling new towns on my island. My Income is 68g with Expenses of 68g (Science is 30g, Corruption is 38g); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 95g. I hope to find at least one civilization on this new land.

750BC. Turn 91. Literature in 2 turns. Washington produces a Galley. I loaded it with a Settler and Scout.
730BC. Turn 92. Literature in 1 turn. Boston produces a Horseman.
710BC. Turn 93. Literature is complete. Polytheism in 8 turns.
690BC. Turn 94. Polytheism in 7 turns. Delos produces a Horseman. My Galley is close enough to verify there is a landmass where I suspected to the northeast.
670BC. Turn 95. Polytheism in 6 turns. My Galley has unloaded a Settler and Scout on the new land. No sign of other civilizations or villages yet.
650BC. Turn 96. Polytheism in 5 turns. Paris produces a Settler. My Scout has discovered a village (they taught us Currency) and there is a nice area to settle a town (iron and horses).
630BC. Turn 97. Polytheism in 4 turns.
610BC. Turn 98. Polytheis, in 3 turns. Soled produces a Horseman. Town of Chicago settled on new land. Second Galley unloads a Settler and Horseman on the new land.
590BC. Turn 99. Polytheism in 2 turns. Philadelphia produces a Spearman. My Horseman and Scout continue exploring the new land. My first Galley has just picked up two more Horseman and is heading back to the new land.
570BC. Turn 100. Polytheism in 1 turn. Town of Seattle settled. My Scout can see a village in the distance (let’s hope for something good). Still no sign of the other civilizations.

No. I think you should get away from Chieftain as fast as possible. The AI is crippled at this level and you wind up playing a distorted version of the game. Kick it up at least to Warlord and I'd suggest you seriously consider Regent. Staying on Chieftain may teach you bad habits and you'll just have to to back and relearn when you get ready to move up.

Hail everyone! Turns 101 thru 110 were exciting and I think very eventful. I completed all my Ancient Times techs, started a new Government, The Republic, and discovered the other two remaining civilizations, The Romans and Indians. After trading maps I now have a much broader view of the world. My Income is 136g with Expenses of 136g (Science is 37g, Corruption is 70g, Unit Cost is 29g); breaking even each turn with a Treasury of 101g. My Science beaker is at 50%. On the downside, I’m not producing units quick enough to load on my Galleys to support my new land ventures. I want to establish a stronghold on the other civilizations landmass and keep them off of mine.

550BC. Turn 101. Polytheism complete. Construction in 12 turns. Delos produces a Settler. My Scout visits a village and they teach us Monarchy! A revolution begins and my civilization descends into Anarchy.
530BC. Turn 102. Anarchy continues. My Horseman discovers a village and they teach us The Republic!
510BC. Turn 103. Anarchy continues. My Galley unloads two Horsemen to the new land.
490BC. Turn 104. Anarchy has past and a new government emerges, The Republic! The cost of units has forced me to reduce my Science to 50% to stay near breaking even each turn. Construction in 10 turns.
470BC. Turn 105. Construction in 9 turns. Boston produces a Horseman. Atlanta produces a Spearman. Towns of San Francisco and Miami settled.
450BC. Turn 106. Construction in 7 turns. My Horseman comes across a village and they teach us Construction! We have learned all the techs of the Ancient Times! Feudalism in 15 turns.
430BC. Turn 107. Feudalism in 14 turns. The people offer to expand my Palace. New York produces a Horseman.
410BC. Turn 108. Feudalism in 12 turns. Delos produces a Horseman. Finally we come in contact with another civilization, The Romans. They are annoyed with us. I can see why. They are many techs behind us and have only four towns. They become cautious with us after trading World and Territory maps. I now see the other civilization, The Indians.
390BC. Turn 109. Feudalism in 11 turns. Soled produces a Settler.
370BC. Turn 110. Feudalism in 10 turns.

Hail everyone! That is correct. I was in Anarchy, on my way to becoming a Monarchy, when I was taught Republic. Once the Anarchy was completed I selected Republic instead of Monarchy.

I figured any government would be an improvement over Depotism so I was willing to take Monarchy. Either way, since it's my first game, it would be a nice learning experience. Being taught Republic was a very lucky break I think so I went for it.

Hail everyone! Turns 111 thru 120 saw the beginning of a war between my civilization and the Romans. I made a deal with the Indians and they joined in the fight. I plan on sitting back, destroying improvements made by the Romans with my Horsemen, while I let the Indians go head to head against the Roman soldiers. It may be a bit devious but my leaders aren’t known for their political correctness. My Income is 149g with Expenses of 145g (Science is 23g, Corruption is 86g, Unit Cost is 36g); net gain 4g each turn with a Treasury of 78g. My Science beaker is at 40%.

350BC. Turn 111. Feudalism in 9 turns. Chicago produces a Worker.
330BC. Turn 112. Feudalism in 9 turns. New York and Boston produces Settlers.
310BC. Turn 113. Feudalism in 8 turns. Delos produces a Settler. Seattle produces a Worker. My Horseman captures a Roman Worker as we declare WAR!
290BC. Turn 114. Feudalism in 6 turns. Town of Houston settled. Contacted the Indians and traded maps. Established an embassy with India, agreed to a Right of Passage, and set up military alliance against the Romans.
270BC. Turn 115. Feudalism in 5 turns. San Francisco and Miami produces workers. Town of Buffalo settled.
250BC. Turn 116. Feudalism in 4 turns. New York produces a Settler.
230BC. Turn 117. Feudalism in 5 turns. Soled produces a Settler. Town of St Louis settled.
210BC. Turn 118. Feudalism in 4 turns.
190BC. Turn 119. Feudalism in 3 turns. Roman town of Cumae destroyed.
170BC. Turn 120. Feudalism in 3 turns. Boston produces a Settler.
