It would still be smart to build up an army though, just in case the Romans do come north, or the Indians go after you. I wouldn't worry about rome so much though. Just be careful with India. If they take Rome out, then its just you and them.

Hail everyone! I continued my assault on the Romans. I’m not noticing much activity from the Indians. As long as they are after the Romans and not me, I’m satisfied. I took the capital city of Rome for myself. The poor Romans are down to one town. Despite my poor play during this game I am still way ahead of the Indians in technology and military units. My Income is 187g with Expenses of 184g (Science is 29g, Entertainment 9g, Corruption is 107g, Unit Cost is 39g); net gain 3g each turn with a Treasury of 136g. My Science beaker is at 40%.

150BC. Turn 121. Feudalism in 1 turn.

110BC. Turn 123. Monotheism in 23 turns. Seattle produces a Spearman. Roman town of Veii destroyed.
90BC. Turn 124. Monotheism in 22 turns. Atlanta produces a Settler.
70BC. Turn 125. Monotheism in 21 turns. San Francisco produces a Spearman. Towns of Detroit and New Orleans settled.

30BC. Turn 127. Monotheism in 18 turns. St Louis produces a Worker.

The world as I see it in 30AD. It seems most of the world has been mapped.

Be sure to "hook up" your resources, especially the luxury resources.

There are dyes (the pink round things) just southeast of your towns
on the new continent, and some ivory (the elephants in the shadows)
back on your home continent. These make people happy, and more productive.
Build roads thru the resources, and build a city nearby, so that those
tiles are contained within that city's radius.

Also, be sure to build at least one harbor on each continent,
so that the cities on both continents can enjoy the benefits
of the resources. The trade routes are not visible on the map;
the game searches through the road networks and sea routes
(and later, air routes) to make as many connections as it can, automatically.

You're very fortunate that there is "coast" / shallow water between
the continents; the trading can begin right away, without waiting
for the discovery of Astronomy or Navigation.

Hail everyone! I finished my assault on the Romans and utterly destroyed them. I’ve set my sights on the Indians. The War has begun and they have lost their first town, Calcutta. I can only hope my Horsemen will be enough to keep the Indians from advancing to my cities as they try to defend their own. My Income is 216g with Expenses of 218g (Science is 31g, Entertainment 14g, Corruption is 123g, Maintenance is 3g, Unit Cost is 47g); net loss 2g each turn with a Treasury of 136g. My Science beaker is at 40%.

Congratulations on destroying the Romans!

India: Try to stay on the offensive. How many horsemen do you have, and what will they be facing? Any idea?

Hail everyone! It is obvious the Chieftain level is very forgiving, even with my poor play. The war against the Indians is temporarily over as we’ve come to terms. The peace treaty will allow me to regroup. The plan is simple: mobilize my troops to a single location and attack in mass against the remaining towns. The completion of Chivalry will allow me to create Knights as a backup should my Horsemen fail to complete their task. My Income is 291g with Expenses of 289g (Science is 41g, Entertainment 17g, Corruption is 173g, Maintenance is 5g, Unit Cost is 53g); net gain 2g each turn with a Treasury of 168g. My Science beaker is at 40%.

250AD. Turn 141. Monotheism in 1 turn. Denver produces a Worker. No response noted from the Indians.
260AD. Turn 142. Monotheism complete. Chivalry in 16 turns. Town of Dallas settled. Indian town of Madras destroyed.
270AD. Turn 143. Chivalry in 15 turns. New York produces a Settler. Cincinnati produces a Worker.
280AD. Turn 144. Chivalry in 14 turns. Boston produces a Marketplace. I’m pulling my Horsemen back to a town to recover their hitpoints after fierce fighting. The only Indian military units spotted thus far have been Warriors, Spearmen, and Archers.
290AD. Turn 145. Chivalry in 12 turns.
300AD. Turn 146. Chivalry in 11 turns. Indian Warriors spotted leaving the capital of Delhi.
310AD. Turn 147. Chivalry in 10 turns. Rome produces a Spearman. St Louis produces a Pikeman.
320AD. Turn 148. Chivalry in 8 turns. Soled produces a Library.
330AD. Turn 149. Chivalry in 7 turns. Indian capital of Delhi has been captured!
340AD. Turn 150. Chivalry in 6 turns. Detroit produces a Spearman. Buffalo produces a Pikeman. India accepts a Peace Treaty which includes giving us one of their remaining towns.

Wow, it looks like you've got this game nearly won. I just started reading this; it’s a good thread, and well played out for you first game.

Hail everyone! Well I didn’t wait long as I decided to try for a victory with my remaining Horsemen. They were battle hardened with several reaching Veteran status. The three Indian towns fell easy prey to my attacking forces and victory was soon mine.

350AD. Turn 151. Chivalry in 5 turns. Soled produces a Settler. Denver produces a Spearman. Decided not to wait so I declared war on India again. Captured the town of Bombay.
360AD. Turn 152. Chivalry in 4 turns. Dallas produces a Worker.
370AD. Turn 153. Chivalry in 3 turns. New York and Boston produce Libraries. Antium produces a Spearman.
380AD. Turn 154. Chivalry in 2 turns. Indian towns of Bangalore and Lahore destroyed. The Indians have been utterly destroyed.
390AD. Turn 155. Chivalry in 1 turn. New Orleans produces a Pikeman. Baltimore produces a Spearman. I win! I have achieved a Conquest Victory!

Below are three images from my very first game:

Finally, The Hall of Fame. I hope to see many more victories of various types in the near future.

Chieftain was quite easy and thankfully so. I was able to make mistakes and learn from them without being humiliated or frustrated. I look forward to increasing the difficulty level and testing my skills in future games. Thank you all for your responses to questions, inputs to situations, links to additional information, and overall support during my first Civ3 Vanilla game!
