The Starting Position

Quite a nice starting position we have here. With 3 luxuries really close helps alot all within a 6 tile radius.

The iron is relatively close (11 tiles) is also nice. I came into contact with Persians early unfortunately I realised soon we had the Zulu's and Aztes on this map too.

Only pop rushed one settler to grab that iron before the persians
and ISC a little to get about 25 cities by 10Ad

The Persian War

Getting that iron quicken the war, as the immortal warfare just wasnt there and that was the only iron available. The Golden Age came in at the right time period and the Chinese army was too strong with a GA..

The Aztec War - The zulus were fighter with the Aztec in my game so once my riders reached the aztec which were losing badly to the zulus, there was little resistance as they couldnt fight on 2 fronts.

Nearing Domination now, I think only need a couple of cities to hit the domination limit :)

Post your game details

Something strange happens in this screenshot!

I was at war with the Zulus who had deceptivly sneak-attacked me (too bad for them ), with a GA going on and just having finished researching for my Riders, I invaded near Zimbabwe (which has the Pyramids). They have no iron and have never had any. And still there is a Pikeman standing in Zimbabve? Where the heck did it come from???

Any ideas?

Quick and very simple game for me... decided right at the start to go for a Spaceship victory, as domination/conquest are the easier and more usual victories for me. Won't post anything more yet, but I finished building the spaceship and launched it in 1565. I had over an age's lead on all of the AIs (in fact only the Aztecs were in the very early industrial age, Persia and the Zulus were still in medieval times, with the Zulus not even having physics yet!). Regent is a bit too easy for a long time deity player ;) Bring on the Super Deity game :)

Just finished my game, coincidently, also in 1565 AD, but through the domination method.

The Map
If it wasn't for the fact that we were told it was a random map, I'd suspect otherwise. Just that one little bridge between the two continents. And only one source of iron, coal and saltpeter on our side of it. Coupled with the fact that our closest neighbour (also competing for that iron) were the Persians. My sympathies for whoever slips up and lets the Persians get the iron first. I don't fancy the chances of having horsemen against immortals.

I was close to making this particular slip up, in that the last direction I explored was south, which in hindsight, giving the starting postion, made no sense. The Persian cities were just steadily climbing up to that iron and I had to quickly pelt a settler down there. But once the iron was mine it was (almost) plain sailing.

The Parsi Wars
Well I just got a load of swordsmen together and invaded, slowly assimilating their cities one by one. But, I wasn't building much settlers, and still had a lot of land around my half of the continent to settle. So the reward of a massive barbarian horde gave no pleasure. As I sent some swordsmen up to deal with this, some more barbarians came in from the south. And then another barb warrior (from a barb village, not a hoard) destroyed my link to the iron. Then the Persians retook Persepolis. This, understandably, didn't go down well. But it was just a minor setback, and within a few turns I had re-grouped and the war was able to continue, with no more hitches.

I left the Persians with one town. I kept the one that they had conveniently built on the land bridge. (Can't remember what it was called, but for arguments sake, I'll say it was Susa). And I built a new town a few spaces north of Persepolis in which I started the Forbidden Palace.

The Chinese Conquistadors
I garrisoned most of my army in Susa to keep an eye on the Aztecs. And not a few turns after the Persians had been spared mercy a group of Aztec jaguars, swordsmen and archers were seen coming my way. In a pre-emptive strike I killed off their attack. Now it's worth pointing out that the Aztecs culture was far in advance of mine, and that they (by the looks of it) had greater production power, as I still hadn't gotten round to filling up the rest of my land with cities.

Anyway with my swordsmen I managed to take their nearest (and most southern city), but due to their massive culture, they had it back in a few turns. A new strategy would be needed, but fortunatly I was a few turns away from getting Chivalry.

Just as I was about to get my first Rider kill, and a subsequent golden age, the Aztecs sued for peace. Normally I would scoff in the face of such cowardly deeds, but my production was still not good enough to overcome theirs. Also the Persians were beginning to build cities in some of my leftover land. So I killed off the Persians (getting my golden age at this point), and finished building my cities during a brief spell of peace.

By now my science rate was beginning to out-grow that of my enemies. I had a mighty army of Riders ready to put the Aztecs to the sword. The Aztecs declared war and the Never Ending War began (or NEW I, for short, which could also be related to the NEW world order. :mwaha: ), for not a few turns into the war the Zulus joined forces with the Aztecs - the eventual cause of their demise.

My riders swept into the barbarian continent, and put flame to the great Aztec cities, (There was no point in taking them over as culture flipping was too great a possibility), except the former capital, Tenochititlan, which was kept as an outpost, a resting point for tired and valient warriors.

In a turn of shockingly good fortune my first great leader emerged from the dust of battle. He was immediatly sent to complete the Forbidden Palace, which, even through a golden age, had failed to show ant signs of nearing completion. This new development catapulted my production into the stratosphere. Any doubts as to a Chinese victory were cast aside.

Then disaster. The Aztecs learned the secrets of gunpowder. However this calamity was short lived as my scientists/slaves discovered the secret of the military tradition. All riders were sent back to the nearest town to learn how to master the arts this new learning provided.

From here on is uneventful. All Aztec cities destroyed, and all Zulu cities, with the exception of one hole in the middle of nowhere, to lead as an example to what barbarian cultures produce.

All my cities then began to churn out settlers to fill the gap war had created, and to bring proper culture to the refugees who littered the land.

In a few turns domination was mine.

:king:

Also this was my first ever game as the Chinese. The Riders are amazing (though I still prefer Immortals).

I also got a total of 6 great leaders throughout, possibly my best so far.

Forgot to mention, I got about 2800 points.

Very good starting position with everything close by except Iron.

Very early (IMO) in 1175BC, 3 Jags away from their homeland were closing by.
Without hesitation I sent 3 Horsemen after them. Peace in 950BC for Aztec map.

A few turns later in 850BC, Aztec declared after my refusal to give Gold / Map.
I traded Currency for an Alliance with Zulu / Persia against Aztec.
Peace in 190BC and switch to Republic.

Aztec declared war in 10AD after my refusal to give Monotheism.
I traded Monotheism for Zulu's Feudalism and after Chivalry / Riders / GA all my Cities were building Veteran Riders. At that point, I knew I was going for Domination. Those Chinese Riders really run, I like them.

In 490AD, I declared war to Persia when they blocked the choke point.
Very short war. Persia was defeated in 510AD and the Aztec the following turn.

I declared war to Zulu in 530AD. First and only GL in 550AD for FP in Aztec Land.
Peace with Zulu in 650AD, I left them with one City in the Tundra.

Domination Victory in 790AD with 4832 points

nice fun game to start off with. I am basically a builder, but usually on harder skill levels, so i went for a domination victory. went straight for monarchy. I was planning on waiting for riders (I waited for the AI to research construction for me - wasted about 10 turns) before attacking persia, but once I had about 30-40 horsemen I just couldnt help my self. killed them quick, regrouped and waited for riders. Took out the Aztecs pretty fast. got a great leader in this war who I sent back to the persian lands for a F.P. Rushed temples in the aztecs cities, using mainly leftover riders and a little cash, and sent some settlers to claim the free lands. Got domination in about 610 AD with a score of about 5000. Still had about 15 settlers on my way to the front lines too :)

My game started off pretty good, with me getting access to the Iron before the Persians and a good number of luxuries. Soon enough, the Zulus attacked me for no reason. Since they had built the Pyramids, I decided to invade. I wiped them out and built the FP in a newfounded city near Zimbabwe.

I started settling south of the Zulu lands, and soon got attacked by the Atztecs. By this time I had Riders, and with Persia as an ally, destroying the Atztecs was easy. I built an army with my second leader, but it was destroyed before it could win a battle because the city I formed it in flipped the very next turn.

I switched to democracy and waited for Cavalry before going after the Persians. But before I was ready a Persian city flipped to me and this triggered the domination limit. The year was 1180 AD and I got 4292 points.

Wow, did anyone other than me go for a spaceship victory?

I did...because domination was just too easy in this one. Tried to beat your date for kicks, but failed miserably...think I ended up in the late 1600's :crazyeye:

Wiped out everyone swiftly with swordsmen before Feudalism...first Persia, then Aztec, then Zimbabwe. Had a road stretching counter-clockwise from the starting position all the way to the east side of Aztec land. 20-30 swordsmen in a Blitzkrieg. Gifted the Zulus a desert city to keep from triggering conquest victory.

Game became a tedious milking and no fun after the 600AD mark.

Just to let everyone know Im going on 2 week annual holiday.

It was a nice easy map to start with, and domination was the easiest way to go for me also.

Ive been receiving games, but for those who dont know, check out the HOF Page for the email address.

I think its hof@civfanatics.net

Cheers

Yes, it was me for no good reason (if you're starting in the north - GO SOUTH.)

Razed the persian city, settled my own on the hills just north of the coal and used my first GL to build a Forbidden Palace. Proceeded then to destroy the rest of Persia, after upgrading horsemen.

Tried to stay peaceful throughout the rest of the game to no avail. At one point towards the end, the zulus wanted to fight my modern armour armies with a band of a dozen archers. I got a great leader from the first engagement which I wanted to save to build the next wonder, so I just let their archers chase around a worker or two for about 10 turns, as my armies looked on from the mountains. Before I could build my wonder, however, the zulu's sued for peace, and I relented.

I ended my game with my empire and massive armies four squares west of tenoctilan, the aztec capital. Their empire matched my own in size, and I wouldn't have them beat me to space. I never declared war, however, as they never built their first part.

The harder games will undoubtably be more work and less 'play'.

JuicyCivNewbie, my spacechip launched in 1846, after I had been researching techs @ 4 turns each since my Great Library gave out. I find your (and others') early launch impressive. Did you build the Great Library, or simply research thru it?

the only mistake I made in this game was not taking out the Persians early in the game. I decided to play the peaceful route and go for the spaceship launch. I did manage to get a city built by the iron. Every time I researched to uncover a resource, I would be disappointed to see that they were not available in my territory. No saltpeter, no rubber. the Aztecs did me a favour by sneak attacking me when we had an ROP and MPP. The Zulus joined in on the action soon after.

So now I have taken all of the former Zulu lands, and just managed to capture a rubber resource 2 turns before I researched motorized transport. Game is now in the bag, and I will settle down to build the spaceship. I predict launch in the early 1700's.

Nearly slipped up in this game. Started it on 10 September. Really thought the victory conditions were culture and conquest. I was going for conquest of course. Fortunately I was saved by time. Have killed the Persians early with horsemen and then the Aztechs with Riders. Gota love them. Was about to launch on the Zulu when it was bedtime.:)

Was controlling my domination limit right through the game with mapstat. Damn:( . Could have won long time ago if I built some temples and cities...

Still so far really an easy game!

Easy game. Dom in 1160ad. I dont think I played it especially well. I was waiting ages for settlers to fill in the holes and trigger dom.

On to game 2!

I finally started this game about a week ago. I've had quite a bit of travel at work, and I wanted to finish the GOTM first, due to its submit-by date.

My first warrior encountered the Persians, and an unguarded Pasargadae :D . I couldn't resist - so much for the Persians. It took longer of course, but losing that 2nd city like that is nearly impossible to overcome.

I'm going for domination all the way (Fastest Victory is important due to my schedule). I've nearly fully civilized my continent. The Aztecs have declared war, and we've been going at it for a couple of centuries. It's late 400's AD, and I've just gotten Chivalry, with about 30 horsemen and a large treasury. I predict that the tempo is about to increase.

Zulu's have just declared war. We'll see what they can bring. Zulus aren't out of the Ancient Era yet. The Aztecs have Feudalism only, but I'll be sure to isolate them from their Iron soon. Shouldn't last too much longer.
